When Calamari cameras met 16-year old Kevin he had been locked up in a juvenile detention facility for over 3 months. He hadn't had a visit from his mom and the stress of being behind bars was getting to him. In this extensive interview, Kevin talked about his family turmoil, his dad being in prison and what he hoped for his future if the judge released him from detention. He stated that young kids like him could turn their lives around and "be somebody" if adults would understand the issues they deal with on a daily basis. Acting out, he said, was ultimately a cry for help.
Note: After being released from juvenile detention, Kevin was later arrested in 2016 for carrying a handgun with no license. He received a two year prison sentence and was released in 2018. There is no record of him returning to the system since.

In my case at 15 I ran from a maximum security youth home .by 16 for only the crime of runaway they put me in the juvenile state prison in macon ga.just for runaway .reason being running from a maximum security youth home from Ga.sent to Flower mound texas Paul Anderson's girls group home.No one would foster me etc.I did my time in a state prison and got out they sent me back home.My step father was being so verbally abuse to my mother I ran again.Gone for 6 months the detectives who had been on the case all those years told my grandmother if she could tell me they would tell the judge to emancipate me.Of course my grandmother told me.I had become a ward of the state.still so scared of my step father I never told the abuse or threats. HE was very financially well off .They ended up emanicipating me.Then ofcourse raising myself I never picked healthy men.Ended up in an abusive marriage.Very long story. After that I took volunteer classes in Atlanta at The Women's Resource Center.Used my life story to testify in legislative hearings and Successfully Passed a Bill with a former governor of ga.it was yrs ago.i related to him because I felt he wasnt telling the whole story. He was loving and protective to his mother as I was.Ive had many accomplishments and hope he sees this as well to know He can overcome.its hard I'm 51 I'm not perfect.my mother has passed.but in 2019 she finally admitted he was abusive to her and she was very sorry.I want him to know the best people ever the leaders we all have a story.its why we do what we do!

Christel: I was a juvenile officer in Missouri for many years. You are right. If an adult approaches them correctly and wins their trust, he or she quickly learns that these kids are not intrinsically bad. You see them as the young people that they really are. They present an entirely different side of their personality. They have been let down - repeatedly - by people charged with caring for them. Listen to this boy's narrative. This is invariably their parents. Unfortunately, mentors - good, caring, unselfish mentors for these youngsters - are few and far between. Caring for these youngsters, winning their trust and confidence, and working through the legal system on their behalf was one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional career. I made lots of wonderful young friends. In some cases, their friendship has endured through the years. It means more than words can express.

Many thanks @Bob Daniel. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. We are trying to come up with a way for people to help where and when they want to. We'll also say this: simple things like the number of views and comments on a video help lawmakers and those in decision-making seats recognize the power of these stories. You'd be surprised how many times a video or TV show has helped guide policy decisions. It's why our work is often used in education and training environments, too. Thank you for your question. He wants to believe his mom is a good person because admitting that she's just like his dad then that means both people that should of been there for him let him down and he will start to think he has no one. If she was actually a mom to him and did her job as a parent he wouldn't of been in and out of jail since 12 years old. Her and his father. Smh. He never even had a chance. People should feel the way they do for him for all other kids regardless of race. I love all of comments on this being empathetic, but this isn't the same on posts with black and Latino kids. So many trials and the comments are "who cares about his upbringing lock him up." This guy don't have his dad but when it's in minority communities there are more deadbeat dad comments. He's was in a gang too and no one is calling him a thug. I pray the world will one day treat people the same.

Have you thought about incorporating videos of juvenile facilities from more progressive jurisdictions that are much less prison-like? It might provide an interesting contrast between cultures.

This is beyond sad. Both his parents failed him. It’s so heartbreaking to see such a young child having to fend for himself in this cold world. He’s beyond lost trying to navigate in an adult world where he should be protected by his useless parents. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢🤬🤬🤬

This kid is too smart. Way too fuckin smart to be in there. I live in Indiana. Wish I knew who this kid was, I’d help the lil man out. He’s way too bright to be going down a dark path. My whole childhood was fucked, I feel this kids pain personally. I’ve done shit that keeps me up at night 15 years later. Man. Anyone know this kids name? Im only a few mins in so if they say it, I haven’t heard it yet.

Does these fu**in parents know what they are doing to these kids? They look up to u to help them get thru this. U don't let ur kid take the child take on what u just did. They need u to keep goin and bring them 💘 happiness beautiful fun ❤ home. You parents wake up and work with ur kids not against them!!!!

He can't even properly express himself. And he is delusional if he thinks his father is going to suddenly become a father. He needs to concentrate on learning how to support himself.

You know, I feel bad. But a ged really isn’t a bad thing. People just have made it seem like it is. You can still be super successful with it. I mean if you really wanted to, you could get into like Harvard or something. A ged is just as good as a hs diploma, and for some people it shows that they are smart and don’t need to suffer through all 4 years. I mean I got my ged in a week. I studied a little bit but I’m smart enough. Now it’s time for college at 16 y/o.

in the Netherlands these kinds of children are helped. i pray in jesus name that this boy his sisters and brothers get the right love and help . I also had a terrible childhood. always violence and growing up in fear . lochiesh that these kinds of children also get into crime or addiction. they are entitled to love, understanding, structure and guidance to get the most out of it, which makes them feel happy. it was hard enough growing up in a difficult home situation. i pray that he will read the bible and come to faith .that he will find peace in his heart and that he will know his worth . he is a pearl in god s hands. god you know this boy by name help this boy with your loyalty and love .give people who work from the heart
