      How can you tell whether your wheels r soft

    • @ryankwan1368
      @ryankwan1368 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@JackCoeMtb remove them from your board and take out all bushings and washers. Then drop them from around hip height. The higher they bounce, the softer they are. Wheel hardness is measured in durometer (a) so a 78a wheel would be much softer than something like a 99a wheel.

This will help me tremendously. Especially the tip for backside powerslides that you mentioned regarding leaning over your toes more until you can dial it in! • @armleg
    @armleg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This video is really helpful! But there's one important thing that I found to be missing after I finally managed a powerslide: to pull your board back in, you have to unweight it again by crouching down, and pull in your shoulders and legs really forcefully.
    I practice pretty slowly on bad concrete; it's probably less noticeable when you have more speed. But if you find that your powerslides always bring you to a complete stop (or you fall off after getting 90 degrees), this might be your problem.
    EDIT: Turns out my bearings were super busted. If you find it difficult to keep momentum, you, too, may have busted bearings.

  • @DrifterD

    Great tutorial Justin! I have one question.. how are you able to powerslide on the road? The road looks really really rough and I can't wrap my head around how people are able to powerslide on such a rough surface! My wheels are 100A but even I cant seem to powerslide on a basketball court surface

    • @NeverStopImprovingSB
      @NeverStopImprovingSB  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It has a lot to do with believing it's going to work, committing to the trick with enough speed, and especially picking your weight up off of the board by bending down and springing up right as you start sliding the wheels.
      To get the hang of it, I'd recommend starting out on something way smoother than a basketball court (they're usually too rough like sandpaper), and you need to get some good practice slides in before you try it on the more difficult surfaces.
      Best of luck, and practice practice!

    You were talking about using a 99a wheel. So fun fact about durometer. The ASTM (standards body who governs stuff like the shore durometer scale) recommends moving to a different scale if you take a reading below 10 or above 90. Skateboard wheel companies know that skaters want harder wheels and that bigger numbers will sell more wheels if the skater is uninformed. I would love there to be more honesty in the market, but such is life. Anyway, a 100a is an inaccurate reading due to how the durometer meters work. An accurately measured equivalent would be an 85b.
    And contrary to what Bones likes to tell people, the difference between the a scale and the b scale is not 20: www.ttequip.com/knowledgelibrary/TechPageShoreDurometerConversionChart.htm
    I'm glad Bones is helping push people to use the b scale, it makes way more sense for modern skateboard wheels. But it's good to encourage honest ratings so we can make better informed decisions when buying wheels. None of this probably matters to most people, and we'll skate a bunch of different stuff and then buy what we like, which is cool. But maybe some people are interested in this. I hope it helps someone, or maybe helps spread the word to improve the industry.

      What about you, is mabel davis your favorite park?

    • @Zebrooo
      @Zebrooo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I love the park. Since I learned to skate bowl at mabel, pretty much every other park just feels to shallow to me and I like the fact that it has mostly gaps with hips. Also I have a bunch of homies who really only skate at mabel.
      For me i dont really enjoy house because i dont like the mini half pipe and that its mostly flat ground. Which really sucks for me because almost every skatepark i've ever been to or seen is flat ground orientated.

    Are you using longboard wheels? I am not sure if my wheels will work they are 52mm globe skateboarding wheels, what are the best wheels?

    • @NeverStopImprovingSB
      @NeverStopImprovingSB  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Marc Franquesa I'm using pretty much the opposite of longboard wheels, but whatever wheels you have, they'll still work. If you notice that you're getting flat spots on your wheels though (i.e. after you do a powerslide, it sounds like you're riding a motorcycle), you should probably stop powersliding on those (the flat spots will go away after a while on their own just from regular use) and consider getting some wheels with a higher "durometer," which is the unit measure of hardness for skateboard wheels.
      I personally use 101a durometer wheels in this video and I've never had them get a flat spot.

      I very strongly believe it's because your wheels might be a little too soft (and therefore too frictiony) for sliding when there's no water. Don't freak out though! If you get a trick board one day (or borrow someone else's) it should still work ;)
