You are the best!!! It gave me so much nostalgia watching this again. The nightmares that these local players at my arcade kept trolling me with Karin and just grabbing me to lose all my life LOLLLL. Maybe vega wall dive grab does 99%? Faintly remember this but I am so glad you found Karin and made a video about this. Thank you and now there is a reference on the internet!
The real questions are how on earth did anyone ever actually figure out any of this during the arcade days, and why would the developer put so much time into modes only to hide them such that 99.99% of players would never know exist?
I'm pretty sure those extra modes were talked about back them, because I remember knowing about them, especially since they are unlockable in the console ports by playing World Tour mode.
I can see Karin's being discovered pretty quickly. It helped that newsgroups of the time like alt.games.sf2 and OG websites like Gouki's Page of Whatever spread it like wildfire.
Cheat codes were popular at the time. See Mortal Kombat's fatalities. Companies would usually leak the codes to magazines so they would get out there. I have no idea why it was time locked but if the cabinet was on all day it wasn't a concern.
I remember at least two other throws in the game having the 99% damage property. One of them is Claw's air kick throw I believe. The other might be one of Blanka's air throws or one of Charlie's air throws?
Karin is the kind of woman who would take up the challenge of learning and using Dan's scuffed fighting style and still managing to make it OP purely out of her sheer talent
There's a specific revision of SFA2 that hastily nerfed Rose but as a result bugged the game completely. Fascinating how different stuff was during the Jamma days.
3:18 🤓 Umm, acktchually, Fatal Fury 1 by SNK did this back in 1991, and it was a core part of the game. Instead of entering versus mode when you inserted a quarter, the other player has to restart the fight with you as a co-op partner. Afterwards, you have to play a versus mode match with each other, and the loser needs to pay another quarter to re-join. More fun facts about FF1, it probably had the first instances of backdashing, taunts, counters, and even installs in fighting games, though only certain CPU exclusive characters could perform them. From my understanding, it was also the first to have half circle and tiger knee inputs, along with other unique ones. Strangely, the majority of motions for special moves were changed from the Japanese version to the English version. Also strangely, Andy Bogard can perform all of his special moves in the air, which instantly teleports him to the ground to perform them. If this game had a competitive scene, I bet players would be playing rock paper scissors to see who gets to play Andy.
The Ken & Ryu vs Bison mode was unlockable in the PS1 version of Alpha 1, and it was a ton of fun. My friend and I used to play it for hours. When we got in a situation where we got onto either side of him and bounced him back and forth infinitely with normals we felt like we'd cracked the code. To this day we refer to that kind of wombo combo as "M. Bisoning" someone.
ye it's all fun and games until you're at the receiving end. and by that i mean the final world tour stage from the psp version, where you have to fight evil ryu and akuma at the same time... then dictator and shin akuma where the first one you kill re-spawns once. and finally two boss dictators with infinite supers.
Bro thank you so much for this clear up. I remember seeing these modes in Hyper SF Alpha (it's an unlockable game in SF anthology) and always wondered what they did. But I didn't even know they were in the arcade versions too. I do recall the different background colors representing something though.
Reminds me of when I looked through some japanese Xenoblade 2 text with online translatiors and had a hard time finding out what "majimon" was supposed to mean because the internet was suprisingly unhelpful.
An obscure Glitch I've been trying to reproduce in Alpha 3 for a long time is the Muffled Sound after you kill with a super staying active. I remember I did it happening to me only once or twice and I have about 400 hours in Alpha 3. I think both times were Dhalsim getting a V-Ism KO. I think it fixed itself after the next Super Finish. It may however just have been an emulation glitch since I haven't found anything related to it on the internet
If you get a KO on the same frame as a super flash, the game will pause for a few seconds and sometimes have weird audio depending on what move caused the KO. This is difficult to do by yourself unless you have a projectile thrown at a distance, but it does happen more often in dramatic mode since your partner can hit the opponent while you do a super at the same frame. This happened often enough with a friend that I played dramatic survival with that was more exciting and funny than it was odd. Dramatic survival rewarded the players with more health if they end the round with certain conditions, one of which was with meter.
Unfortunately they ruined her in SF5 which was her big comeback, she may be relatively high tier but she's watered down and SO boring compared to her perfect A/Z3 version.
I just LOVE when half remembered obscurities are rediscovered and publically shared! It's a sad fact of life that so many things get forgotten, but it's always a joy when they get remembered again. Especially when it comes to video games, which simultaneously have among the best and the worst documentation out of anything in the world. And it's incredible how much has been forgotten and/or lost despite how relatively new they are compared to stuff like paintings, music, architecture, and more. If you end up with any more of these undocumented mysteries getting solved, I'd love to hear about them!
The obscure part is that this is a bug from like v1.0 of the game. Tons of bugs are like that, lost to time. MK2 had tons of stuff like this that got patched out in v1.1
@TheoryFighter Hey, just letting you know the audio is screwy. You can hear yourself say "Glitched grab" twice before and after the intro and it throws your lines out of sync with the visuals.
This remind me of when Our arcade changed kof96 cartridge to another kof96 where bosses are selectable Since the bosses have fixed move set and color pallets it seemed like that version was intentional by snk
So, I looked into this a little further. This glitch was in *every* regional version of the game up until Japan / Asia Version 980904 - though it was oddly missing from USA Sample Version 980616. It affects both her ground _and_ air throws and the life drain _seems_ to trigger when the opponent hits their "post-knockdown invulnerability" status. (Denoted by the Guard Meter flashing.) I was not able to determine _why_ this happens, or what makes it unique to Karin in Saikyo Mode. I guess she's truly is the "1-Percenter", here.
I found one more very odd cases of this Saikyo Mode glitch: - Juni and Juli's "Death Cross Dancing" does 90% damage in the initial team-up hit. (Dramatic Battle only.) I also found a related case?: - Akuma's Shun Goku Satsu does… maybe *15% damage* instead of 50% in Saikyo Mode. (All revisions.) Very bizarre stuff.
FINALLY, I had heard of this years ago from ... somewhere. No idea where but I always remembered the factoid of Karin's crazy throw. So glad to actually see it performed after all this time.
The only thing I remember as a kid that I couldn’t replicate was seeing a sf2 rainbow cabinet and seeing somebody do blankas bite grab and then morph into Ryu and do a multiple hitting shoryu. I’m wondering if my memory is fuzzy now and the grab was over and he had one of those shoryus that threw out a bunch of hadoukens too. Oh well lol
I used to play Cody and Guy dramatic battle with a friend. He would hit them up into the air with Cody's tornado and I'd use Guy's air grabs on them. So sick the first time we saw it work
My bit of trivia for this game I don't see mentioned often, Vega's (Claw) stage specific super. On his stage only if you manage to do a triangle super motion with all 6 buttons, he performs his super after interacting with the cage, which is fully invincible for around 2 seconds. Is it practical, maybe? Dodge the duration of anything, maybe waste someone's entire V ism meter. It's a hilarious knowledge check and arguably the most difficult input in the game
i am so happy that alpha anthology on ps2 has all these silly alt gameplay styles that are really easy to access thank GOD. They really are a blast and added a bit more of them too if i remember right!
I remember the throw glitch that Justin was talking about. I seen my friend holding those combinations of buttons down and when you select Karin and when you grab a character, 90% to 99% of their HP will drop.
Kinda fitting that its Saikyo Mode because that is what happens to Dan in MvC2 when he lands a Raging Dan. But he takes his own health down to 1 HP and cant kill himself. Wonder if this glitch is why they gave him that self damage
One mode you didn't mention was Survival. Just like Dramatic was chosen holding all three kicks, Survival was holding all three punches. I think you could stack one of the hidden ISM's with Dramatic/Survival too, like holding HP+LK+MK+HK for Classic + Dramatic. Could be wrong on that.
There's Saikyo mode...Maji mode..and Mega Damage mode. Before you put your quarters into the machine, you have to hold down low punch + low kick (Saikyo = low guard meter) medium punch + medium kick (Maji = opponent beats you one round..and it's game over) or Strong punch + Forward kick (mega damage = opponent has double damage on all their moves). Fierce punch + Roundhouse kick (No ISM mode),
Why does no one ever acknowledge that Dramatic Battle is also a nod to Street Fighter 2’s half brother Fatal Fury (created by the designers of SF1). It’s less obvious than the reference to the SF2 anime movie, but it’s there.
Have you ever unlocked Haggar in Street Fighter Zero (Japanese SFA1)? Most people don't know that he was a secret playable character along with Dan, Vega (Bison) & Gouki (Akuma) in the Japanese arcade version only. I remember seeing pictures of him (I think it was the Final Fight sprite ported over but he had a full moveset with command specials) in a game magazine back when it first came out but I never got to try the code since they never had the Japanese cabinets here. I'm not sure if it works on emulators since I don't have it set up on my PC but, if you ever get around to unlocking him, I'd love to see a video of him in action!
Lol, this reminds me when i seen rainbow edition of sf2. I only seen it once and when I was young. As adult i thought that I'd just imagine it, until I seen footage of it on TH-cam.
Funniest part is bro didnt just answer Jwongs question but he explained Saikyo , Mazi and Classic mode in the alpha 3 games, crazy to think there hasn't been any in depth explanation for them till now
Not quite 99% damage, but Mikado regularly runs double mazi mode tourneys for A3 where it's one round sudden death, and you'll basically die in a few hits. Pretty entertaining to watch.
I own a CPS 2 Alpha 3 blue board and remember hearing about this glitch years ago. I tried it but it doesn't work as my board is one of the later date versions.
Didn't Karin have a 360 motion throw called "The Smasher"? I think that did a ton of damage, but I may have been misremembering it, because I think I know of that insane damage glitch.
I have a weird one. It’s a doozy. I remember playing Tekken 2 back in the arcade. I picked my main boy Marshall Law, and fought against a Kazuya player. But, for some reason when my health bar reached zero, I lost? I mean, what the fucks up with that? My opponent didn’t even give me an extra quarter to make up for him causing this weird glitch. It was so strange.
This is great. Now try Shin Akuma's Raging Demon on Mazi with a full health opponent. Side note: You have to beat world tour and have him on lvl 32 or master. I'm not sure if this works in the arcade, but it did work on the SFA3 Max for the PSP.
You could unlock those modes in the console version as well. I remember playing them a lot. I didn't try Karin on console with Saikyo though. I may have to one of these days when I pick up a game.
@@CS.AtheistChannel.VoteBidenAOC I mean the bonus fighting modes. I believe the game also unlocked everything after 96 hours. It would make sense they would patch it out lol.
@@InfiniteTranscendence what I mean is karins throw got fixed in a later arcade version. Console uses that patched version, and has the modes open always
A3 was loaded with bugs and quirky hitboxes. Here's a quick example. What happens in the following scenario? Gen is in Kick mode and does Cr.HP. Ken does Heavy DP. They are point blank, touching each other. If you guessed "everything whiffs" you were correct.

Were these cheat codes on a back of a Gamepro or EGM? This is definitely old school FGC hidden communication. The good ol days.😀😃😁
If only this glitch were in the PS1 version 😂
Still my fav Street Fighter of them all; so much fun with my friends on this one!
You could unlock those modes in the console version as well. I remember playing them a lot.
I didn't try Karin on console with Saikyo though. I may have to one of these days when I pick up a game.
Patched out on home consoles
@@CS.AtheistChannel.VoteBidenAOC I mean the bonus fighting modes.
I believe the game also unlocked everything after 96 hours.
It would make sense they would patch it out lol.
@@InfiniteTranscendence what I mean is karins throw got fixed in a later arcade version. Console uses that patched version, and has the modes open always
@@CS.AtheistChannel.VoteBidenAOC I got what you're saying and I completely agree. 😊
Sick video. I wonder what causes this to happen.
Depending on the version you had different bugs, but these aren't the only ones.
Another doom music laden fighting game lore video. Great.
Vegas super claw stab move does similar damage in that mode. 😅
Grappler envy.
Edit:hang on, you unlock Julie twice? Padded roster smh… or I’m deaf
Juni and Juli, my accent stood no chance making them sound different
@@TheoryFighter yeah, I made that comment and then immediately got to their double fight and read the difference. Hope you don’t feel bad, I have pretty bad hearing for people with “no” accent
And it just so happens that their names are actually meant to be pronounced like, "Yuni" and "Yuli"
I think their names are supposed to be based on July and June, the 12 Cammy twins.
@@CS.AtheistChannel.VoteBidenAOC toxic name
I go for throws in every game. That’s it.

I reflexively startes typing

I hate you buddy. 1:16
Man had me BELIEVING I was colourblind 😂😂😂
I’m just thick. You clearly say from cream to red. But because of how the video rolls I thought wow my eyes are colourblind 😂😂
I think the Dreamcast version has those modes unlock... Right? Of course you can't do this glitch. But... At least you can play those modes.
I would love to see you do a video on the fan game hyper dragon ball z which is a super well made game somewhere between street fighter 3 and guilty gear. I would highly recommend it
Karin Ojou-Sama
That’s one reason to pick Saikyo mode lol
Imagine if this didn’t exist and Justin just wanted to mess with you ^_^
2:59 - Dramatic* 😉
I am begging you to learn what an apostrophe is lol. Love the video as always though
9:32 I'm dying, best joke that ever murdered me.
