Great content and presentation. All awesome tips every good hunter should impanelment. One thing I'd suggest is sometimes hitting one light grunt ever so often depending on the situation and/or reason. Works great during the rut or if you jump deer but can't see. Liked and subbed just bc,
That’s what I do I rake paths to all my blinds and tree stands. Another little thing I do when I’m hunting in a shooting house that’s off the ground looking over a field I’ll put some camo netting or a sheet of plywood that covers from platform to the ground and I walk in on the raked trial on the backside of house so when I get to ladder or steps to get in shooting house deer want see me. I cut a hole in the sheet of plywood so I can peak through to see if anything out there in the field before I climb up. I have shot quite a few bucks that was already out in the field from behind that netting or plywood. Of course you got to have the wind right.
Your knowledge & technique is helpful and appreciated. The only thing I'd recommend changing is that instead of making big heel-toe steps, tippy-toe six steps at a time. If it's pre-rut, everything 12 sets of 6 steps act like a buck and make and make a scrape. I've had my target buck hear my approach and think I'm a rival buck. By the time you climb your stand, get an arrow and your release ready for a shot. I've had my target bucks walk right in range while curiously looking for that intruding upstart buck.
timing works where I am okay, sometimes I can go to a different spot other than a stand that I like but 2 am in the morning I may want to scare them off somewhat and place myself somewhere wind doesn't cause a problem and wait for them to return about twighlight time, the scent change I may use at times is if I see left over apples on any wild trees and cover my clothes with a rotten apple
This is probably a stupid question. If it's pitch black dark? Flash light or no flash light? Because it's hard to avoid some sticks if you cant see them.
Pretty good video. Metal sounds and sticks breaking are your worst enemy and you do hear deer running off, hitting the doe bleat might relax them … as long as they didn’t smell you. Its helped me a lot over the years
I read an article once where the fellah suggested shuffling occasionally when walking, like a squirrel or turkey (if they're in your area) as opposed to the rhythmic walking patterns humans use.
Dad taught me to step slowly with the front of your feet. Deer know the difference if you're walking and placing the heal first then the front or ball of the foot because it makes two noises instead of 1. Nothing else walks like we do.
I always stop every few steps and then and scratch the ground with my foot to imitate a feeding turkey, deer, or squirrel. I usually have a turkey mouth call in my mouth when entering and exiting the woods and even when stalking.
Thank you for the video. This is my first year heading out hunting. I've been a hobby archer for decades, but never taken it I to the field before now. I will be 100 archery this year, but I'll add shotgun and rifle next year. I live in British Columbia, in the Okanagan mountain valley. So, that means we have Elk, Deer, Moose, Wolves, Cougars, Wolverines, Bobcats, and Black Bears and Grizzly bears. We also have Bison and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Goats, especially further north. But we definitely have bears and Cougars. We have a backyard black bear right now this week, and at least one Cougar in the area. I definitely see the value in having even a simple over/under to fall back on, when out with my bow or even my Xbow. Something that can end a bad conflict. Anyway. I appreciate any advice you have for an archer starting out in the forest this winter.
That's awesome! I live in Indiana. I don't have all those big game options. You are truly blessed my friend. I hope you enjoy applying your bow skills with hunting. Good luck this season!
Best advice i received years ago from Chuck Adam's... when hunting from elevated stand, draw the bow and get on target - NOT by lowering arms! You always BEND AT WAIST. The same plane is created as when practicing on the ground. Combine that with a pendulum sight and my deer kill rate went skyhigh.
So if you have to go through a fairly open canopy portion of woods to get to your stand, and your choices are put a headlamp on red light so you don't step on sticks and stumble or crack the occasional stick, which is the least worst way to go? Give off a red glow to any deer with an eye shot, or snap a few sticks on your way to the stand and stay completely dark?
I hear ya. One thing that I have learned to do is create a log or fallen timber path to my stand from the field's edge. That way I can see the lined up timber on the forest floor to the stand. I keep this fallen timber line on my left (or right) as I make my way through the woods. I then remove any sticks, branches along that path that way I don't need a light to see obstacles or branches nor do I need the light to see my way with reflectors or marking tape. I know it takes extra steps when setting up, but it will pay off.
From lots of predator hunting, red light doesn't seem to bother deer at all. I've also seen good bucks not react to white light though, especially during the rut. One of the biggest bucks I ever killed was after I used a ridiculously bright white light to find my way into a tree I had prepped before (without bright eyes and still had to hang the actual stand - public). A key thing people don't think about is "timing". I was in the bedding area, so the "trick" is, I was sitting in the tree at 3am. Sunrise was 6. I killed him at 830am. So he probably wasn't anywhere near me when I made entry. Getting in a long time before daylight can definitely help with mornings. If the deer are feeding 1/2 mile away, you can be as loud as you want with the brightest light ever. Bonus is: Your ground scent will have dissipated quite a bit after an hour or more. That being said, I also go in at grey light, or just before shooting light, etc. All depends on the situation.
As long as you're not yelling or dropping everything you're fine. My buddy smokes a pack a day and just plays the wind, tags out every year. I bought a new climber and made a lot more noise than I would like to admit, less than 10 min after I finally made it into the stand, two walked by. I know old timers that plop down on a bucket in a Colts sweater and orange hat just to come dragging out a monster.
I have shot many deer in woods I have never been in before and for the most part it's not that far into the woods . I take my time .I walk super slow and do the 6 step and stop .and I try to stay to edges and not go out into the open . .. I have also had good success driving around and seeing where deer cross the Rd .and parking near there the next evening . And only going in the woods a few hundred yards .and trying to sit where the wind is in my favor . I have shot many deer this way and can usually almost see my vehicle . . Last year I shot two deer in two different places that I have never hunted hunting with a friend . Who didn't see any deer . Lol and I also believe you have to become one with the woods .kinda like meditation . Relaxing and melting into your surroundings.. I believe deer can sense your energy . Call me crazy if you want but it works for me ..
I have also thought about that the deer can sense your energy. Because very often when taking a walk and making a lot of noise you see deer but when hunting and very quiet you see nothing.
I have a bit of a walk getting to my stand and what's worked for me is getting in before daybreak and using a headlamp, the deer just stand there (like deer in headlights) and can usually walk right by them and they just keep eating. I take a few heel to toe steps then lightly move a foot back and forth making it sound like a squirrel then I wait a few seconds and do it over. I will say I use Dead Down Wind scent eliminator and put a couple drops of doe pee on my boots when I walk in.
So I get traveling with the wind in your face and 6x6 walk but...if you have a property that is boarded by other properties you aren't allowed to access and there is not a way to keep the wind in your face walking to the stand on your property. Also I can't 6x6 for 3/4 mile to the stand... My choices are to choose my setup based on the wind and hope that when I'm walking where I don't have the wind, they aren't bedded there..or I can blow through the area I'm not hunting and do my best for the last 100 yards. Any ideas? Thx!
I hear ya on the property being surrounded by private property limiting your access. One thing to do is to know where the bedding area is within your property. I'm sure that if you have been hunting it a while, you have an idea where the bedding area would be. With that said, I would avoid afternoon hunts where the wind is blowing your scent right into the bedding area. So you have 3/4 mile walk through woods? That's insane! But I understand if you have limited access points and you got to get where it's good. The only thing I can suggest for that is, When you set up your deer stand or someday in the near future, walk the path to your stand and move sticks and branches out of the way. This will reduce the sticks breaking. Pray that a rain comes through, it's raining here today so my crunchy leaf approach isn't a factor for a while. Obviously a 6x6 will take too much time, but the closer you get, you can try it. Best of luck to you and have a good deer season.
While using milkweed cotton to show me how the wind is blowing my scent away from me while in the stand, I'm not sure how an Ozonic could capture all your scent if used in the stand. I can see that it would be effective in a closed container with your clothes or one for your vehicle, but remain skeptical for the tree stand one.
Awesome video. I realized you cant beat them. Watch mark rober on dogs nose. Hes a nasa engineer and can't beat a dog. Id love know how a deer compares. Thanks for the video. Best thing i found is slow walking. Or turkey calling like a guy said. Awesome video thanks man
Get into the woods an hour before sunrise, take a nap. At sunrise you’ll see deer. Works for me every year, on public land. I fill my tags every year. Got a nice eight point and a doe so far this firearms season.
@@mandovapehater6988 Oh, so you hunting those Urban deer? Lol, those deer can get pretty big. Used to people around them a lot more. Nothing wrong with that, in fact, I'm a bit jealous. 😁
Good advice....I don't hunt from stands anymore...I hunt National Forest just find a good spot with sign, rub lines, scrapes, position myself in a good spot...you can get recon serious with hunting like you but to me takes some of the fun out.....but im 59 years old and use to take it very serious like you do but now I just find a good spot and hunt...I always shoot nice deer not trying to be a trophy hunter ....
Never once used any scents to cover myself or clothing, but I never rush to my stands either. I use nature to try to dim my own human scents, rub dirt on it and other simple things. I start out from camp in full darkness using a shaded colored light source. My camp is a long way from the stand.
I know scent killer and dead downwind are decent scent covers because I have sat with a south breeze blowing into the trees and the deer still can't find me. And yes, I learned about the six step method. Watch deer walk, they do this too. Best of all is when you have a blanket of soft snow to muffle your footsteps.
We always Clear paths to our stands .. private property & take our time .. they travel as usual as they get used to the work around the property . It all takes time 2 learn .
Absolutely hilarious. Alternative facts! Why overthink this? I think you should go into your stand at the beginning of the season and leave at the end. Hilarious!
I also tested deer lures and I will say this..only 3 actually worked without any doubt and I physically saw them work..they didn't scare any does the one was an apple scent I got wen I was 12 and not made anymore but omg deer loved it nd even I wanted to drink it the two others were prime line dominant buck tarsal and single doe estrous by still steaming all other lures ended up being tossed in the garbage along with grunt tunes I called more deer in fact huge bucks in with a coyote howler than any grunt tube and btw I put that tarsal gland and doe scent in scrapes and everytime I went back those scopes were huge and I've had bucks too far for any shot with a bow go by and hit that scent and come right to the wick hanging in tree and literally had thier nose on it and I mean all bucks from little spikes to 14pters with over 20 inch spreads but believe me or don't if you don't want to buy stuff that more than likely is a scam try passing in a scrape yourself you will be amazed how that works money saved guaranteed
Thanks for the information. I can conquer that urinating on a scrape does help bring in the attention. That apple spray sounds interesting. Too bad not available anymore. Thanks for watching.
An old cedar chest works mint for storage of your most used hunting clothes . Also when I still hunt on breezy days I prefer walking into a crosswind when I can because most deer bed with the wind at their back
I didn't use a stand. Cant sit for very long. I stalk deer. If you have turkey get a turkey call. While walking around if you make a little to much noise use the call and freeze for a minute. Dont pop your head over a hill. Learn to walk up. This is as when your foot touches the grass not the ground start lifting you foot your noise can get to almost nothing with practice. Pick the right day no wind and preferably wet ground. Hell i smoke while hunting. I found it is more movement the smell. I have watched many deer walk down the same trail i was on 10 minutes ago and not even be bothered.
Thats what my uncle had always told me is that its sound and not so much smell. And hes got a shed on his land full of big racks from all the bucks hes bagged. He has Native American in his family, hes an avid woodsman, uses a lever action with a scope mounted to it with a sling to hunt. My first hunt with him i had a break barrel single shot 30-30. I go out end of this month with my 7prc hopin i can bag a nice buck this year.
A windy day can really help you get in without the deer hearing you. The wind is loud and masks your sound. Trains are great too if you have one nearby
It’s always possible to spook a deer. But entering through or at a time where deer aren’t present is first step. Making sure your wind isn’t blowing into the area the deer are. Most of enter the stand in the easiest way possible. You might have to turn a 5 minute walk into a 45 minute walk. Most of us don’t want to that. Most of us walk through open fields in the dark. We think we have to get into the stand in the dark. That often isn’t the case. Waiting for the fields to clear is often better
If you walking to a woodlot with the wind in your face and a mature buck is there. He will lay on the edge with the wind to his back so he can smell the woods behind him and see what he can't smell. So your waking right into his trap. Try to go in from the side just off wind . Still hard to fool them. But that's your best chance at an older buck. Just saying thats what I've learned.
If you hunt where I hunt all this wind stuff is impossible. I literally have never had a solid wind in one direction. I hunt in an area between two mountains and the wind literally does circles. One hour it will blow out of the north then the next out of the southwest and then east. I have given up on trying to hunt the wind. I just go out and try to enjoy my time and if I get a nice buck then great. If not o well.
If dry leaves like in the vid I will scratch like a turkey and glass with binos. I have also just hopped and skipped with a grunt call right up to the tree in the dark and come daylight deer just thought I was another deer. Of course always with wind in your face. You absolutely have to hunt the wind. No hunting on light/variable wind days. Just don’t hunt. And, I wouldn’t recommend the hopping/skipping in the dark or daylight on public land 😂
I still hunt its the only way I can hunt after my back injury so I take my time. Sometimes I'll lightly slid my step and try to sound like a armadillo works pretty good. I've copied the sounds of other animals to and it seems to work more times than not. I also use the wind not only in my face but also the sound of a gust of wind with leaves falling creates a bunch of noise that I'd timed right will cover some of your sound from steps. All kinda tricks to it
This dude sounds EXACTLY like AwakenWithJP, especially in his older videos when he talked about things like being a vegan. Voice is dead on. It was bothering me for awhile before I pinpointed it. 😂
I would recommend walking to sound like a squirrel. Two quick steps a short pause and two quick steps and repeat. Walking and even pace alerts as unnatural.
I ride my atv all the way to my stand and I have filled my tags almost every year if i walk where i hunt i'll be completely bath in sweat I have seen deer bedding near my stand and they never run away till daylight they get up and walk away slowly not everyone hunts in the same environment so this tips might help some people but not everyone
One time i plant beans in my back yard.and one night i was relaxing out there .and 3 deers came so close like 20 foots and don't smell me.until i move one of the deer saw me..i think it's just natural.some time deer in my back yard eating in day time we walk close to them they not even panic..just looking at us .like they don't care..some deers are used to humans and other don't that's the difference
ive been trying to teach my son that for 20yrs he still goes to his stand like hes in a race,i told him to watch your video, he cant figure out why i go to my stand 2hrs before him........
Get in, get up, let the ground settle, there’s a fine line between taking your time moving slow and having all the deer standing there watching you make your way for an hour before nervously trotting off at first light.
when I go in in the afternoon I move along slowly and I'll kick the leaves around a little bit and I carry a turkey call and I just make easy calls and purrs and try to sound like turkeys walking. and there are times I'll make sounds like a deer. easy contact calls and bleats. some people say you could attract deer to you when you use a deer call and that might not be a good thing if you're just trying to get to a stand. well I'd rather sound like a deer and take that chance then sound like a human and have no chance. and when I am rifle hunting having deer come to me is what my object is anyway. but the most important thing is having the wind in your face. if you don't have the wind in your face you could float in mid-air and your deer will still leave the area if it gets any whiff of human scent. it's important to try not to spook other game that would tip deer off to danger in the woods.
I'm heading out this week for BC Moose and Black Bear. And after November 15th, Cougar. We have a Bow only 3 week White Tail deer season coming up in December as well.
I usually just put on some hooves and my deer antlers and walk to my stand. Never had any issues with spooking deer but I have to be careful with other hunters.

Great content and presentation. All awesome tips every good hunter should impanelment. One thing I'd suggest is sometimes hitting one light grunt ever so often depending on the situation and/or reason. Works great during the rut or if you jump deer but can't see. Liked and subbed just bc,
Thank you and thanks for added advice. Good luck this season
I hunt from a blind and rake a path to my blind. Doesn’t bother the deer at all. In the past I have used a turkey mouth call. Helps a lot. Calms deer.
That is awesome!
@@langbolary6127 Nice! Good idea on the camo netting! How often do you have re-rake with the falling leaves?
Turkey mouth call is the best!
@foxf6 that's great!
Can only try to control what you bring in to the woods i use everything ozone soap spray i use bins
And you'll still get busted
Your knowledge & technique is helpful and appreciated.
The only thing I'd recommend changing is that instead of making big heel-toe steps, tippy-toe six steps at a time.
If it's pre-rut, everything 12 sets of 6 steps act like a buck and make and make a scrape.
I've had my target buck hear my approach and think I'm a rival buck. By the time you climb your stand, get an arrow and your release ready for a shot.
I've had my target bucks walk right in range while curiously looking for that intruding upstart buck.
Nice! Thanks for idea!
timing works where I am okay, sometimes I can go to a different spot other than a stand that I like but 2 am in the morning I may want to scare them off somewhat and place myself somewhere wind doesn't cause a problem and wait for them to return about twighlight time, the scent change I may use at times is if I see left over apples on any wild trees and cover my clothes with a rotten apple
Interesting, thanks for share
This is probably a stupid question. If it's pitch black dark? Flash light or no flash light? Because it's hard to avoid some sticks if you cant see them.
That seems to be debatable by who you talk to. I use the red light sparingly myself
Pretty good video. Metal sounds and sticks breaking are your worst enemy and you do hear deer running off, hitting the doe bleat might relax them … as long as they didn’t smell you. Its helped me a lot over the years
Nice! Thanks for advice
I read an article once where the fellah suggested shuffling occasionally when walking, like a squirrel or turkey (if they're in your area) as opposed to the rhythmic walking patterns humans use.
I can see that, of course when daylight. If going to stand before daylight it wouldn't make sense as turkey and squirrels aren't on the ground yet
@@Get-2-ItOutdoors Good point!
@diabsoul 🙂
Dad taught me to step slowly with the front of your feet. Deer know the difference if you're walking and placing the heal first then the front or ball of the foot because it makes two noises instead of 1. Nothing else walks like we do.
Thanks for the insight
I always stop every few steps and then and scratch the ground with my foot to imitate a feeding turkey, deer, or squirrel. I usually have a turkey mouth call in my mouth when entering and exiting the woods and even when stalking.
That Works! Thanks for sharing. Good luck this season
Nice job. Will try the 6x6. Thanks!
Good luck this deer season!
@@solocam1962 That's very interesting. Thank You!
@@solocam1962 indeed.
A pendulum sight is next year for me I think.
I bumped a doe the other day doing the armadillo shuffle to my stand. Theres few animals louder then an armadillo in the leaves.
Lol, I swore a deer was coming my way the other day and it turned out to be an opossum
@@mrd4865Good points! Thanks for sharing
Green light works great.
I don’t use one when going to my stand in the morning.
I also don’t use a four wheeler or atv.
Walk.
@@Seriously-m1p Yes Sir (ma'am, can't tell by the handle)! I agree! Thanks for watching
😅 Good for them. I'm not that lucky. Have a good season
Not gonna call ya crazy because I can relate. Thanks for the share
I have also thought about that the deer can sense your energy. Because very often when taking a walk and making a lot of noise you see deer but when hunting and very quiet you see nothing.

I know scent is a big giveaway for deer. What do you think about suburban deer. Deer that live around people. That human scent is everywhere.
True, probably different scenario
Thanks and God bless.
Thank you!
Not me yesterday walking back to my boat with the wind at my back and coming across a 13pt laying down looking right at me 60 yards in. He's down
Nice!!
You must hunt an area not too pressured. Good for you. That would not work around here
Ty. Should help with my bow season. Only have a few days and a few hrs over a few months.
Good luck this season!
Cool video! What's your thoughts regarding the Ozonics unit?
While using milkweed cotton to show me how the wind is blowing my scent away from me while in the stand, I'm not sure how an Ozonic could capture all your scent if used in the stand. I can see that it would be effective in a closed container with your clothes or one for your vehicle, but remain skeptical for the tree stand one.
Smoking your clothes is the answer
Very good info Thankyou brother. I like the 6x6 step

Thanks for thoughts. I was given a new unit from a friend. I mostly hunt from the ground in self built hides. I have to try the damn thing! 😁
Might be more effective in a enclosed ground blind

Never once used any scents to cover myself or clothing, but I never rush to my stands either.
I use nature to try to dim my own human scents, rub dirt on it and other simple things.
I start out from camp in full darkness using a shaded colored light source.
My camp is a long way from the stand.

I know scent killer and dead downwind are decent scent covers because I have sat with a south breeze blowing into the trees and the deer still can't find me.
And yes, I learned about the six step method. Watch deer walk, they do this too.
Best of all is when you have a blanket of soft snow to muffle your footsteps.

Interesting. Thanks for the share 😀

Nice advice! Good hunting
Nice! Thanks for the insight!

That sucks really bad! So try targeting lower wind days and then play the thermals to your advantage
All good advise that I use.

Deer always look down wind for predators so approaching from down wind isn't always best I have found personally

Stepping on a stick night be a dead give away, but six steps in crunchy leaves spooked him out before that !
Squirrels, raccoons, turkeys, and other forest critters walk in the leaves. By taking your time, you're mimicking some non threatening forest critter.
Idk it might mistake you for a squirrel. If the wind is right.

I dont pay any attention to wind direction or speed. Never get busted. Shot a nice 10pt one year in 50+ mph gusts.
I still hunt its the only way I can hunt after my back injury so I take my time. Sometimes I'll lightly slid my step and try to sound like a armadillo works pretty good. I've copied the sounds of other animals to and it seems to work more times than not. I also use the wind not only in my face but also the sound of a gust of wind with leaves falling creates a bunch of noise that I'd timed right will cover some of your sound from steps. when I go in in the afternoon I move along slowly and I'll kick the leaves around a little bit and I carry a turkey call and I just make easy calls and purrs and try to sound like turkeys walking. and there are times I'll make sounds like a deer. easy contact calls and bleats. some people say you could attract deer to you when you use a deer call and that might not be a good thing if you're just trying to get to a stand. well I'd rather sound like a deer and take that chance then sound like a human and have no chance. and when I am rifle hunting having deer come to me is what my object is anyway. but the most important thing is having the wind in your face. if you don't have the wind in your face you could float in mid-air and your deer will still leave the area if it gets any whiff of human scent. it's important to try not to spook other game that would tip deer off to danger in the woods.
