He’s a nice likeable bloke who not only admits when he’s wrong and is guessing a lot of the time but he mixes it with stories, humour and stays humble throughout his journey. It hasn’t gone to his head.
This has to be the first TH-cam Strategy video I've seen for the automotive youtubers, I can tell you as a small channel this information is pure PURE gold!

I clicked on this video for no other reason than it was about Mat Armstrong. I like watching his videos and will always watch them on my TV rather than my phone (like I'm watching your video now). Mat is a genuine guy. There are no airs, graces, 😊or bullshit with him. I have learnt a bit about cars from watching him, enough to never wanting to buy a supercar without winning lotto to have the funds behind me in case things go wrong. Incidentally, the fact that you plastered a picture of Mat on the video promo should make this, for you, your most popular video. That's the power of Mat.
I stumbled across his videos earlier this year, watched him rebuild a Ferrari I think, and thought “yes great vid, but just another rich kid playing with super cars”. I researched him a bit and watched his Ben Fowler Road to Success interview. Totally changed my opinion of him, and respect the hard work, risk and vision to get to this point. The fact he was building a rental property portfolio while working a normal job shows he was trying his best to succeed. The Hard Work Beats Talent tees sum it up. BTW I’m a 58 year old retired engineering business owner, not a 20 something you’d assume his target viewer would be. Thanks for the great explanation of how TH-cam works, and how he’s cracked it. And hence I’m now a subscriber to you too. 😊
I found Mat about 2 years ago when he was starting out and I've been hooked since. The thing about him is that he's got a great personality and while he does work on cars, he throws himself into the video and doesn't just make the video about the car but also makes it personal by how he reacts to how things are going, whether good or bad and it makes the content more interesting to watch. His videos are the only ones I watch as soon as I get a notification that he posted something new and it's always something that keeps me glued to the screen from beginning to end. His dad, Hanna and the rest of his crew just work perfectly with him, with special appearances from Kevin make the videos just awesome. All my buddies who are into cars and some that aren't, that I've shared Mat's channel with, have all become fans and they all share the same sentiments. I wish him nothing but success but i don't think he needs it since he seems to be doing just fine.
Mat is relatable, gets projects done!.. (instead of lingering on with 20 filler videos about ice blasting or other boring content). And watching him work with his dad Tony just adds another layer of enjoyment.
Mat's channel is so refreshing. He seems very genuine and the interactions with his dad are amazing. There's no clickbait. He's humble. He acts his age. Sky is the limit.

People like to hang with happy, positive, passionate people who get things done. Matt is all of that. He is always like a kid opening his first present on Christmas morning. Subconsciously people think that attitude is going to rub off of them eventually. I just found Matt last week and was captivated by his personality. That he could become successful enough to give his father a Ferrari 360 just sealed the deal. How proud both he and his father must be every day.
We always talk about Mat’s ad reads, how he positions it means you cannot skip it without missing out on a portion of his content, ad reads can be very creatively done delivering for the brand whilst entertaining your viewers 👍
Mat Armstrong has an incredible talent for storytelling. He doesn’t rely on strategies or constructed narratives; he simply knows how to tell a story and feels every part of the work. On top of that, he’s a hardworking guy who started out on the streets, then moved to working in his own garage, which eventually brought him massive success. His journey shows how difficult it is for others to replicate this kind of approach. To have his mindset and skill, you truly need to be born with it. It’s great to see how his hard work paid off and led to such success, especially now that his dad has joined him in the car repair business. It’s clear that this has made life even better for both of them.
The best analysis information about TH-cam Growing and how exact it is for Matt Armstrong. Point to point you explain everything. I agree with this 100%.
It’s because the content is straight to the point and the car is usually completed in less than 5 parts. No beating around the bush. Get the car, tell the story of it, cut the damage out, get the new parts and for them final video is the drive.
Being a automotive TH-camr I have watched hundreds of how to grow your channel videos, this has got to be the best video I’ve seen, instant subscription and I will come back and let you know how much of a difference this Video has made over the next few weeks👌👌
He’s such an easy and positive guy to watch. He admits and shares mistakes, and still shows professionalism in his finished product. His friends and family help make a great show. We’re hooked.
As a big fan, it's not just techniques, strategy or content. He's also seems to be a genuinely nice person (as well as his crew), you never for a moment have a feeling of negativity even when things go wrong. Also congrats on this video, seems like youtube algorithm gods picked up on it 📈good job
I am not a patrol head or real car lover. But I discovered his channel months ago ago. I watched a lot of videos. It’s just relaxing to watch. He really makes a fun show of it even for people who aren’t really into cars. But explaining the technology and how he fixes things. Just awesome.
The 'Mat Armstrong' effect working as intended, the guy is taking over the automotive TH-cam scene. This is clearly a new adventure for you being this is only your 4th video with probably a total viewing figure of around 1,000 between the 3 others combined and by simply using Mats thumbnail and using his name in this video its already managed to accumulate over 70,000 views. Madness, madness! Big Armstrong fan here so no hate thrown and ofcourse best of luck on the adventure!
He’s a brand in his own right now, everything’s branded MA. It’s also why this video has done so well, people are just attracted to ‘Mat Armstrong’ in the title, I enjoyed this video too, you should do more of them for the big TH-camrs
I have to say - as a small channel ourselves trying to do the same thing as Matt one day, this video gave us so many useful insights into what can be improved. Thanks!
FINALLY someone else has spotted how Mat is doing his ad reads. I cut my teeth working as an editor in London for a variety of TV productions and have to say, his is the most well-thought out, intelligent approach I've seen on TH-cam in this respect. It's not at all easy though; it requires planning ahead and additional time in the edit, not just once, but every single time you do a placement. Add in the pressure to churn out weekly content for the algorithm and it's understandable why most car channels (most channels in general, actually) bang in a pre-recorded reel. The results speak for themselves, though. I'm a big fan of AutoAlex and the TDC boys, but the minute you see that cut away you know what's coming, the fast forward button gets pressed and their engagement metrics drop off. There's only one loser, two if you include the advertiser. If I were running a channel and doing ad reads, above all else, I would prioritise this approach. It's night and day. Easy for me to say though, I don't run a channel 😆, but take it from an old-school editor, this strategy right here is the difference between good and great. Side note: aside from the additional work involved, another reason I *personally* don't think this approach is more prevalent (yet) is because TH-cam is an American platform. The US is far more accustomed to 30 second ad spots dropped into TV shows which has informed how many US-based creators approach their ad reads. I think international creators have simply taken their cues from everyone that's gone before them in this respect. Becoming great requires thinking out of the box.
@@MadeByBishop i don't know if you are familiar with the Map Men channel on TH-cam (I imagine most reading this are not) but they take a different approach to ads which keeps you watching. Their channel is a humourous look at the history of maps. What they do is have an ad drop but turn it into a funny sketch which kind of keeps things flowing & watchable.
@@madpixie2 No self respecting TH-cam viewer doesn't know Map Men 😄 Yeah, their stuff is so well done, the ad reads are literally part of the script - but those guys only put out videos once every couple of months (if that!) and probably spend a huge amount of time on the script. Peter McKinnon used to do something similar with his Squarespace guy alter ego too. Side note who knew Jay Foreman from Map Men was Beardyman's brother?!
I don’t do this to a lot of video but I watched his entire 45-minute video without skipping or fast-forwarding, which really shows how captivating his content is.😂
matts structure for the videos are really well done, while the overall format is the same, he manages to make each rebuild different, and have a different story. but the most important thing is that he is so very relatable, and the people hes working with (especially his dad) really connects with the audience, just skim through the comments and you can see its what people are drawn two... I still think it is incredible that he edits all the footage himself, that alone is a mammoth amount of work, but hes also doing all the actual work too, I do hope he transitions to a more sustainable rate of videos because so many youtubers burn out and it'd be a real shame. great video Callum, now back to the lawn mower racing :D
Two things about MA, he finishes what he started and his Dad’s ebullient personality that MA shares. There are a number of other car channels I no longer follow because they lack what Mat has.
Great analysis, but I think you forgot the most important point, and that is the person Mat. His way of telling the stories, sympathetic and autentic makes also a big different.
Absolutely true! He's incredible. Just, most creators have that factor - who they are. I was trying to focus on the elements of his strategy that someone could borrow for their channel.
Okay - a response is required, as you have missed the critical issue which keeps people watching, and no amount of over-analysis will overcome this. My concern, as someone who does not produce content, is that viewers don't get the impression that if they follow Matt's "system" that they will get success. And I say this advisedly as a TV producer myself. NONE of this would count for anything if Matt wasn't a natural and gifted performer and presenter. Its really THAT simple. He is enormously watchable; animated, personable, human, engaging. Without that core quality, the rest of the "system" from programme structure, hooks, thumbnails, links and the rest would count for nothing. There are plenty of other TH-camrs who have the same formula and it doesn't work BECAUSE THE CAMERA DOESN'T LOVE THEM.
So what you’re really saying is you need emotive connectivity with your views which you only get from being authentic. However the rest can be taught and learned… it’s really no different to any kind of presenting you don’t need to be a TV producer to know this stuff.
You say this. But then you only need to look at Mr Beast. The biggest TH-camr in the world. Who isn't the slightest bit charismatic or likable and comes a across as very disingenuous. Yet his system has problem very popular Im not taking anything away from Matt, I love his videos i watch them all but a system really does help. Personally I like how enthusiastic he is and how good he is at explaining everything so even I can understand it
I also think the pace of his delivery / speech is a factor. Some TH-cam content creators I find have to be sped up to 1.25x or 1.5x as it feels so dlow. Mat and his team get the pacing right and never let things stall or go too slowly.
I legit started watching when he got the rolls cuz I’m a huge fan of rolls Royce and seeing someone rebuild it is incredible! Loved how it ended up! Looking forward to his lambo urus build and more in the future! 🔥
Honestly, I enjoy watching his videos because he posts the full restoration on his second channel. A lot of time when I watched a restoration on other channels they start to restore then the next video is a vlog or is something not what I wanted to watch… so I just give up on following on. But when he posts the 1hr or 2 hr videos I enjoyed cause I watch the whole thing while I’m working on something else.
I’m a Mat Armstrong fan from Jamaica 🇯🇲 and I can definitely relate to what you’re saying…Mat’s videos are like an addition. I wait for them like all the time. I always admire the way in which he structure his content, from his story lines, the music in the background, connecting with fans and also how he puts a smile on everyone’s faces throughout his videos. But your content gives us a more in depth feel of Mat’s studio time which is much appreciated bro…very informative video…well deserved LIKE and SUBSCRIBE…and I’m definitely going to incorporate this into my videos. Cheers mate
As a new creator in the automotive TH-cam space who has just posted my first video, this information is fantastic! I’ll definitely be using it to help me improve my next video, great work, Callum!
Ive been subscibed since the beginning of the channel and the moment i saw the video of the audi Q5 i knew he was going to get big but this big in this little time is insane. Props to him 🤝🏻
Of all the 'How to TH-cam' video's I've watched ... this has been most valuable for me. Given that I am trying to build a car based TH-cam channel, I've fallen at first hurdle using the 'Part X' and for next video's/car I will use the recap method for sure. It makes a LOT more sense.
That's really great to hear! If you ever want to chat about your channel, there is a free 20 minute call on my website. I'd be interested to hear how things are going. Glad you liked the video!
Thumbnails need work! I’d also look at doing some mini maintenance videos they will get you some subscribers maybe even a used buyers guide as older mini’s are most drivers first car!
@@sprocket-YT Thank you! Thank you so much. Agree on thumbnails for sure. I am planning to do buyers guide and some maintenance videos/how-tos. This first car was my testing the water car .. a do I like the minis (yes, yes I do :D), b how do I feel being on camera etc (yeah am getting there), what tools/suppliers do I need (got some of those now). Now I've done those, definitely plan on doing more focused/in-depth videos alongside the 'story of this particular mini'
Good explanation! lets not forget Matt, Liam, his dad and everybody else are very likeable people, it is almost watching a soap, really good. I always look forward to his next project !
Most start with project but they take way to long fixing it and people move on, the Mansory Rolls took a long time for specific reasons but with every other project they keep the momentum so it's also simply hard work every day
Also, unlike some youtubers, he's not just some posh kid who had family money to burn in the first place. There's an element of 'I could do this' for the normal person and also a sense that he really deserves it.
Also his dad is a secret weapon both in terms of car knowledge and making the channel more fun. Early on his dad refused to be on camera. Since his dad has been on camera the channel has skyrocketed.
Its nice to watch as they won’t have 37 , 30 minutes clips like some other youtubers. All footage is nice compressed, i never skip forward with math, what i do with a lot of other channels who are just filling time
This was a brilliant video, thank you so much for the clarity and insight. There is one major component that you have missed and that is Matt Armstrong. The Matt Armstrong effect with his enthusiasm his personal ability his can-do attitude his ability to deal with setbacks And his sense of humour add phenomenally to the attractiveness of this video. You could get an individual who would repeat the stages you have outlined but without the quality that his personality brings and it probably would not do so well don’t forget the Matt Armstrong effect!
What a great breakdown of Mat's channel! I think i subconsciously knew why it was good but as I'm not a content creator, had never analysed it. I will pretty much watch any of Mat's videos on either of his channels whether i like the car or not, it's only really the full builds i skip as i have already seen that content as he was doing it.
Lots of people only resonate car rebuilds with Mat but they dont realise he isnt the first car rebuilder, there were many before him including tj hunt. Many people are trying to follow in Mats footsteps but dont realise that its his video style
One word …. Personally!!! Secondly how it’s edited! Thirdly…. a sound geezer looking like he hasn’t got a clue but actually ‘Winging it’ and in doing so connecting with millions of people around the world on the same level!!! The format is … ‘I am an every day bloke who knows nothing’ If I can achieve this then so can you mentally…..! Hat off to Matt for this!!! And I am happy for his success as I have been a sub from the beginning!! Basically…. ‘Power to the people’! Yes there are a lot of very crucial points you made!!! Matt is a You tube Guru…. He could be making videos of his next nail clippings/nails and still made a killing….! MA knows his arena !!!
I find the way Matt constantly stupidly screwing things up most frustrating then suddenly realise I’ve spent an hour watching the program. He crafts the same emotional roller coaster you see in an Indiana Jones movie…. Genius‼️
I found this fascinating and learnt a lot from you. Been on the platform 7 years but my channel grows really slowly and it’s all most likely down to the first 30 seconds, the niche I’m in and a lack of a hook. I love what Matt does and have often thought what I could use but you have now told me all I need to know. How I implement it is another thing … Watchmaking is not as exciting but fascinating all the same. I can only dream of £5 per 1000 😂 and all my videos are long form 1 hour usually. Thank you for this clear insight and I’ve subbed as a result!
I'm a big fan of watches and watchmaking, so will drop a sub. One thing: never blame the niche. Often the more unusual niches are ripe for opportunity, just got to figure out the best way to implement the setup, discovery, then payoff.
@@CallumTH-camStrategy thanks for your reply Calum. I’ve watched all your videos now and pleased it did! Your niche could be breaking down channels strategies given the Matt Armstrong video has done so well. When I stated over 7 years ago there was only one other watch repair channel, today there are 100s and many came after me and are much larger despite creating pretty much the same content. It’s weird how it works . Some of it I know why, I am more real and show all the mistakes and difficulties that arise which tends to only appeal to other people in the hobby. The biggest channels appeal to a wider audience by showing a start to finish restoration all polished and without the reality of how hard it is to do. I accept I am where I am and please with 80k subs but the target personally is 100k at which point I can call myself a TH-camr! (Vanity I know) I am producing a video on a tuning fork watch and as a result of your videos I am now re filming an intro hopefully with a good enough hook! I will need to watch your content again now with a pen and paper to bullet some of your ideas. Thank you and wish you success here.
Hadn't even noticed the brightly coloured clothes in the thumbnails - Mat always wears black, he's clearly just throwing on a hoodie specifically for the thumbnail. He's also said all his videos get voice-overed into Spanish by another company and published in Latin America, so his video revenue is probably double the calculations shown here. 💰 Smart and very likeable guy.
As a small automotive youtuber with 131 subs, this was great advice. I have a lot to work on, started it as a passion project, but enjoying it a lot more than i thought i would, really struggling with thumbnails as not everyone can have milestones every upload ahahaThanks, callum. you know Matt is doing well when a random breakdown of his strategy video pops up!!! great breakdown, excellent choice to piggyback on his success :) cant beleve you only have 800 subs its a very well presented breakdown consider me subbed
I love that you've used Matt Armstrongs strategy in your video. Some great points. I'll try to use as and when I remember them (Screenshot a couple too) Thank you, a new Sub too 👍 Jamie
as a automotive videographer this is the first time i see another youtuber breaks down a automotive video haha im here trying to post on how to take car videos i stick around for sure nice video mate
Great video Callum. Brilliant breakdown analysis that you roll back up into simple take aways capped off with an engaging presentation style. Happy to sub.😊

Very well said
@@MadeByBishop i don't know if you are familiar with the Map Men channel on TH-cam (I imagine most reading this are not) but they take a different approach to ads which keeps you watching.
Their channel is a humourous look at the history of maps. What they do is have an ad drop but turn it into a funny sketch which kind of keeps things flowing & watchable.
@@madpixie2 No self respecting TH-cam viewer doesn't know Map Men 😄
Yeah, their stuff is so well done, the ad reads are literally part of the script - but those guys only put out videos once every couple of months (if that!) and probably spend a huge amount of time on the script. Peter McKinnon used to do something similar with his Squarespace guy alter ego too.
Side note who knew Jay Foreman from Map Men was Beardyman's brother?!
@@MadeByBishop I didn't know about Jay & Beardyman until fairly recently but it seems pretty obvious once you know, doesn't it?
The perfect character mix and likeability of this channel is also trough the roof.
To be honest he is good to watch and his storytelling is good
Okay - a response is required, as you have missed the critical issue which keeps people watching, and no amount of over-analysis will overcome this.
Exactly. I hate cars. have never owned one and don't want to - and Mat is unmissable. His team is fantastic and full of humour.
So what you’re really saying is you need emotive connectivity with your views which you only get from being authentic. However the rest can be taught and learned… it’s really no different to any kind of presenting you don’t need to be a TV producer to know this stuff.
Agreed, this stuff is good for 10k views. This AND what isn’t explained in this video = 6 million views per video.
You say this. But then you only need to look at Mr Beast. The biggest TH-camr in the world. Who isn't the slightest bit charismatic or likable and comes a across as very disingenuous. Yet his system has problem very popular
Im not taking anything away from Matt, I love his videos i watch them all but a system really does help.
Personally I like how enthusiastic he is and how good he is at explaining everything so even I can understand it
Great to see you on TH-cam again Callum!
Great to BE back!
I’ve been watching Mat since he had 10k views and even from back then you knew his channel was going to explode
Don’t forget his Dad. His inclusion as the channel exploded has added so much more joy.
I also think the pace of his delivery / speech is a factor. Some TH-cam content creators I find have to be sped up to 1.25x or 1.5x as it feels so dlow.
Mat and his team get the pacing right and never let things stall or go too slowly.
I love that YOU used all these principles in your video, well done
Hands down the best strategy breakdown I’ve seen on the platform, thank you for this content 🙂
Only 760 views and 59 subscribers😮..... this has to be one ot the most underrated videos on TH-cam. Brilliant content. It's an instant subscribe 👍🏼
Thanks so much, I appreciate that!
422. To 428 by the time I finish the video
And now 185k views and 1.36k subscribers! Maybe its time one of us review Callum too!😂
And now 263k
You dominated my attention for 14 minutes. Well done Callum
Now I've done those, definitely plan on doing more focused/in-depth videos alongside the 'story of this particular mini'
good to see that this video is working well for your own channel aswell. You've put alot of work into it and it's appreciated. Well done!
Can you do a video about stradman strategy, I think it would also perform great ❤
Good explanation! lets not forget Matt, Liam, his dad and everybody else are very likeable people, it is almost watching a soap, really good. I always look forward to his next project !
Great video Callum 👊
Most start with project but they take way to long fixing it and people move on, the Mansory Rolls took a long time for specific reasons but with every other project they keep the momentum so it's also simply hard work every day
It’s funny cos this is what mechanics usually do in their spare time, he just was genius enough to document it 👏
Also, unlike some youtubers, he's not just some posh kid who had family money to burn in the first place. There's an element of 'I could do this' for the normal person and also a sense that he really deserves it.
Also his dad is a secret weapon both in terms of car knowledge and making the channel more fun. Early on his dad refused to be on camera. Since his dad has been on camera the channel has skyrocketed.
As someone who started very recently on TH-cam with an automotive channel, this is awesome 👌 thank you!
Mat's a very talented storyteller and video editor. as good as anything you see on tv.
Its nice to watch as they won’t have 37 , 30 minutes clips like some other youtubers. All footage is nice compressed, i never skip forward with math, what i do with a lot of other channels who are just filling time
Great video and tips. Thank you 🙏
This was a brilliant video, thank you so much for the clarity and insight.
He’s obviously very clever and extremely hard working. His show is great, how he makes all the content and edits himself is amazing…
Wonderfully done…. Great points and breakdown of Mat’s videos. You can tell how hard you worked to create this video. Love it Bravo Sir 👏 Bravo 👏
I love your channel sir! Awesome you found this!
Wow. Thanks! That was interesting!!!❤
Wow amazing video 🎉
Thank you for spending the time and making this amazing video.❤
What a great breakdown of Mat's channel! I think i subconsciously knew why it was good but as I'm not a content creator, had never analysed it.
I will pretty much watch any of Mat's videos on either of his channels whether i like the car or not, it's only really the full builds i skip as i have already seen that content as he was doing it.
Just suggesting that it might have a little bit to do with his Charisma !
Lots of people only resonate car rebuilds with Mat but they dont realise he isnt the first car rebuilder, there were many before him including tj hunt. Many people are trying to follow in Mats footsteps but dont realise that its his video style
Mat has taken over TH-cam!!
Look whos back happy to see you with your own channel Callum
What Mat does well is makes us feel like he's a regular guy like us, and that if he can do it, so can we.
One word …. Personally!!!
Secondly how it’s edited!
Thirdly…. a sound geezer looking like he hasn’t got a clue but actually ‘Winging it’ and in doing so connecting with millions of people around the world on the same level!!!
The format is …
‘I am an every day bloke who knows nothing’
If I can achieve this then so can you mentally…..!
Ur the bloke from Overdrive, fkn hell was a mission to remember from where i recognize your face
Well remembered!
fantastic study !
I find the way Matt constantly stupidly screwing things up most frustrating then suddenly realise I’ve spent an hour watching the program. He crafts the same emotional roller coaster you see in an Indiana Jones movie…. Genius‼️
You know a video is good when you have to take notes
I found this fascinating and learnt a lot from you.
Been on the platform 7 years but my channel grows really slowly and it’s all most likely down to the first 30 seconds, the niche I’m in and a lack of a hook.
I love what Matt does and have often thought what I could use but you have now told me all I need to know. How I implement it is another thing …
Watchmaking is not as exciting but fascinating all the same.
Could be photocopying them tbf
As a small automotive youtuber with 131 subs, this was great advice. I have a lot to work on, started it as a passion project, but enjoying it a lot more than i thought i would, really struggling with thumbnails as not everyone can have milestones every upload ahahaThanks, callum.
I'll sign up toyour newsletter ❤
im here cuz of mat, but i watched till the end cuz im also interested in the breakdown of strategy. thanks
I'm not a car person but i watch every video, they're all just really likeable characters
That's a testament to the quality, if ANYONE can watch and enjoy your content!
Don’t forget his collaborations. When he did the Porsche rebuild with Tavarish his US audience pumped up his channel by almost a million subscribers.
but unfortunately tavarish was stop in time and matt beat him by far so far
Great video! Your explanation applies to all story telling as a whole, not just vlogs as we see here.👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
you know Matt is doing well when a random breakdown of his strategy video pops up!!! great breakdown, excellent choice to piggyback on his success :) cant beleve you only have 800 subs its a very well presented breakdown consider me subbed
Great video, super insightful. Before i watched i was a MA fan, now i'm a CM fan 👏
Thanks so much, just checked out your channel - looks awesome. I'm a big fan of travel content, will subscribe!
Really good strategy breakdown. Unfortunately I really dislike Mat’s videos, just because of this style.
Matt's videos are ace - but this breakdown is sensational! You got a new sub!
Exactly what I wanted to see! Well done
great video! lots of awesome points
I love that you've used Matt Armstrongs strategy in your video. Some great points. I'll try to use as and when I remember them (Screenshot a couple too)
Thank you, a new Sub too 👍
Jamie
as a automotive videographer this is the first time i see another youtuber breaks down a automotive video haha im here trying to post on how to take car videos i stick around for sure nice video mate
Great video Callum. Brilliant breakdown analysis that you roll back up into simple take aways capped off with an engaging presentation style. Happy to sub.😊
