    Also that throwback footage of your turts as babies was soooo cute. We need more of that!

      Thank you thank you!!!! It's such a hard topic I refilmed it like 4 times 😂 I'll make a video of all the throwbacks of the little ones (although if all goes well, I'm going to be setting up a hatchling enclosure next week!!!) As for TSA work, I have another video to edit tonight for them, and I'm interning with them in the summer! WOO! Good to talk with you again 😊😊

      @@DanTheTurtleMan_ hey buddy let me help you out here as a long time fish and reptile keeper and breeder heres a help fact ,, the measurement we use in brackish and salt are grams per liter ,,, so when your say ,5 to 1 thats five grams per liter of water ,, as in a salt tank we will say 10:20 that is 20 grams of salt per liter of water ,,, another way we keep salt levels is about a table spoon per gallon ,, now when you measure this out and look at it it seems like a lot of salt ,,, dont worry its not ,, and its much much better that what your way using is a hydrometer ,is best ,,, it measure just like i stated , it measures grams per liter ,,, an average marine tank is 10:20 ,,, to 10 :22 ,,, this varies for different areas and different creatures of course ,, ,,, or consider a brackish tank is half a salt tank ,,, and many many fish can bounce back and forth ,,, like scats ,, archers ,, mollys ,, tiger fish ,, toad fish ,, and many many more ,, hope this helps in some way , have a great day

    I volunteer at the Virginia Aquarium each week and have the privilege of working with the Diamond Backs they display. They rotate their adult terrapins between a freshwater (slight amount of salt added, I wouldn't consider it brackish) exhibit full of "coastal river" native fish and sliders, and a full-strength saltwater holding aquarium behind the scenes. Those that need special care for whatever reason are housed in freshwater. They are versatile of course as a coastal species and I agree with you careful acclimation is the key. Great video.

    I have a group of hatch-ling River Cooters in a 70 gallon tub as yours. they are obviously in fresh water and out side during the warmer months . I have water hyacinths in the tub with them and it proves them with food in the form of plant matter, basking surfaces, and they also work excellent for keeping the water clean by using the nutrients in the water. i don't use any filtration at all. I was wondering if you would try and placing a water hyacinth in your brackish water and see if it thrives. I have read that they are tolerant of low levels of salt. great video !

  • @frandukie

    Just a short question, why do you use water softener salt and not marine salt? Wouldn't marine salt make more sense as it's not just sodium chloride that they need but also all the other minerals in marine salt?

    • @DanTheTurtleMan_
      @DanTheTurtleMan_  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! Simple answer, because it's cheap. Like dirt cheap. Also Terrapins don't need everything in marine salt, they just need the good ol NaCl and nothing else! The other minerals aren't necessary for them.

    Hey Dan! Just found you! Do you have Northern Diamondbacks? Or are they blue concentric? Thanks!

    • @DanTheTurtleMan_
      @DanTheTurtleMan_  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Amanda! Concentric refers to skin with "squiggle line" patterns or basically anything but tight packed dots, and blue is a skin tone that stays blue. Therefore neither are subspecies, but rather labels given to different "types" in the pet trade. A northern can be regular toned, can be concentric, or blue concentric. Then again, a centrata can also be concentric or blue concentric. It's confusing I know 😭

    First I'm not here to undermine Dan - we have discussed BRACKISH at length in the past !
    I have kept and bred BRACKISH water Terrapins since 2008.. converted to BRACKISH in 2013 and transition ALL hatchlings to BRACKISH at about 6 months of age. My East Coast YEARLINGS and older are kept in 1.012 - 1.015 with access to fresh [ at will ] to drink and eat in. [ it's in the set-up ] Ask Dan how to get in touch with me if you like - as you may guess I'm a BRACKISH water advocate. This statement is ONLY explaining credentials and experience. Thank you -- Terry aka turtletary since 2004.
    BTW Gulf Coast Terrapins are caught by "Shrimpers" in their nets -- while the Terrapins are grazing on shrimp [ in SALT WATER !!! ]
    I didn't teach Dan [ most of ] this - It should be titled ONLY BRACKISH Water for DIAMONDBACK TERRAPINS!
    Dan got it right when he said they live in BRACKISH in the wild. [ the lie about hatchlings and fresh water is exactly that - they start out BRACKISH in the wild ] - so why not keep them in BRACKISH water ? It's easier to maintain =
    fewer water changes needed.. BRACKISH water will not hurt your filter.. cost to filter [ size of filter ] vs fresh water is about 1/4 of cost to filter BRACKISH vs fresh because the salt kills the stuff that harms the BRACKISH water Terrapins. WELL EXPLAINED Dan!
    So take the PROS and go with them... and don't listen to the CONS that say it's too hard to go BRACKISH . It costs less $$$ and TIME to maintain your BRACKISH water Terrapins in BRACKISH water --- NOT TO MENTION IT"S NATURAL !!!
    [ wish Dan hadn't said that Brackish water Terrapins don't have to live in BRACKISH water at the end ]
    How long has this fresh water myth been going on is what I really want to know -- it's amazing what they say and do to justify keeping BRACKISH water Terrapins in fresh water !?!?
