    Thanks for watching Superworms & Mealworms in our Feeder Insect Series and be sure to check out the Feeder Insect Playlist to see other great projects. I keep and breed my own Super and Mealworms. This is a small basic set up to meet the needs of my reptiles and luckily my success has been so great that I'm overrun with worms so I purposely limit the number of beetles I keep.
    It's best using larger drawers if possible especially with Superworms due to their cannibalistic nature, but if properly fed and the pen is kept clean you'll be okay. There are many substrate options but I use oats, some say to microwave it if you see mites etc but I have not had that problem and I believe it's possible when putting foods directly onto the substrate and not the eggs crates, humidity related or just bad oats🤷🏽‍♂️ but it's an option to consider.

    WOW. Amazing video. This has been the BEST super/meal worm breeding video I've found. Well articulated, to-the-point, and you got everything covered in there PLUS more. The mesh screen bin is absolute genius, and now I feel I must do this for my new set-up. The transfer of eggs was the last thing I was looking forward to.

      @@nae8052 Sorry I'm now seeing this, I never got an alert. In my opinion they are similar but mealworms are smaller and have a tougher exoskeleton shell that's a digestive issue for reptiles like Chameleons . Meal worms can also be refrigerated to extend longevity. Superworms are the better healthier choice but are bigger and will put up a fight.

    Im my experience, the mesh on the beetle bin is more trouble than it's worth. There is always a mess everywhere. You can't pull the beetle drawer without pulling another below or bran and eggs fall everywhere. You are going to be sifting your larvae, which means you will have a sifter. So why not just sift the beetle bin every couple weeks or a month when you want to make a nursery bin? If the beetles are given moisture regularly, the eggs will be safe from them. It's a much simpler setup, much cleaner, and doesn't require destroying one of the bins. I've done it both ways and the choice is easy.

    I did something a lot like this, and at first it was a huge success. It produced mealworms alright, and it saved me many trips to the pet store. Unfortunately it was also extremely easy for grain moths to infiltrate and lay their eggs. It took me a long time to figure out why this was happening, it was so bad I kept finding their little larvae crawling across my ceiling and dropping down. I keep them in a tupperware bin with wire mesh on the top, but even that doesn't seem to be enough to keep them out sometimes. I don't think the one I bought is as airtight as I thought it was. That or I need to get Amour fine-mesh.

    • @StephRae
      @StephRae ปีที่แล้ว

      Superworms are a very different species. They require different breeding processes. He does cover this but he covers both so I can see why you are a bit confused. When you re-watch, be sure to pay attention to the fact that superworms need to be isolated, cannot be refrigerated and have a much longer cycle to mature. It is a very good video but he does cover them together and I can see why you got them a bit confused. I prefer superworms because they offer more control - take longer and they won't really pupate until I am ready to have them do so.

    • @kripkethechameleonfriends4505
      @kripkethechameleonfriends4505  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry to hear that, it sounds like some sort of moisture issue. If so maybe reduce the amounts of food and change the bedding more often. Be sure to keep foods fresh and no spoilage in the bin and also maybe hang a fly sticky near by until you get control of the situation. I've heard some people complain of mites and lightly microwaving the bedding helped. I hope it works out for you.

      Random veggies in general. You can feed a lot but just be sure to be on top of removing spoiled foods and do frequent bedding changes 😊

    • @wigglywhiskers4004
      @wigglywhiskers4004 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might be that it is too cold/hot for them to pupate, so they die from age and it looks like they dry up. Check your temperature. Another thing that might help- try shredding your carrot/potato and spreading it around the cage, so they don't have to search for moisture. That has helped for me, and hope it helps you!

    • @kripkethechameleonfriends4505
      @kripkethechameleonfriends4505  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As worms or beetles, I would keep them in something much bigger long term with fresh bedding. As pupae, those small containers should be fine then move out as beetles.

  • @desireeisaryk9181

    Hey I got a couple questions if u don't mind. I kinda have the same set up as you but smaller drawers. First ? Is how are you keeping them heated and all? I had mine in the drawer with ceramic heat for warmth and it wasn't holding the heat, so then the drawers I have the mealworms in I took them Out the shelf and have them side by side. I'm producing LOTS of pupae and in turn lots of beetles. The thing is I'm not "seeing" any eggs and not getting mealworms from the eggs. I went as far as buying a mini microscope to see if I can see any eggs but to me i don't. Ive waited the 2 weeks for them to mate and all the above. I'm having lots of beetles but no eggs. I have 70% humidity and there kept at almost 80°. I just cant get eggs. HELP ME PLEASE. Thank you I can send u pictures of my set up if need be.

      @kripkethechameleonfriends4505  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My home central air conditioning averages around 78 degrees year long so I never had to use a heat source. The eggs are really hard to see and even when hatched you won't notice the babies for sometime. I began with 300 mealworms and ended up with a lot over time, then I began to refrigerate most to slow down the cycle while the remaining continued the process. Mealworms are simple unlike Superworms, so my only suggestion is start off with many, feed well, keep the bedding clean and it will flourish in time.

    • @kripkethechameleonfriends4505
      @kripkethechameleonfriends4505  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry now seeing this. Assuming your speaking of mealworms, start off with a lot so you can have a consistent flow. 1K worms, pupae and beetles each, feed often, remove uneaten food just before it spoils and swap out bedding every few weeks. Keep the temps around 80°
      That's what I did then had to slow down because I was producing and converting too many.
      Superworms are slower converting the worms to beetles as seen in the video
