    Great video! I love your system, and will be starting my own experiment for breeding treats for my chickens, guinea fowl, and Muscovy ducks. Yours is the most logical method I have seen, and your thorough coverage has given me confidence to finally try. I have a 6 year-old grandson living with me that will surely be enthralled! Thanks so much!

    I have been checking many videos about meal worms and super worms, of system design, your tiered stack is the easiest for kids to start and maintain. I may go a step further and add two slotted sifting trays to separate meal worm sizes so that I can feed out very small worms to some more unusual pets.
    You have done a great job on the video, and give my warm regards to your supportive husband.

    1) How long till the worms become beetles?
    2) Can they climb out of the plastic containers?
    3) Do the adults eat the baby worms, larger worms or the eggs?
    4) what kind of oats do they eat, rolled, instant or old fashioned oats that take a little while to cook?
    Thank you

    I watched another video before this, that talked about using frass as fertilizer.
    I'm not comfortable using the "frass" as fertilizer, because it will also be mixed with bits of food.
    Food that could attract ants/gnats to your plants.
    However, I've heard you can feed the frass to other things, maybe black soldier fly larvae followed by red worms, which might eat most of the remaining food, making it safe to use as a fertilizer.

    I started 8 months ago with 150+ beetles and have mealworms growing at great speed with several different rates of growth keeping them in a warm area. I now have 75 remaining active beetles but by now expected them to have died off. I am anxious to start the next generation. Should I leave these remaining geriatric beetles or destroy them to start over. Are they just active and still laying eggs or just eating and having fun?

    I want to start up my farm for my chickens, but I need to calculate if it's not a waste of time or money for me. So, maybe someone can help me?
    What's the mealworm/food ratio/fcr? How many mealworms can I get from 1kg of oats or how many oats does one need for a kg of mealworms? It doesn't need to be exactly , just roughly helps a lot.
    Does it need to be oats? Can I maybe also use old bread if I grind it up?

    • @ValerieRaya
      @ValerieRaya 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have done a bit more research and find different FCR ratios... this is very confusing to me, as they vary between 1,5 and over 6. I know it depends on what food is fed, but still... very few sources I have found even say what was fed

  • @LoveMyQHorse

    Just getting ready to buy bins and this is the most straightforward/efficient video I've seen - thank you. For the 6 qt tubs, what would be the max number of beetles and max number of worms in grow out tub, roughly?

    • @BBsBeasties
      @BBsBeasties  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well I don’t have an exact max number lol it just depends on if they’re overcrowding or not, and how many feeders you go through. I wouldn’t breed too many if they’re not going to be eaten. I do probably 15-20 beetles at a time, replacing and removing as needed. And I never count the worms 😂

    • @BBsBeasties
      @BBsBeasties  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      mm mm thanks! The beetles don’t die as easily if they’re being fed regularly. But I continue to pupate some adult worms to replenish the beetle numbers :)

    • @PatrickSteil
      @PatrickSteil 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fantastic video. I watched a bunch in this topic this morning and yours is the best and easiest to follow!!!!
      Question: what percentage of your worms do you allow to go to pupae and thus turn into beetles?

    • @BBsBeasties
      @BBsBeasties  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick Steil I don’t really keep a specific number, I just watch the progress of the breeding and if I’d like more worms, I’ll make more beetles! If I want less worms, I’ll take out some beetles! You just need to go about it in whatever way works best for you :)

    I had a bunch of meal worms turn into beetles in my turtle enclosure and the Beatles got out and they were all over my house until they finally died of starvation now my turtles are hibernating and so I don’t have any use for worms or beetles and the super worms beetles turn into stink bugs

  • @marcelles1679

    Great video and system. In your opinion, why do you think the self sorting system didn't work out well with the superworms? I'm trying to start a superworm colony and have thought about trying a self sorting system.

    • @BBsBeasties
      @BBsBeasties  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It didn’t work for me because I didn’t have big enough mesh and didn’t want to buy anymore lol the superworm babies are much larger than mealworm babies, so with larger holes it would work great!

  • @whiskeyneat97
