If you're on the job hunt, where are you getting stuck? Can't find jobs to apply for? Can't get an interview? Getting an interview but not getting offers?
Hello @EllelleActuary, thank you for posting this video. I am a career changer looking for my first actuarial job. I'm not quite sure where to find jobs to apply for at the entry-level (in Toronto). I feel that I missed a few hiring events/internship opportunities since I am no longer a student. I have passed 2 exams and the VEEs. Where do I start?
Yes, an actuarial recruiter has agreed to help but I don't think there are as many opportunities in Canada compared to US - I was told that actuarial hiring companies in Canada generally do their own recruiting for EL. The qualifications for job postings online are targeting candidates close to ASA, so I am not sure how to break into the market.
Current;y have passed the first two SOA exams (P and FM), awaiting the results from MFE. I'm a career changer from accounting. What I'm having difficulties in finding are more entry-level jobs to apply too. Part of me feels I'd need to go back to school to get an actuarial degree
My sister cleared 4 core ct papers but she is not able to find a job opportunity for herself bcz in india there are less job for actuaries so for internships and all u need source in an actuarial firm.
Thank you for your serious question. To this I would say, start by taking it up as a hobby. To monetize this, the lottery is always a viable source of income
Haha that's gold Michelle. I like how you are role playing with yourself with your other account I got confused. On a serious note, I didn't realise you went through so much to get that first internship. It's nice to know that someone else also had the same thoughts as I going to those cocktails and with writing emails. Did you do your interview in french? If you did, I applaud you because that's an additional challenge given that you are more comfortable with English. Also, it was cool meeting you in person two weeks ago in one of those "5a7"
Yes I did interview in French. I think that the interviewers were sympathetic, given that French is obviously not my first language, but I was clearly making an effort :)
I studied Mathematics and Statistics. For me it involved getting rejected throughout my whole time in university for actuarial internships, not even a reply. I managed get an internship involving programming not actuarial though. After university I got rejected for around one hundred plus jobs. So I got a job that used some form of actuarial calculations although it was more admin and paid terrible. Got an interview eventually then got through to the final stage, totally messed up the interview with stress much worse than what you described. After 200 or so applications over one year after graduation I managed to get an actuarial analyst job. It was really tough getting rejected all the time. What helped me was my work experience I developed a good understanding of what actuaries do in much more detail. It really helped with my last interview and helped me stand out from other candidates.
Thank you :) I take it you work in Canada? Do you know if many companies in Canada employ UK qualified actuaries? In the future I might consider moving there, I really like Canada.
Uranus yes I am male. It could have been a factor. I have talked to some employers and they have said they do “positively discriminate”. I’m all for equal opportunity, but not equality of outcome. One big factor is just the sheer amount of people with decent degrees applying for these jobs. If you keep applying and keep gaining more skills you should get employed even if there’s some discrimination against you. It’s not ideal but there’s nothing I could have done about it.
Even as a non-actuary this was great to watch. Honestly heading into the job market soon and it's scary as hell, it's nice to have tips on how to make yourself stand out as a candidate!!
I just went through your video, and saw your questions in the comment sections. You've just hit the right questions! I'm actually not getting interviews, and when I got a call for an interview I didn't get the job. Any leads on this, or any help from your end will be a blessing to me! Many thanks in advance.
@@Actuaryelle Yes, but none mentioned any major areas where changes would lead me to interview desks! Everyone just mentioned about changes in my personal details and linguistic abilities. Nothing was I told about my education and profession's details. Also if you could help me with it? Please! It would of really a great help! Please ma'am!
Hey there! Live your chanel :) May I know if you went to McGill or Concordia? I am applying to Actuarial science for fall and wondering wich unis to apply to! Thanks!
I graduated college last may with a math major and a business minor. My school didn't have an actuarial program so I was on my own as far as studying for the exams and finding internships. I wasn't able to find any internships so it's been tough trying to find a job with no experience. I'm still unemployed and I now have three exams (I just found out yesterday that I passed MFE!). I've had a handful of phone interviews but I haven't really had any in person interviews. I'm starting to look for financial analyst jobs just to get my foot in the door because I'm having no luck with actuarial jobs. Sorry for the lengthy comment but if you have any advice I would really appreciate it, thanks!!
Congratulations on MFE! It sounds like you're doing the right thing, trying to find a similar job to get your foot in the door. Have you done practice interviews with friends? Maybe they could give you some feedback and help you with your interview skills. I know I had like.. half a dozen people review my resume every time I updated it, and I did a few practice interviews so people could point out where I was weaker. Good luck!
Personally I use SAS. There are actuarial teams working in R. Over the course of the year, I will likely be trained in R and start doing some of my projects there
Hii! Can I ask for your suggestion? I'm graduating soon and never had professional experience. I have around 3.5 GPA and 3 Exams done. I'm concerned that entry level position is hard to get in Canada, especially around GTA. Would you please help??
Hey Elle👋🏽 I have a really good but weird question... ok, so, if I pursue a career in actuarial sciences, pass the exams, and become an actuary, I would need to move to a big city with actuary job openings(obviously), but I currently live in a small city with no actuaries residing nor living here. Whatever, the question’s if I become an actuary but then want to come back to a small city(no actuary jobs) can I work as something else but an actuary (engineer, manager, etc etc.) having the actuarial sciences degree and actuary title?
+Ana Flores I'd be surprised if engineers were ok with having non-engineers do their work. If you intend to be a manager, you can definitely develop that skillset as an actuary.
Nice video! One question: Are there actuary job demands in Vancouver as much as Toronto and Quebec? Seems like the job recruiting websites for Vancouver are only hiring 26 spots (JobIndeed)
I'm planning to be an actuary and I think I want to work in Montreal. I also want to go to an english cegep and english university. Will it be hard to explain things in french if I studied in an english cegep and university?
I am wondering what the average r score is to get into actuarial science in a university in Quebec? Also, do you believe Concordia University has a good actuary program?
hello mam, firstly congrats for being an actuary i wanna know that have you see any indian actuary working in your company or any company which you know about. sorry for inaccurate english😅
Hi! I'm studying actuarial science at the University of Montreal ( 2nd year in January) i really want some informations can we talk in private ? questions like what software should I master, languages, exams ICA SOA CAS ...networking events internships etc.. Plz :)
Thank you for putting this up. I have a Son who committed the sin of not doing an internship. He had good grades and has passed the first three tests but cannot seem to get an actuarial job. If you have any advice that would be great. He is a wonderful person and a great guy.

Hi, this video was very helpful. Hearing your experience makes it a little less scary to get out there, thank you
You get more views than SOA. That's kinda cool.
hehehe
How do I make professional-couch-potato into my job? Serious question. Please answer.
Thank you for your serious question. To this I would say, start by taking it up as a hobby. To monetize this, the lottery is always a viable source of income
I will take this under advisement. Thank you for being so prompt with your response.
Pleasure

The fact that you didn't give up and kept applying shows real determination and dedication to becoming an actuary. I hope you love it 😀

I will assume you’re male given that you were rejected so much. Women have it easier nowerdays in terms of the job market.

+Tamara Erin ugh I know. Job hunting is so terrifying! But ultimately, it's a question of when you get a job, not if you'll get a job 👍

Do you only use SAS in your job? Is there any movement towards R or other statistical programming languages?
Personally I use SAS. There are actuarial teams working in R. Over the course of the year, I will likely be trained in R and start doing some of my projects there
Great question!
What is your area? I mean pricing,analytics,product,capital,reserving...?

Nah you should be fine
Did you went to a french university or an english one?
I am wondering what the average r score is to get into actuarial science in a university in Quebec? Also, do you believe Concordia University has a good actuary program?
You would have to look at the university websites to know their acceptance requirements
Jeezz, I got 4 exams and still no job... I am depressed, can you believeeee?
Wow that sounds terrible. How long have you been looking for a job?
Omg! At my interview today, I was asked “How would you explain the normal distribution to a child?”!!!
Sounds like a typical interview question to me! How did the interview go? :)
Not bad but not great either! I was super nervous. Though I did have two more interviews today and they just went way better.
Update: I got an offer!!! For the fall!!!
Yay! Congratulations 😀😀😀

Hi! I'm studying actuarial science at the University of Montreal ( 2nd year in January) i really want some informations can we talk in private ? questions like what software should I master, languages, exams ICA SOA CAS ...networking events internships etc.. Plz :)
Hi! I'd recommend you talk to an academic advisor or a 3rd year student. They'll probably have better answers than I do
Do actuaries need to be good in probability
You should understand how probabilities work, yes
Thank you for putting this up. I have a Son who committed the sin of not doing an internship. He had good grades and has passed the first three tests but cannot seem to get an actuarial job. If you have any advice that would be great. He is a wonderful person and a great guy.
