    3 weeks after picking up my first board I was riding with a friend near the beach and suddenly there was this really big, really long downhill... I just didn't think it twice and went for it. I was lucky to have had my trucks tight, because if I hadn't had, I would had fallen at like 50km/h. Just committed all the way through, and I was just so impressed by it that I did it two more times. The old man at at the end of the hill told me some guy had done the same but fell really hard and he took him to the hospital with several broken bones.

    There's no other feeling quite like bombing a hill. The wind in your face the feeling of the board under your feet and the sound of the wheels spinning faster and faster. That OH SHIT feeling you get when you start getting the wobbles. Knowing the risk factors and then the ultimate feeling when you survive and ride it out. This is what SKATE OR DIE means lol

    Here’s my recent sketchy hill bombing story:
    I’m out of practice but back into skating a few weeks now used to long board for years in nyc able to front slide and back slide too.. was going down the williamsburg bridge and i have large but soft wheels on a short board for cruising- the soft wheels make it impossible to power slide - i thought it was because im out of practice but this video confirms it’s impossible to slide / speed check soft wheels. So i usually foot drag to keep the speed manageable and towards the end of the hill i let it rip… i’ve made it a few times with no issue but definitely close to max speed that’s possible… at the end of the hill there’s a pretty sharp 90 degree turn off otherwise you keep going straight into a concrete wall or slightly right into a highway-- anyway… last time i bombed it i was tired and not feeling it but did it anyway… i think i mis judged how much speed i would get because i committed to the letting it rip part maybe too early and got wayyyy more speed then was acceptable i knew i was gonna likely eat shit… no pads no shirt and loose shorts -- okay as i hit max speed -- i feel wobbles so i know how to handle that .. lock knees together head forward pressure on the front foot and get as low as possible liek a knock knee bow down ass up … okay im approaching the bottom - i’m totally committed as i’m too fast to attempt a foot drag and can’t attempt it now since i need control to get through the posts at the end of the bridge - now you got these 1 foot wide steel cyclinrical posts about 3.5 feet apart that block cars i assume you gotta field goal that so it’s critical you DO NOT LOSE CONTROL before shooting through these posts… i know i’m going too fast approaching the posts so im dead focused on making the posts -- blast through those then immediately have to reassess the 90 degree turn… no way i’m making it… i decided to bail
    and attempt a run out.. shorts are very loose … i run out… going insane -- brace for nasty fall -- shorts falll to my knees from the weight of my phone … fuuuuck running out somehow my feet keep moving and i don’t trip and eat it… i finish the run out -- pull up my shorts -- grab my board and look around at the people looking at me like WTF JUST HAPPENED and I retrieve my board and happily skate away - feeling very luck i wasn’t at least bleeding a lot. 💀😅

      Soft wheels slide, even on a short wheelbase board. I slide 78A's on a street deck. They grip more so you just need to power through the breakout.

  • @MaxMercZ

    Soft wheels don't only grip but absorb more on the street like small pebbles and cracks n bumps also their less noisy the hard wheels especially when bombing

    • @blankbrian
      @blankbrian  10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      very true but soft wheels won't slide as well when powersliding so you'd be more likely to get caught up and pitched to the concrete. Also bombing hills is really tears up your wheels and soft wheels tend to get flat spots easier. Thanks for watching!

    • @MaxMercZ
      @MaxMercZ 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lol yea i know i use hard but if u just wanna roll small hills and neibhorhoods and not get yelled at by old ppl soft is stealthy but hard is the only way to go if u really wanna be diverse espesially without trick decks so u dont result in razor tail to stop

      There are kind of two different ways of bombing hills that I see. For some people, it's going down really big hills and basically hanging on for dear life because you're moving way too fast to do any tricks, which is what you're talking about. But there are also people who do it in a more mellow way, where they just find gentle-ish hills and use lots of power slides to slow down so they can do ollies, kick flips, etc. The momentum from the hill makes it so you don't have to always push the whole time, even though you aren't going super fast compared to the other way of hill-bombing. There is nothing wrong with either style, I've done both and they are both fun. At the end of the day, I'm just glad to see people on a skateboard having fun and especially teaching others.

    Ehh. Wish I'd seen this earlier today, just bombed my first hill on my longboard, made the mistake of having loose trucks because I like carving.
    Speed wobbles kicked in, someone walked in front of me and I couldn't deal with both.
    I went down hard.
    All things considered I was lucky I rolled when I fell, I only lost a couple of teeth. D:
    Now I've got a toothache and a minor concussion.
    10/10 will have to try the hill again, If I don't I might never skate again.

    Tbh best way to learn if you're a beginner and only have experience street skating/don't do a lot of transition and fast skating is to start with a long board with 70mm wheels just to get the basics of learning to control yourself at higher speeds going down hills and keeping balance as you carve and hit rougher ground/cracks. Once you learn the basics and gain your confidence and balance and muslce memory then you can switch to a skateboard. First time I ever hill bombed was on a 8.0 board w/ 54mm wheels and ate shit and decided to never try again.. then I found a long board in the open in the middle of a back alley randomly at 12am when I was blazing a joint with the homies. Hill bombed on it for a couple weeks and even on that when going real fast like 30/40mph i'd get wobbles in my legs and it would be sketch and I'd be really scared to dig in and deep carve at that speed, after like 1 month it was cake tho I had my low crouched surfer swag heavy caving style. Set up a 8.25 deck w/ 56mm wheels for cruising/bombing and sold the long board and haven't looked back since. Way better to learn on a long board first cuz you're much less likely to eat shit when u first start on a longboard compared to a skateboard

      +Jackson Oberhauser Barely. "Bombing hills is fun because you go fast. You'll need a board and a hill. Do powerslides. Use common sense/safety." Informative for beginners I guess. That is important, but really this seems like common knowledge.

      +DADDY FIERI Try it and come tell me it's boring. You can still ollie on a downhill deck at 20 mph. If you are too scared to then don't get on a board downhill.

      Longboards are only faster because of bearings and wheel size. If you push enough and have the skill to avoid speed wobble you can go just as fast.

    • @joshstarkey8883
      @joshstarkey8883 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Beni Wheel size and duro yeah. But the thing with longboards is they're stable, maneuverable and predictable going fast. They generally lean a lot more which keeps your feet on the board, along with deeper concave and coarser grip, and have board designs that reduce or eliminate wheelbite with big wheels.

    • @joshstarkey8883
      @joshstarkey8883 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ***** I don't understand that mentality. Sure, ride what you want, but there are different boards for different things. You don't see longboarders telling people their tre flip would be more respectable on a longboard because it's harder to do. That's not really the point.

      Krilliams then your wheels would get wrecked, and unevenly. just sorta kick the ground with your foot, works for me. if you have the money, or ride huge wheels, and rotate them, you should be fine.

    He powerslides like every 2 seconds... I Have a sharkboard with long board wheels and there is no powersliding. You just carve and keep applying weight in a direction. Never go strait down unless you have super tight trucks. this guys a wuss!
    TO AVOID SPEED WOBBLE KEEP CARVING BACK AND FORTH. APPLYING WEIGHT WILL FORCE YOUR TRUCKS TO STAY IN ONE DIRECTION AT A TIME.
