Thats what I have been saying for years that dubs vas are serously good and the only think holding dubs back is purely when they have native japanese speakers try to write english lines that sound natural and arw for characters they aint voicing. Literally they just need to get as direct translations as possible, hire native English speaking VAs with the right dialect and general peraonality of the character you want them to voice and than let them paraphrase those direct translations omhow they thing their charactwr would sayit

I used to do translation and as a bilingual speaker of two languages I worked with native speakers to do the translations into English. I’d rewrite the translation so that the emotion, tone, and meaning of the translation would sound natural in English. On the most basic level even with subs this is what translators are doing, nothing is ever really translated directly word for word, so even if something is subbed it’s not always literally what was said in the source language. I’ve been enjoying dubs for a long time, it’s just a different way to get that same translation experience. Unless you’re learning Japanese or a Japanese native speaker, you’re not experiencing the language any more “accurately” that you are watching dubs. Obviously some localization is a complete rewrite (for example Ghost Stories), so with the exception of special cases like that, most localization tries to be as close to the source material as possible, BUT in case where there is humor or hard to translate concepts the translator always takes some liberties (this is also standard translation practice) - doesn’t matter if it is dub or sub.
It does add a lot of neat factors to his character to have knowledge of a Kaiju's inner workings from his cleanup duty days, and adding in his being able to become a thinking humanoid Kaiju with incredible strength is also another neat factor to Kafka.

This was only one of two series where I read the manga before the anime came out, so safe to say I was looking forward to this. So, for, the anime to not only be THIS good, but also have the dub release the same time as the sub (minus the last two episodes), was an awesome surprise.
it's such an odd thing to focus on but the drone guy saying "aaarigato" is such a fun little touch to me. sometimes that aspect of "this is happening in Japan" gets lost when listening to an English dub, and you practically NEVER hear people use a Japanese word unless it's a name of a person, place, food or something like "mahou". it surprised me on the first watch but it was pretty much what sold the dub for me. and it forreal did not disappoint
i can’t think of too many examples. but the persona games use Japanese respect names. they’ll refer to eachother as -san -chan -senpai etc even in english. but now you say it i cant think of any anime examples. they keep Japanese names/words in manga though.

Modern anime tends to put me off when they're way too strict with the translation since it leaves everyone sounding really stilted and awkward, but this actually sounds like how people talk! I'm loving this. Read the manga as just a dark monster story with nothing comical. Especially since it's much more detailed and gory in it's art. Especially later with the situation only getting worse while their position only gets worse. Glad it gets more comical.
