    I put some mollies in my 500 gallon backyard pond and they have multiplied like crazy. A great HS biology experiment as Ive got some with blue tails and others with yellow heads now.

    Wow this in such a coincidence I bought a group of 5 platys the other day and was looking for a video about them from you and didn’t see any. So that’s perfect timing! Thanks 😀

    Thanks for posting this 😊
    I’ve had my “big” aquarium for over a year, and I’m currently cycling a smaller second tank for breeding/quarantine depending. I had guppies and then suddenly 30+ babies over 6 months ago, and even with hungry swordtails in the mix I still have about 10 living to adulthood.
    I love keeping my fish, and learning how to keep them healthy and happy. Love your channel 👍

    The ovaries of fish are called gonads, which are a pair of internal organs located near the middle of the body, next to the stomach. The ovaries are saccular and paired, but can sometimes be fused.

    Nice work. People often overlook breeding the more common fish, but they are lovely. My angels are on day 6 of a spawn, expecting the fry to be free swimming tomorrow. It is great fun getting back to basics after doing some more complicated and sometimes heartbraking and mind bending stuff.

    I have a male that selected a particular female and guards her from rivals, so they have the appearance of a bonded pair. But he also doesn’t constantly harass her like many male live bearers seem to do with females.

    I know you're the expert, but some sinking plants are good for them to hide initially. They sometimes sink and sit defenselessly. I do respect the survival of the fittest thing, though. Thanks for sharing this!

    I like the way you pronounce platty, not the way we do in the UK. You also keep them very differently than I do. Mine are in an unheated tank that has a temperature range between 14°C and 20°C.they breed like crazy. My fish are also much bigger, the females up to 4 inches and the males are between 1 and 1•5 inches, I use large clumps of Java moss for the babies to hide in. The only problem is what to do with the babies!

    • @tonycamplin8607
      @tonycamplin8607 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @nat-xs2fs I honestly don't know they're just variegated patties, orange and black in colour, similar to the ones in the video.

      I think they are called patties pla-tees in the UK. They do well in tanks around 21-23 aswell for variatus

    Hi Nick! Platies are my childhood fish and its been a while since I kept and bred them too. I wonder is it true that livebearer nowadays are less robust due to over/inbreeding.. and what can we do about it

    Some platy "species" are a bit tricky to breed but the more common "varieties" you can buy are often already pregnant and giving birth in the store, you might already see BBs but generaly the others eat them as the tanks in stores can be bare of hiding places. You should see fat females with a square bellies for sale along with males anyway. I think live foods are easier safer and better than any prepared or crushed dry live foods. Finely crushed flakes are the best alternative to live, just a small pinch a day. If your store carries live daphnia (the better ones do) buy them and put in a squirt or two from a turkey baster, these will breed in the tank and stay alive indefinately not fouling the water, the new fry will eat the tiny new born daphnia the adults the larger adult daphnia. A few large snails are always a good idea in the begining as they produce compost which produces infuriosa (microscopic tiny live food) which new fry also love. Newly hatched brine shrimp are fantastic the only ones to use are fresh hatched as these have the highest protein so best to hatch yourself rather than buy already hatched which will have spent half a day in the bag at least which substantial lowers their nutritional value. Only problem is unlike daphnia they die pretty soon in fresh water fouling things up. With this all going on you have to watch your tank doesn't crash and turn milky and stunt or even kill all your BBs so a system of water changes/filtration is practicaly unavoidable. If you just want a few BBs just feed the adults as usual, daphina are excellent at getting them to put on condition and give birth, one or to babies will always survive in a well planted tank. OR catch the pregnant females and place in a trap placed in another tank so all the BBs fall out the bottom safely and rear them seperately.

    My first attempt at a tropical fresh water community tank, I got guppies because I thought it would be cool to have baby fish and 2 platies and a few neon's for since bright colors, never had a baby guppy even though I did have 2 females and 2 males, nobody ever told me about platies breeding ended up with 3 tanks and gave babies away to friends and relatives.

    Great stuff as always, Nick! I've got some Mickey Mouse Platys. I guess I can thank Adrian for that one. 🙂 Oh my! They breed like cockroaches. I feel like even the juveniles are spawning. I'm seeing really tiny fry in a tank where I finally removed the adults just because it was getting so crowded. Anyway, keep 'em coming. Thanks and cheers! ~Ron

    Well, it's not so easy. They grow pretty slow, comparing to other livebearers. Also, they are not so prolific and give birth to just a few younglings. They grow unevenly, and at the end, (often) they are smaller than parents.

    I don’t think them eating their babies has to do with a lack of intelligence, since livebearers such as mosquito fish and guppies have been studied it was found they can do very simple arithmetic. I mainly has to do with captive breeding imo. Since in the wild bad parents can’t spread their genes but this is eliminated in captivity. Endler not eating their offspring very frequently further supports my theory.
