I remember 30 years ago when they first opened this Sears, which they had moved from their Rainier Avenue location in Renton. It was a *beautiful* store, and a fun place to be, along with the rest of Southcenter Mall in Tukwila
Frederick & Nelson was once a department store chain in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States of America that started in 1891 and went away in 1992
It’s always amazing how these moronic store employees will all of the sudden and out of the blue be worried about store policy and other nonsense.Maybe if they did the job they were hired for (customer service) they wouldn’t be looking for a new job.Honestly how many times have ANY of these employees approached you to ask if you needed any assistance finding something or if they can answer your questions?Never, they’re only interested in imposing their will on you and scolding their customers.Screw these idiots.
They approached us to ask if we needed any assistance finding something and/or if they can answer questions. It was a really good experience back then. Even this year. And now the catch here is that the staff was losing there job right by the holidays due to the store closing. RIP
The manager has to enforce company policy which is what she was doing. This store was focused too much on the tool box market that was its downfall. Thanks for the tour lad.
But did you notice that she didn’t approach him to ask if he needed any help? She was only interested in acting like a big shot and saw her chance to scold a customer.
It is actually 2021 that the third floor closed down. Used to have electronics up there. Modernised Montgomery lift had a third floor lockout added by Schindler in October 2023
Cascadian Co just went out of business. The Southcenter location on floor 2 right outside of F&N/Sears was originally a Wet Seal. Store has been sitting vacant ever since it closed down this year
Fortunately JCPenney, Macy’s, and Nordstrom are staying open. Dick’s Sporting Goods should consider opening a new House of Sport in the soon to be vacant Sears spot.
The Parkway Super Center, not to far from the Southcenter Mall, has a Dicks Sporting Goods (DSG) and a Macy's Furniture Gallery. BuyBuyBaby has just shifted to online only so all 11 stores that reopened are closing again. This Store should have downsized to the first floor for DSG to move in to all floors above but now it seems that the deal couldn't be finalised and the Sears at Southcenter lost to much money. The Sears in Arizona that closed in July 2019 was gonna be downsized for DSG to move in but deal couldn't be finalized. As of last month, Sears is looking for rent concessions on all of its remaining stores as this is there new survival strategy as Sears retail operations in general
As for Sears Outlet which was acquired in 2019 and converted to American Freight in 2020 by Franchise Group which just filed for bankruptcy this month, the furniture retailer is going out of business, all locations are closing in all 40 states, including the Tacoma location by the end of the year. If you could also go to Tacoma and film that former Sears Outlet store as well before it closes with the rest
It seems that Tacoma has always been depressed. I remember visiting my grandmother who owned an apartment house there. We would walk along the sidewalks and see rows and rows of closed businesses and empty storefronts. And this was when I was a teenager and in my late twenties, back in the 1960s and 70s. From what my mother had told me, it was a boom town during WWII, but fizzled out after the war ended and has never recovered. About the only thriving business still around at that time was the K-Street bar. Haven't been in Tacoma recently, so I don't know if even that still exists.
But if this store closes with no buyer of the property..... the anchor will likely remain abandoned, just like the majority of stores that closed with no buyer of the property, including 2 in Spokane that closed down in 2019-20. The Sears in Union Gap is still abandoned with the sign still hanging on. You should have just said to the manager you don't film to cause any trouble but to just document the store to make memories and preserve history. But yeah..... The liquidators basically just inform the staff and store managers to not let people film liquidating stores at this point. When you filmed the store last April it was an even better experience and the staff didnt see nothing wrong back then. As for Sears (as a retail company) as a whole we are now down to 8 nonclosing stores. The rest could also be shut down like Sears totally collapsed from Canada as a whole in 2018. The website, brand name of Sears as well as intellectual property rights could also be sold at any time as well. This is what happened to other retailers that once closed up shop. Rue21 was just bought out by new leadership and management this year
It was also because the store was losing to much money as well. Store property has been put up for sale with the other 5 Sears in Washington State since March 2018. Sales dropped like a rock and the retailer was losing money that time
@ Yeah no kidding. That store is looking as empty as the store in Whittier, California. Probably wouldn’t have been losing as much money if they actually put merchandise in the stores instead of closing off the third floor once they ran out of merchandise. I hope they find another tenant for the recent Sears closures in Washington and California. Although, the stores only look like they’re temporarily closed because Transformco never removed any of the signs from the stores when they recently closed in California and Washington.
All of those large appliances -- black, gray, stainless steel with a few white ones among them -- no wonder there isn't any interest, anymore. Dull, boring, somber, bleak -- no color, no attractiveness -- yes, they're probably functional, if that's all anyone is interested in, but I remember when there was once visual aesthetic beauty in our lives, even in utilitarian things. Beauty AND function was once a winning combination that was actually uplifting in our environments. No more. And I think that reflects the bleak and downtrodden spirit of our times. Another example of this is rudeness in staff. People just aren't cordial, anymore. They just don't feel that way, nor perceive the world that way. Another sign of our times. Hope remains that this shall change back to when folks were more joyful and creative, and once again our environment can be visually pleasing, even where practicality is concerned. Our homes will look like homes inside and not industrial warehouses. There's a place for the latter, but I don't think it's very uplifting when it comes to our personal atmospheres. And maybe our stores can be healthy, again. The internet isn't everything.
You've got a point. Back in the 90's & 00's, white & silver were common colors for electronic devices. It reflected a booming economy and hype for a new Century & Millennium.
This originally was a Sears store that was moved from Rainier Avenue location in Renton back in 1994. Those were the days! Southcenter Mall was built in 1968.
Another thing I've noticed in this store is how flimsy so much of the merchandise is. That table and chairs set in the stills looks like it wouldn't take much to collapse it. Things just aren't made well, anymore. That's a big part of the problem. Products packaged without instructions, with missing parts, cheap materials, poor customer service -- it has all combined to make the buying experience dismal for customers. We need to start manufacturing things in this country again, and staffing companies with folks who take pride in their work from the CEOs on down to the janitors. And higher-ups need to treat them right, including paying them decent wages. There are a lot of areas of justifiable blame for the downfall of these businesses. Poor quality merchandise is just part of it.
Shopping at Sears, even online, helps the whole retailer to make money and become profitable. That is what is definitely a necessity because shoppers are the most important for profitability
Mournful music at the very end, with the stills. Captures the whole sorry atmosphere of the place. Something larger and broader is going on in our culture, our society and with our human spirits. I hope for positive change on the horizon.
Not yet but soon. 8 left but soon to be zero with all ceased retail operations. All Sears Hometown Stores have been closed since 2023 and Sears Outlet / American Freight is going out of business due to the bankruptcy of parent company Franchise Group which acquired Sears Outlet in 2019 with Sears Hometown being acquired by Transform Holdco that same year
But unfortunately the covid pandemic stopped that revival attempt, made things even worse and brought challenges. Fry's Electronics closed up shop without warning on February 24 2021 due to massive change in retail and challenges posed by covid
@@Noahs_Retail-Urbex_Adventures You should not have said you didn't have permission. You should have just stated that you filmed to preserve history and make memories and also that you wanted to document store before they perhaps close down
Sorry I don't mean to be mean but what is with the goddamn "heh... heh... heh" every 2 seconds!? just so you know, I cant help making those noises, if you dont like it then dont watch my videos. Also the camera pointing at the floor was me adjusting my camera or trying to not get people on camera. Also the majority seems to like this video. Clearly your the minority here.

Westfield Southcenter Mall in Tukwila that opened in 1994 will close on Dec. 15. Employees were told last week.

Closing on December 15th? ... the 15th?!!
That's the ultimate of just giving up!
The Sears in Burbank, CA recently came back from the dead and yet it looks very similar to this one with huge sections walled off and very thin stock.
The Sears in Whittier, on the other hand, has scant inventory and all floors above are closed. Similar experience at Fry's Electronics
Fry's closed up shop with out notice February 24 2021

Sad to see this store close down. Wonder if the signs will be removed or still hang on?
We Will just have to see what happens after this store closes
If I come back on the 15th I will try to get one of the smaller signs on the inside of the store.
Was never a regular customer of Sears but them not being in the mall anymore is crazy
Thanks for this, i wish i could have did a vid b4 my Sears closed
