    6:14 The floaty jump actually only resembles Super Ghouls n Ghosts. In every other game he jumps super heavy so it’s quite strange.

    When MvCI came out I absolutely fell in love with the game. I really wish it got more support. Was really thinking about getting it on Steam and getting back into it but I can't imagine there being a big enough scene online to take it seriously.

    This man has now done the impossible task of somehow making me pick up two games I originally thought were bad because other people said so (MvCi and SFxT) .

      People bash sfxt but it’s gameplay is way better than just regular 1vs1 SF games
      I’ve never been able to play regular SF games… it always just feels so bland after sfxt which is more like eating a food flavorful spices

    I love these mechanics and always thought it'd be interesting to see this combination in a more traditional fighting game. Pretty funny seeing Arthur doing Falco's SHL pressure.

      @@eliasnicolasmiranda4940 Yeah, Sakurai definitely took inspiration from SNK games for Smash. Short hops, running, (guard cancel) rolls. Even the KO system might be inspired by "out of bound" in Real Bout Fatal Fury.
      It's really interesting to see the evolution of fighting game mechanics.

      movement was always the future of fighting games, you can say that Smash is the endpoint of that philosophy and everything else will eventually catch up in their own way.

      ​​@@simongotborg3866 But smash plays nothing like KoF or a traditional fighter and is better for it.
      You're also horribly stretching by mentioning guard cancels, probably inspired by that awful "landing a hit smash vs FGC" video. Guard cancels cancel blockstun at the cost of meter, rolls and jumps OoS are just options you do out of shield ONCE BLOCKSTUN FINISHES, it's not a cancel of blockstun, it's a completely different thing.
      The similarities between ring outs and smash's KO system are also very superficial. The whole game of smash is build around it, with increasing percent changing combo's and what moves are kill moves, edgeguarding, recoveries, ledge mechanics. None of these things are essential to the concept of ring outs but they are fundamental to smash's KO system.
      Smash isn't an evolution of fighting games, it's a revolution. A completely new way of approaching the genre. Which is why there is little to no skill translation between smash and traditional fighters

    I definitely agree about Arthur in MvCI benefiting a lot from short hop and subsequently the double jump cancels from air-OK projectiles. I do think some of the system mechanics like reflect and being able to destroy most of his normal projectiles are the other side of that double edged sword but that's irrelevant to the topic at hand. It's definitely the biggest upgrade he got going from 3 to Infinite in exchange for losing some pretty vital tools like the invincible slash and consistent overhead properties on the jS.

    Alright, you sold me on Arthur's zoning in MVCI. I love platforms and platfighter. I also love oppressing others with projectile mix.
    Short hop extensions and drift do be giving me melee vibes. 🤔

    I hope that Capcom will be willing to make a new MvC. If they do, I'd like to see them make essentially a better version of MvCI, with many of the same mechanics but with more fan favorite characters, a better artstyle and better voice acting.

      Not likely. It's not on Marvel to make the decision anymore. Since Disney got involved, they cannot do anything with the IP unless they say so. It's the same reason why there were no mutants in MVCI and so on. It's sad, but unless Marvel is able to stand on It's own and make a product by itself as a company, which it can't anymore, we're not getting anything new

If Marvel's not willing to make a new MvC, then I at least hope that Capcom can make a crossover fighting game with their own characters, like a better version of Capcom Fighting Jam. Though I have a feeling that might also be very unlikely. At least it's slightly more likely than a new MvC.

    MVCI was my main game for a long while. I got it on release day and I had such a blast with the roster. Then, when Winter Soldier came out, I discovered my favorite versus character of all time!
    Watching matches of this game especially nowadays just gets me itching to throw it on and mess around with teams and stones again.

    I shit you not when I say I didn't even know this mechanic even existed till now and it looks like an incredibly intresting option which I am definetly going to use now that I know of its existence (yes i still play this game from time to time). This adds to the pile of reasons as to why Mvci is my favourite Marvel game to play.

      Most anime fighters have ways to alter your jump momentum too. Most of em use double jumps and airdashes, and some like Melty Blood do let you have a bit of an aerial drift too. That dedicated landing spot thing is mostly just in 1v1 Capcom titles and NRS titles lmao

    MvCI was an awesome game, mechanically speaking. If Capcom hadn't dropped the ball so hard in terms of marketing, visual design, etc, it could have been a huge success.

      If marvel 2-3 didn’t exist sure it’s pretty aight but it’s a direct downgrade from previous entries so much so that marvel 3 is still be played competitively

      @@kobunzthat’s such a weird take. That’s like saying SFIV is bad because people still play Third Strike or Alpha. You could also literally say the same about MVC3 because it has its own detriments to gameplay like X Factor or game defining characters like Dark Phoenix, Zero and etc.

      If you like it play it and have a blast
      But saying the game “died cause of Disney/capcom” is just ridiculous the core gameplay loop is whack Once you learn the limitations of the gameplay mechanics
      People figured that out in droves after release sorry you missed the wave
      When a game is brand new information is passed around exponentially faster than when it’s aged
      When the initial wave of players leave a bad game a huge swath of information goes with it. Game was super fun for like a month and then shit got optimized and the shallow nature of the game started to show
      The balance patch was cool and fresh but the same core problems remained and anyone who wanted to play competitive fighting games moved on
      Now we are half a decade in and the people who trickle in are staying in the month one phase longer as they don’t have the player pool to bounce ideas off of to optimize and stay at the relatively low level that is indeed very fun

    I love MvCI. My main gripe was the low-contrast aesthetic presentation that made it hard for me to see what was happening on the screen.

    I would like to add that MvCI did a great job of finally balancing high mobility characters, cause other than moving a lot they just don't do much for your team. Unpopular opinion maybe, but they're just really good if you pair them with great support characters like hawkeye or winter soldier. They shoot you from full screen then you tag and use the projectile to go in. Really simple but a tried and true meta gameplan. You pair nova and captain marvel, both with fantastic mobility but really poor projectiles and they will rarely be able to help each other, and you're almost forced to go reality stone. And you'll probably die by keep away. Or by running into power stone hitbox.
    This, in my opinion, makes flight characters not that great in this game, so I almost feel like they NEED the extra short hop help. Still very good, but not top tier anymore.

    I really wish the whole MCVI situation broke a different way... :( That one quote in one interview from ComboFiend just blew everything up for MVCI... I bet it wasn't that simple, but still. I wasn't aware that this makes Infinite stand out from the other Marvels or maybe even other VS games. I hope the VS series isn't gone for good...

    MvCI didn't get a fair shake. It's quite fun and has lots of creativity like the other versus titles. Glad to see you explore some aspects of the game.

      @@mattyryon it's fine if you didn't like it and I can understand that. However, let's not pretend everyone met the game with open arms. There was heavy criticism upon release and it was memed heavily.
      I should clarify that there was a lot of hate because of the graphics and lack of X-Men. In general the gameplay was not nearly criticised as much as those aspects of the game from what I saw. I could be wrong.

      @@terrabull1639 I am saying that the criticism weighed against it wasn't unfair either, and if anything people defending the game talking about "solid gameplay" were more misleading than any criticism, as the gameplay was extremely shallow relative to prior VS games and it was basically a dead game from a gameplay meta standpoint from a few months in.

    As a fighting game I’ve always enjoyed marvel infinite I understand why people didn’t like it otherwise but by all means it’s mechanically a really great game, it just could’ve used some X-Men and maybe some better care in the visuals.

    As someone who doesn't usually like Versus games, Marvel Infinite is one of the few I REALLY like watching without getting annoyed by the grime and the chaos (alongside DBFZ).
    I now realize the hop might be a decent part of that, and for that I thank you. Any incentive for the characters to stay closer to the ground and longer blockstrings is something I welcome immensely as a viewer who doesn't play the game, but still wants to see the action with most of the characters on the actual screen.

    If you haven’t already, I suggest you cover the topic of Scaling in fighting games. My favorite iteration of this is in Black Magic 2, where how the Scaling was implemented made it so any character could be added, but the game would still be fair no matter what. Not even hackers can avoid this Scaling in Black Magic 2.

    I have two questions as a rookie:
    1) If everyone is going to use short hop anyways then why do we even have a "normal" jump in the first place?
    2) Whey did the fandom seemingly forget about MVCI so quickly and just play MVC3U?

      To answer the first one: Most likely an execution barrier. For example: Nobody would use any other button if Electric Wind God Fist had the same properties but was easier to do

      Because MvCI was a straight up bad launch and the way Combofiend talked about "functions" rubbed people the wrong way. Besides the Battle for the Stones tournament, the game was getting basically 0 push from Capcom, so it wasn't like SFV where you had to play it to stay competitive, and people stuck with the game they liked more, no matter if MvCI was actually good or not

    It's weird considering this was a mechanic they used in their Jojo's game. Makes me wonder why it was never implemented so soon in MvC

      It’s a similar mechanic by the same name, but not entirely the same. In JoJo HFTF, you can’t control the landing spot after you leave the ground from a hyper hop, making it act more like the hyper hops from the King of Fighters series. This one’s a completely unique hyper hop that I haven’t seen used anywhere else

    This was such a good mechanic. I remember Shoultzula bringing it up in the SRK forums prior to release, showing how it could theoretically allow everyone access to 4-way mixups.

    Please make more videos on MVCI, this game had so many great nuances (like the Wall-Bounce/OTG/Ground-Bounce system, stones, and Active Switch in general) that don’t get talked about as often as they should.

    The hyper hop is also intuitively more accessible than wave dash. So you had choice of how to approach.

    I have always said I think MCV Infinite was actually pretty good from a gameplay standpoint. I hope Capcom brings back the VS formula but with Disney and the explosion in popularity of the Marvel brand Capcom can't afford the license anymore. I think Capcom vs Konami could work.

    current KoF has a similar shorthop mechanic. Obviously its vastly different due to it being in a different game but the execution is similar

    I am of the hot take opinion, that, whatever MvCI problems, of which there were many, the core systems that the characters got to interact with, were the best in the series.

    Didn’t even talk about super short hop. Not only can you tap down to cut height, but you can tap down again to lower yourself even further to the ground for some ridiculous instant overhead pressure. It helps characters with floaty jumps get mix like chris or hawkeye.
    And, if you’re insane, you could use it in neutral and have more active aerials than melee.
    If you’re REALLY fucking insane you can throw in a falling special like arthur’s stuff.
    TAS bot’s get rejumps from launcher.

    This mechanic seems more like a King Of Fighter's mechanic. Maybe if SNK Heroines 2 happens and it's closer to Marvel 2, they could take this.

    MvCI, despite the roster and some graphics (Chun Li is fixed but not Dante...), has a good core to it. The gameplay is great. I hope that later some day we get an MvC4 where they can use more characters besides lame movie ones.

    The amazing amount of control and freedom you have over your movement in Tekken is a big reason why it has remained my favorite fighting game.
    Also MvC:I is such a tragic game. The people who were behind the gameplay did an amazing job but everything else surrounding it sucked.

    I actually hate the absurd verticality in Vs games, whether I'm watching or playing, I want to see both characters on-screen at the same time, not the camera chasing one of the fighters into the air while they dodge around a bunch of attacks I can't even see. Even when I'm the one using the vertical space to do the dodging and winning in the process, the fact that I have to rely purely on my ears and a distracting, flashing indicator doesn't feel good. Actually, winning after an exchange like that feels *_bad_* to me.

    Weird question, but is there any reason to normal jump in this game? Hyper hop cuts out super jump's weakness (height), goes as far as a regular jump and obviously gives you aerial drift as you said. Doesn't that make regular jumping redundant, couldn't they just have made regular jump work like this, and axe the admittedly kind of jank 282 input?

    The problem with MvCI will always be the roster. Things to make every character on a more even field so you dont have pick top tiers just so you can deal with basic offense, like Hyper Hop, or How Active Switch work, is great. But the issue is that means basically nothing if you dont want to play anyone. I still hate how they thought Winter Soldier was gonna add some spice to a roster that already had Chris Redfield in it, but saved Asura and Kamala Khan for season 2.
    It really sucks seeing it crash and burn the way it did when the game gets so much praise for its functions. I just cant get into it cause the roster is built on "Its Marvel vs Capcom; it'll sell no matter how lazy we are"

    It continues to bug me that other kusoge stay at one niche game, while these Marvel ones kept getting sequels and were popular enough to be main games at Evo.

    Issues aside, Mvci was so damn fun. Only reason I stopped playing was cause pc matchmaking times just got too much to be worth it. Sad how capcom treated this game.

    im sure someone at capcom wants to do this style of game. but it will most certainly not be a marvel cross over. capcom has more then enough ip's under their belt to fill a roster and it also gives them a chance to see if theres any legitimate interest in some of those dormant ip's. its just not worth it for capcom to deal with disney.

    The mechanics are great in mvci but its a shame the presentation doesn't do it any justice
