    Grew up being taught how to hunt without stands or blinds. I cant tell you how many times we have looked eye to eye. Hunting this way has made my immediate reaction to freeze no matter what position I am in.
    Situating myself for the shot, raising my rifle or bow. When that neck moves I freeze until the deer goes back to whatever it was doing. I'm constantly looking for the next thing that will obstruct the deer's vision and I will make my largest moves quickly. If there's nothing between them and me well I think I actually move slower than the DMV in that case. Lol
    I now enjoy trying to get away with it under multiple sets of eyes in the area because 1 or 2 just isn't usually a challenge anymore.
    Patience, exstreamly subtle movements, prior preparation to eliminate unexpected noises and being more alert than the deer.
    The closest I have been to a doe was about 3 and a half feet. I was sitting on the outside edge of a downed tree top. She walked right to me and passed beside me. She didn't have the slightest clue I was there. I carry a bowie knife on the hunt and if I would have had it in my hand I could have reached out and touched her with the tip I believe. My eyeballs are the only thing I felt safe enough to move at that distance though. I will never forget that day. If she knew what she had done I bet she wouldn't have ether. Lol.
    Anyway, good luck and good hunting.

      80% of deer hunting is setting up the right place and the right time period. If you have your own land you set your own stands you set your own feeder you have plots you have cameras,you know exactly where those deers are going to be because that's where you want them to be because that's where you feed them.
      you know exactly what time they're coming in and out because you position cameras you MAKE the right place and you make the right time sure every time you go out there and sit your stand is that big one going to come out that you've been waiting for that you seen on your camera? no, but he will come there eventually or was he there but seen or smelled you before you ever had a chance at him? Did you not do your part ? If you do everything right you can get them there it's not a sure thing but it's definitely not right place right time, you first have to have deer in your area then you have to get them on to your fields then you have to do your part as a hunter to be able to harvest that dear

      Jeremiah Fyan some of you folks need to realize tracking and stalking deer isn’t possible in every part of the world. For one, it’s illegal in a lot of places. Still hunt only here. Too many idiots out there, to be waltzing through the woods. And thickets where you can’t see 5 yards in front of you and have to jack up a tree at least 30 feet just to be above all the under growth.
      Loggers just strip cut my area and now I can finally scout tracks and see where the deer are actually traveling. Turns out, the deer are in my area, they were just traveling through a thicket 150-200 yards on the other side of a bottom.
      Hopefully I’ll catch a big buck slipping in a couple weeks.

    In my youth, I was one heck of a still hunter. I'm a traditional archer so I always had to be within 40 yards, preferably far closer. I've shot deer as close as twenty feet away by stalking them. Lots of fun. Now that I'm over 40 I prefer a blind in front of a food plot. Way less work.

  • @reb1050
    @reb1050 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    For the majority of my life, I hunted from the ground still hunting/stalking. Now old age and health problems prevent me from doing it. Although I still hunt from the ground, I do it in a deer blind. I read an article many years ago that actually got me into the still hunting/stalking. It was called "The Curtain of Vision". Simply put, in the woods, all animals can see just so far and then it's like a curtain has been drawn and they cannot see beyond that point. Since deer cannot see behind them, if you jump one in the woods, it often will run straight away until just before it reaches it's curtain of vision and then it will either circle right or left so it can see you and what you are doing. Often, once they do, they will stop before they slip off into invisibility. So, while walking, I never cared if I was seen or not. I just slipped through the woods until the deer appeared (often flagging me in the process), stayed perfectly still, and then bring my binoculars up and watched for it to make that circle and stop. For my first 50 yrs. of hunting, I never stuck out. I always killed at least one and usually 2 deer a year and at least 75% of them were killed using the method described above. BTW, my hunting areas were Southwest Arkansas and Northwest Georgia.

  • @piobmhor8529
    @piobmhor8529 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Very true about your silhouette from a tree stand. I hunted for years from a store-bought tree stand without any camouflage and wondered why some years were a bust. A few years ago, I went with my wife to check my cameras and lay out some bait apples. While I was swapping the cards in the cameras, my wife sat in my tree stand (probably thinking “what the hell does he see in this?”. I could see her silhouette starkly contrasted with the clear blue sky. I might as well been hunting with a neon sign saying “Warning! Hunter here!”.
    Using my old Army training (the five Ss of camouflage, Shape, Shine, Silhouette, Shadow and Sound), I purchased a cam net from a surplus store and draped it behind and around the seat and shooting bar. I couldn’t believe the difference. I get my deer every season now. All the money we spend on high tech gadgets, and my fix was a simple $30 surplus camo net. It took care of my shape, silhouette and shadow, shine and sound were already taken care of.

    I've got a acorn spot where the camera picked up two does feeding at 1:30 in the afternoon, and another day 8 in the morning, problem is they show up on the cam about twice a week. My question is do they alternate between different feeding areas everyday or were they still feeding in that spot but just out of sight of the camera? And why the heck were they feeding that early in the afternoon?it's public land with quite a bit of human traffic. Weird.

      where I live we have several fields that are farmed every year and usually a mix of corn and alfalfa, which deer love. And in the winter the alfalfa stays green and they eat that. I'm pretty sure they are bedding down in the woods here because there are some thickets in there, but I do not own much of the wooded property so I don't go in very far I hunt the fields edge. Btw; if you have a trail camera, you need to secure it either in a box or at least bolt it to a tree or fence post. I had my camera stolen 2 weeks ago, it was on my property, at the fields edge, no one should have been there, but someone got it anyways. That thing may disappear on you eventually, especially if its on public land or if there are houses near by like in my situation.

    As much as I try to learn about Whitetails, mostly geared toward hunting. A magnificent doe is bedding in my back yard, she comes abt 11:30pm (I hear a thud as she jumps the fence) and leaves for the day 9:30am.I see her bedding and eating throughout the night & bedding in the morning. So graceful I get an incredible feeling of peace watching her. We're in an urban area with a large park abt 1/2 mile behind my house. My backyard all fenced, front facing a busy road. She goes out of her way to get here it seems. It's July, I read they leave their fawns on forest floor for hours. Hard for me to determine her age, looks young, big and healthy, her coat is solid, even, not a mark on it. I've seen her drink from the bird bath and she eats a lots of my plants & grazes but it's worth giving her a hand in survival. How can I help her in winter? What can I leave outside for her? We get a ton of snow. Also she looks in the Windows a lot and stands facing them sometimes. She's turned her head at me and I see her big eye and then she turns head back. I just walk backward away from.the window. So far she hasn't bolted and seems relatively unafraid in the yard. Is this what you call an urban deer? I wonder about her.

    I have taken several deer in blue jeans and dark shirt. I do use camouflage clothing but I know without a doubt breaking up my silhouette is by far more important. I ground hunt only, I tuck myself back into cover as low as possible. Another tip is don't sit right at the edge of a field when hunting a field. Set yourself a few yards back into the darkness and make sure you don't have light behind you exposing your silhouette. Remember darkness is your friend when hunting.

Also when deer can smell anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 time better than us, it opens a whole different world we have no idea how predict what cover scents will work and won’t or how effective they really are to us for hunting. If it is anything like dogs, they smell in layers where they smell each ingredient separately but not like us all mixed together.

The best way to get in the woods is to imitate a squirrel meaning take a few steps with the tip of your foot move leafs around also a huge tip is learn how to make that squirrel bark sound with your mouth me and my dad do this walk up on deer all the time evening when they spool make that sound doesn't effect them. Also scent control and wind direction is key deer will smell you and be gone you won't even know it. Seen it this year I was set up on the edge of a field before my dad got out he was walking to a stand and the wind shifted a nice buck instantly got up and moved off that made me think how many times has that happend before

It was getting closer and closer, so close in fact that I decided it must be a squirrel or grouse. It got really, REALLY close, and then the noise stopped. For a few minutes I sat perfectly still and could hear nothing else. I very slowly turned my head and almost jumped out of my own skin - there was a doe standing right behind me. I quite literally could have kissed her full on the lips had I wanted to. She jumped, I jumped, she screwed off, no shots fired. Thee is also a deer's ability to smell not to mention needing to take into consideration how we will see a deer have it's head to the ground and then all of a sudden look up in the opposite direction toward the edge of the woods that's at least a hundred yards away and not long after, another deer walks out and so hearing is more likely what it is until there is deeper research on the actual specifics for what a deer's vision is and isn't capable of

      They do not see the blaze-orange like we do. They see more as a block of uninterrupted tone, which makes natural camo in your stand even more important. Also, it is key to make sure you do as much as possible to eliminate ultra-violet (UV enhancers in detergent, etc) by using after market treatments if needed. Best, Daniel Schmidt

      I don't know how deer eyes vs. horse eyes, but I know blaze orange scares the bah geese's out of my wife's horse. we've had him for 23 of his 28 year's and he knows what I look like, my scent, my voice and how I walk and move. I can walk up to him in his pasture wearing any street clothes and he pays me no attention. as soon as I put on blaze orange I cant get near him. he will snort and run away.

    Deer also memorize every little detail of their habitat. When deer move around in alert mode they can spot a candy wrapper at 100 yards or better. I have also seen deer just walk right into a new campsite completely unaware when there was no hunting pressure. My wife and I had a doe lead a 8 point buck into our camp within 10 yards. We had a campfire, a 10 man tent, camp chairs and my truck there. It was the opening day of deer season and my wife shot both while sitting in her camp chair. Deer without hunting pressure will walk right into your lap. But once hunting pressure exist they become very alert to everything.

    A whitetailed deer is a blind dog, compared to an elk. You want challenge that often requires 400-yard (or longer shots), take up trophy elk hunting...it will REALLY make you re-think how 'attentive' deer are, and put it in a far more useful perspective.

    The most fun I ever had deer hunting was sneaking up in fresh quiet snow on two does. I wasn’t interested in taking them only in learning what I could get away with. They let me load my rifle, take a couple photos text those photos, walk back to my gear and then come back to them at about 75 yards a second time. All from downwind over about 30 minutes starting in relative darkness into broad daylight. What a riot. It was as though they couldn’t SEE me. Like it didn’t register in their brain.

    I think that deer have photographic memory and that they are constantly scanning and making sure everything is basically the same as it was the last time they came through. When something is different it causes the to change their paths, weather its the lingering smell if another animal, if anything is disturbed or broken, etc. Their hearing is amazing many of times when another dear enters a field its because they kind of know certain deer and their movements and times of exit and entry. We know this of dear and they know it of each other, especially when they've been following their routines unbothered by human interference and predators.

    Deer in low-"pressure" areas are a completely different animal from those on alert. A low-p deer who has never seen a human, in the deep woods, will walk under your stand, and chill there, a high-p deer in semi-suburban fields/woods will scent you from way off, no matter the wind direction, and may still approach but is more likely to eventually see something out of place and look through you in your $25 ebay ghillie suit and if you are perfectly still, may go back to eating or begin exiting slowly, or blow out of there fast (Ideally, close one eye before she spots you, and squint out of the other (makes a difference sometimes) don't move, ever, before or after you see deer around you, they can see a wide angle, but usually if they are eating, you can move snail slow to draw or position). How they respond to the split second of human scent that blew the wrong way, or to seeing a blind, ghillie suit or glint off something depends on their age... an old doe gets as cagey as mature bucks, people saying "deer" do this and "deer" do that, what age and sex deer, and how much and what kind of pressure are present in an area? Scents do work, maybe not how you wished, estrous draws doe and young buck following those doe which are following your pee scent in pre-rut. Deer on high alert in pressure areas do smell your tracks NO MATTER if you have new boots aged in a shed with no scents for 2 years, sprayed with $40 scent spray and ozoned with a machine, they do smell the tracks, or see the footprints or something, I've watched them follow me, it's nuts. Low pressure deer must be less tuned in to the scent they have capability, but not interest in pursuing. As far as estrous scent, the young buck will slowly come up to the does you've attracted to your scents, they will run at the doe and effectively chase the doe away, trying to find the non-existent one with the estrous scent to breed, the doe, they will scatter. In rut you may lure a mature buck, but a grunt tube, sometimes antler rattling, will also work at times. If you use scent, they want to see her before coming out of cover, pressured deer, they will stand, invisible to you, for 30 minutes plus, no movement, out of sight range, and very capable of seeing any movement from you, especially when they've picked your scent up on an errant breeze wafting to them once for a single second, boom, they are on to you, now they stare and try to see, what is that stenchy thing? It's quite a game. You can hunt pressured deer from the ground, but you have to blend.

      sight is still way more important, staying hidden from the deer. one can easily overcome their scent-smelling, simply by always keeping the wind in your face. personally, I have never found scent to be an issue. don't use any scent-control products and often eat timmeh's on the way to the bush. hasn't prevented me from getting deer. but still-hunting is awesome, move 10 yards or so, stand behind a tree for 15 minutes or so, glassing everywhere in front of you, then pick a tree and move slowly to it, and repeat and repeat. works extremely well.

I would put my hands in front of me and wave at them and they would just look at me but as soon as I moved my hand outside the outline of the tree they were gone. All I was wearing was blue jeans and a shirt, nothing camo.

    I see a lot of comment about orange and I think folks are missing the point. We are taught the colors of the rainbow is a guy named Roy G Biv. That is what we see. There are colors past I and V (Indigo, Violet)-like ultraviolet and other crap we cant see. Our spectrum is Roy G Biv. A deer's starts around Green and goes past ultraviolet. This is why orange is ok to wear.

    I like to ground stalk. I'll usually wear realtree extra green camo pants and jacket with a OD green backpack with water and such it in. One day I saw some tall Reed grass growing at the beginning of the trail I was taking that day. I cut some off and weaved it into the molle webbing of my backpack so it was long enough to go a couple inches over my head. And has some hanging off the sides to break up my shoulders. I was changing up positions at noon when I know deer aren't out and there usually seeking water or cover before 3pm when it gets cooler (or so I thought). I looked up and locked eyes with a doe about 75 yards away, on the other side of a cotton field. I started my stalk, grass growing faster then I was moving until I was about 50 yards away. There was cover between us by the cotton plants so I slowly got into a croutch and started to creep forward a yard or two every minute until I was 15 yards from a corner I could get a line of sight to her and make sure she didn't have young. I got to my belly and unbuckled my pack without making a noise almost as if I didnt exist. I crawled 10 yards to where I was feet from the corner and my knee cracked....I heard her haul ass into the tree line before I could breath. I just waited at the corner just barely able to see through the cotton plants incase she came back (I've learned they're curious animals and they will investigate what spooked them if you dont move). I didnt want to take a shot from where I first saw her because I wasnt positive I could make a steady shot since it was cold and my heart rate was elevated from the hike and I dont use shooting sticks.
    I'll pack make shift shooting sticks and keep cutting reed grass from now on though, and hopefully my 23 year old knees wont act like they have rice crispies in them next time lol.

    When I was 12 hunting a natural blind on a wind row I was dressed in Hunter orange from head to toe sitting on a lounge chair. The back of the natural blind was completely exposed as behind me was super thick briar and in front was a harvested corn field that the deer walked next to for cover as they moved from woods to woods. I was just sitting there with just a doe tag left towards the end of season early in the morning. The wind was blowing in my face. A doe out of no where jumps from behind me over my left shoulder. As I went to raise my shotgun another jumped over my shoulder. As I decided to take the second doe I had to wait for her to turn a little for a clean shot. Seconds later a nice buck jumped over my shoulder. I got the Doe. The moral of the story is that I was dressed in bright orange up wind. My stepfather witnessed the ordeal from another windrow across the field. In the truck on the weight station he said that they have to be blind as a bat and dumb as hell. We came to the conclusion that they are just overly jumpy. My first deer I got when I was 11. Last day of shotgun season and hunting alone as my stepfather had filled both his tags. The sun was getting ready to set and I had seen my parents return from town. I was disheartened by being skunked two seasons straight. I unloaded my 870 and lowered it down, exited the tree stand, and started down the field next to the woods towards the house. At the end of the woods I looked left into a very small clearing no more than 25 yards from me was a deer popped its head up and we went into a starring contest. I froze, and waited for her to continue to graze so I could load a shell. It took a few minutes of moving slow and pausing, but I got her. 25 yards, no cover, bright orange...The best advice I can give is...scout, scout, and scout. Don't waste money on camo and scents as they are blind and stupid but overly cautious, they will white flag you if you move quickly.

    I don't worry about them seeing me, I've gotten by with so much sitting on the ground and at times I didn't have the money to buy all the high dollar camouflage, what I fear more than anything is there nose, if I can fool that and I have foliage behind me and it didn't have to be close, deer are very good at seeing movement, I hunted brush in south Carolina because there was no tree's big enough to put a stand on. So you hunt on the ground and the wind is your best friend or your enemy. So studying food sources and learning when certain crops of acorns, foliage, fruits, berries and knowing what they eat and when, then comes bedding area's and once you have all this information and learn how to use it to your advantage you'll become a better hunter and take more mature bucks time and time again.

As soon as I walked around a doe popped out and ran to my right to get a better view of me. Unfortunately I did not have my bow and sidearm so I could shoot it. I walked another 25 yrds and found several fresh bedding areas. Between a low land and a couple of ridge lines.

    Their sense of smell and hearing is pretty good to. Also, movement will get you busted quicker than anything.
    They passed a law here in Virginia that makes it illegal to use any attractant that has any type of deer hormone in it, like doe in heat or doe in estrus. I think it's time we put a republican in the Gov's office.

      Ken Quesenberry yeah their hearing is usually what gives me away. They are suspicious of every little sound

    • @colecathcart8572
      @colecathcart8572 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That Murder Inc. I'm not too sure if Virginia passed the law for the same reason but in ontario you can not use attractants that have bodily fluids of deer, they must be artificial. Apparently to help stop the potential spread of diseases

    • @Scott.Farkus
      @Scott.Farkus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The companies that make the attractants raise their own deer and have strict immunization standards , so there's no chance of any disease being spread.

    • @colecathcart8572
      @colecathcart8572 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ken Quesenberry it's also very easy to make your own with deer already harvested so they just banned them in general in ontario, at least that's what the 2017 regulations say

    • @Scott.Farkus
      @Scott.Farkus 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, right. I can see the attractant enforcement officers checking for attractants now....."yep, it's turning blue".
      All this time I thought it was the bureaucrats imposing their uninformed logic on the public.

    After your deer is down and has been dead for a while, ever notice the deep blue-green eye? That’s the blue-green rods/cones he mentioned, reflecting light back like when your eye doctor looks at your retina.

  • @jeremylaxton8639
    @jeremylaxton8639 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They have two retinas, one interprets images, and the other intensifies light. They are born with the ability to know a predator for instance, predators have two eyes facing the front, like humans, wolf's bears owls hawks. Grazing animals have eyes off to the side. Like cows, deer, horses act. They also know a meat eater because of the gases that escape through pores in the skin during digestion. This information is factual, not opinion. That's how they survive. That is the science of what your trying to describe in the title of you video.

    How do they see in 2D, yet can see depth of field so well?

    • @theshagidelicgamers4232

      Eyes on the side of the head make it so they see 2d from the sides and good depth kf field from the front

  • @jimmyjohnson7041
    @jimmyjohnson7041 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ive walked across a field many times....in a direct straight line to the deer.......not moving any part of the upper body. Only moving the legs. Since your legs are lower in grass or anything else deer never see your legs move. After all........your approaching head on. I often can get within 50 yards of a deer. But the main thing is.........keep the upper body motionless ! Like a can with legs under it. It works !

    I've never taken a deer in a stand, always still hunting. My grandfather taught me to give the deer as much chance to see you as you do them.

      Hollow Point I respect that. I used to hunt on the ground but back problems have made sittin on the ground almost impossible so I switched to stands. I've had a few old does look up and spot me.

    One very simple fact that this fella and you commenters overlook. Is the natural order of things in the woods. When you walk through the woods what happens, birds fly up, squirrels run up trees, deer jump up. Up is a sign of alarm in the woods. Down is a sign of calm. Deer have great peripheral vision, if in their periphery they see something go up it draws their attention to that spot. Things going down keeps them calm. When I sit in the stand I keep my weapon pointed up. Then draw down on a deer.

    hey guys I'm a new subscriber to ur channel I saw the episode about shooting coyotes or not and on our property I take em out Avery chance I get cuz we know we have too many coyotes and it effects our deer herd however when we notice the coyote population is lower than normal we stop shooting them so our wildlife management stays on a good predators to prey ratio and if I'm hunting on new property or any where else I wld get permission to take coyotes before shooting them thanks and keep the awesome and helpful shows coming we learn every time we watch the show

      Blaze Gulisack Good point Blaze, I didnt think of tree stands. My brain goes straight to the knuckle heads in Texas where I grew up who would feed em all year, go sit in a stand/blind, drink shitty beer and then blast a deer with no less than a 300 win mag cause apparently white tail are know for being tough to kill, THEN they would gloat around town like they were the great white hunter. Pathetic.
      Tree stand hunting I can appreciate a lot more, picking the tree, the right side of the tree for petes sake, reading the land and how the animals might move in etc.

      @murderinc.hunting7686 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      The Eastern front im glad im not the only one who finds that shit ridiculous. Dudes buy most expensive camo known to man and then sit in a blind. Oh and you gotta wear camo everday (even your wedding) so people know you hunt, and slap tons of hunting decals all over your truck lol

      J H im from central PA and we are overrun by these idiots. Grice gun shop is one of the biggest gun shops in the east and their busiest day of the year is the day before gun season. People literally buying guns off the shelf and taking them out the next day without sighting it in or practicing. And wal mart is packed with people buying their license the day before, cant forget new camo and blaze orange, and face paint so they can look like the boogey man

      Zachariah L walk on the ball of your foot. Only shift your weight to your front foot when you're sure you aren't standing on sticks or rocks. Even when doing this its really hard to be quiet on dead foliage

      Same here in NH. I always "love" watching dudes try and still hunt pass my stand. They almost always are terrible at it. But every once and a while they drive a few deer to me earlier than I expected them.

    I do a lot of running. once while running in the forest I turned to run through some cedar trees. soon after I entered those trees I collided with a deer. it's true. that deer jumped so high it practically vanished in the sky. never saw it again.
