After 60 years of playing many brands and models of clarinets, I'd say that there's nothing at all special about Buffet clarinets except their wide swings in quality compared to other makers' professional offerings.
@@bmcgar yes, I agree that the quality consistency is a huge pet peeve of mine about Buffet clarinets as well. However, if and when all the drawbacks have been eliminated, these clarinets are very enjoyable to play on.
Ought to be an option on all of the horns. Mopane is less expensive to buy than grenadilla, query why these are so "special" (other than being steeped in unobtainium, of course).
Knowing Buffet, they're floating a new product that they can charge an outlandish price for. If people buy them, they'll keep making them, especially because mopane is much cheaper than blackwood and blackwood supplies are decreasing.

@@jimis3167 Musicians keep asking the stupid question about material. It has been proven countless times that woodwind tone does NOT depends on material but internal geometry. Mopane is actually from a close specie as Grenadilla except it’s brown instead of black.
@@rashakor I don't think sound colour depends only on internal geometry.. I definitely hear quite a difference between a boxwood Legende and a Grenadilla one.. and they have the exact same internals.. Mopane maybe is similar to Grenadilla? I don't know..
@@jimis3167, I wrote a long reply, but somehow it didn't post. The essence of it was that one would have to compare two identical models of clarinet, with the same bore, etc., the only difference being the wood. My two Bb clarinets are of different bores, one in blackwood and one in mopane. The mopane instrument sounds "less direct," a bit more resonant, and "softer" than the blackwood. How much of a difference can be attributed only to the wood is unclear. (I had Luis Rossi make the mopane instrument for me primarily because I wanted a different bore and also because I wanted a more environmentally responsible alternative to blackwood, not mainly because I expected a striking difference in timbre between the two woods.

No. It's nearer blackwood than boxwood.
