Imagine using an instrument from another culture and putting modern style melody into it NOICE. Cuz never thought thus instrument could be used this way since I hear it so much at funerals or my cultural events
I love the Khaen! My childhood was full of traditional Thai music that my dad would play on and on so this sound is very familiar to me. It's very nostalgic and so, so beautiful!
I think the familiarity everyone seems to feel with this comes from organs and horn sections in modern music and a lot of what we grew up with. It has a similar feel and fills a similar musical space
So glad a lad Bible video about you popped into my Facebook feed, this instrument is beautiful and you're incredibly talented, can't wait to see what else you do with it!
I iust love the two people in back trying to find the right tones and notes to jump and jam with you but struggle from the start cause youre playing so many notes at the same time its hard to gind just one chord or note to jazz into... wonderful
Wish I could have been there. I'm from ohio and am just now learning about this instrument. I love old fascinating instruments such as the hurdy gurdy and the khaen. If you know any others please let me know, also inform me of any upcoming events in ohio this guy might be doing. I really enjoy his stuff, very melodic and enchanting.
Hal: A friend just "shared" your video. I love this. I am subscribing to your channel. What an amazing instrument. Where could one purchase something like this? Cheers.
@@banakula Ah, so it has some sort drone pipes that make noise whenever air is blown through it no matter which pipe is played. Thanks for the quick response!
They are actually really good but from the looks of it they didn’t rehearse with him so they were kinda just trying to figure out what to do on the spot. It’s incredibly difficult to try to improvise over a song you’ve never heard before on an instrument you’ve never seen before.
You caught me. I've been playing those 2 chords practically since the first time I picked up the khaen. The fingering lays very naturally. Thanks for listening.
It just means Hal Walker is proof that if you're good enough you can play the same thing over and over again with some variations and still sound amazing
So many unique instruments are passed over in the modern times for the things we all recognize and are familiar with, but this one, this one resonates with me in a different way. I need more of this!
So this is the origin of all those neat RPG scores I use to hear ans still hear in games.
Yeah dude I feel like I just healed my party with potions after a rough battle
Unironically, it's sounds so familiar, like some Final Fantasy game
Is that where it's from, this sounds so familiar but I don't know where it's from.
I dunno man since my country is Laos and kinda under the radar I doubt Japan would come to it for their games unless maybe they did dunno
I think the sound is mostly from the khaen's japanese cousin, the Sho
I think that's the perfect song to show off what the instrument is capable of.
What song is it?
@@beavermatixx6116 low key gliding
Not even close. The originla style it was used for is even crazier. Search Sombat Simla. He's the Khaen master

Came from tiktok and sooooooo want one of these. Freaking awesome. Thanks for sharing
i have sensitive ears and this made them tingle broooo this shit’s magical
so you’ve been playing these 2 chords for 5 years? never gets old.
In all fairness, when a khaen is made it’s made in a certain key. So to play a wide variety of chords you’d literally need multiple khaens.
