There was a song they used to play over the PA system at the end of each day. Super melancholic piano followed by a bilingual announcement about the store being closed, we will reopen for your convenience the following morning. I always wondered if there was a customer who was there at closing and then so eager they came back at 9 the next morning. If anyone has a copy of the song I'd love to have it.

Sears was truly a remarkable retailer in its time. The 70s to 2000s with their private labels was their peak.

Dom Nagovski thier objective right now is to hold on for as long as possible to squeeze every last done of profit. They know they are dying and accept it, they just want to see how much they can milk it. Thier CEO said something like that, I can find the interview if I look hard enough.

It was sad to watch this. The Sears near me closed late last year and going there during the last months was depressing. Seeing all the usable space slowly shrink with vast unused areas like in this video. I remember when the store opened with great fanfare, it was the first store open in a new mall and was always crowded. My wife worked there for 20 years and retired while the store was still healthy.

  • @KoubuPilot

Robin Sparkles must feel so sad! Today, Jan 28th, was the final day of Sears at the now closed Fiesta Mall, here in Mesa, AZ (where so many of your grandparents stay in the winter). It's my childhood Sears and mall during the 80s. Went yesterday to such a bare store. They had apparel upstairs and what's left of other stuff downstairs with the escalators still operating. Since they also liquidated the fixtures during the liquidation sale, it was cool on these visits to see small businesses buying up the fixtures. They even come back with UHAUL truck rentals to haul them away. They've been able to benefit.

The local sears at promenade mall got the rebranding (one of the first I believe) and Reno, at the time I thought “why now? This is a waste of time and money should’ve done this 15 years ago” And I also made a prediction it’d be the last to close...... and sure enough it was ....

Foot traffic in malls has decreased by double digits in most areas of North America. People rather stay home and click to buy. I’ve seen an insane amount of stores close at my local mall in the last two years. Companies have to adapt or die.

Just like me you had a very specific interest (you - abandoned Disney, me - dead malls) and has since expanded to all abandoned things. I remember when the abandoned PA turnpike popped up in my recommendations and I was like this is gonna be stupid, then I watched the whole hour long video of people vlogging their hike and looked up more. Then route 66, abandoned motels, factories, houses, DISNEY, there's always more. I just like learning the history and wondering what occurred that people would suddenly leave. Anyway, if there's anyway you could get into a closed sears location I'd love to see that video too.

They closed the one locally and it cuts off the north end of the mall. There's currently no north end mall access.
I wasn't there on the final day but I did get there on the day just before and they still had a fair bit for sale. But even at 80% off, much of what was left would still would cost $15 or $20. And for at least a week it was hard to find any pants that weren't larger than size 32 or smaller than size 46. I did pick up a few things at really good price but it wasn't worth getting something you weren't actually in need of.
I'm curious as to whether they had a blowout final hour sale the same way Zellers did.

There was some news (that I don’t clearly remember) that Sears was gouging prices before they went belly up and there was one person where they bought a jacket or something (idk what it was) and once they brought it home they peeled the price sticker off to reveal a lower price.
Once it got media attention, Sears canada said “no, you can’t tamper with the prices, you’re lying, we raised prices beforehand, etc.”

I went to the one in Barrie with 3 days left... was able to grab 2-10 packs of highlighters and 2 pairs of dress pants for $35 bucks. Also went on the last day- the cash was lined up 20 people deep with 6 ladies on cash in the back corner. And now i walk by it and the lights are still on.

Do they still have the Muzack going? Crazy... I worked part-time at Circuit City up until the very last day of my store being open. Employees didn't really care anymore for the most part... Corporate hired on the Clearance Company and left the stores alone for the most part after that. Crazy to watch a store go from full to nothing...

Jake, fascinating series. So sad. Long history of Sears. Kenmore still lives in USA. But 4 how long?

Mike Lamprecht it does. Kenmore is made by Whirlpool. Someone will buy the name.

Exactly same for me. Think I got mine at London Drugs, of course after buying the wrong style out of desperation which just ripped easily.

But wow, I thought the store closed a long time ago. Well, rest in peace Sears and thanks for the horrible memories of being dragged there against my will. :)
