Such a cool clip! Didn't see a thorough explanation in the comments so for those wondering why he changed keys etc: Key signature: B Major. (Clip ends with a plagal cadence in B). He starts out playing the E harmonica soloing in B Mixolydian (bluesy sound). Middle section switches to E Major. He plays the A harmonica to get E7(the dominant of 4), giving it that more bluesy/country sound. Before going back to the E harmonica to get (B7->E) and back to home. Then proceeds to shred all over E Major with the E harmonica. Back to A section, more B mixolydian soloing then out.
Harmonica has 20 notes, 10 of which are "draw", and 10 are "blow. Rapid play is not actually "stopping" your breath, but instead tongue blocking / slapping: you use your tongue to cut off the air while blowing steadily. With careful arrangement, you can steadily breath in (draw) your air, while playing some notes, then breath out (blow) on other notes, while tongue-blocking / slapping to keep the rhythm correct.
When you play in such a demanding manner, it's usual for you to get a little hyperventilated. Just a little bit, though. There's a saying for learning harmonica, which is to "breath through the instrument". Unlike other wind instruments, harmonica is both blown and drawn, so you don't have to alternate between breathing and playing; you just do them both as one. So that helps preventing exhaustion. Plus, harmonica reeds are really tiny. You don't really to mobilize too much air to make them sound. And, finally: it's very frequent that two notes are in the same "direction". Say, for example: you are playing a C harmonica and you need to play C, E and G. These three notes are located in holes 4 blow, 5 blow and 6 blow, respectively. In other words: they are all blow notes, and they are all in adjacent holes. So you don't need to cut your airflow. You just keep blowing as you slide from left to right.

I love this channel! You didnt leave the harmonica out and i bet a lot of people appreciate it. I love the story behind this technique, and sharing is really amazing in the world of music. To play different notes on the harmonica, most of the movement must come from sliding it with your hands but moving your neck the least possible. To get the speed he needed, Buddy Greene started moving his jaw left and right subconsciously, adding a third motion to the harmonica sliding. One day, when he was practicing speed building, a guy that was watching him said to him "Man!, you look like a guy eating your corn!". The "corn eater" technique was shown on this performance. Can't tell if he was the first ever to pull it off, but he is the first that was filmed exploiting it like this. Happy sharing everyone!❤️

Circular breathing might be part of the answer.

I see I'm not the only one who's been on a Dimension 20 bender.
Oh, you can go higher! Nat 20 + 5 from charisma + 6 from highest level proficiency bonus + another 6 from expertise + a maximum 12 from bardic inspiration + a maximum 4 for the spell Guidance + a maximum 4 from the Sorcerer's Bend Luck feature + a maximum 10 if you have at least 6 Warlock levels (Dark One's Own Luck) + a maximum 4 from being a Mark of Shadow Elf come out to a maximum of 71 before adding any magic items into the mix. Do keep in mind that the rules consider 30 to be "Nearly Impossible".
@@BobTheism you are BANNED from my table lmao!

@@BobTheism My next character will be a Harmonica bard.
This is going in my playlist of random good videos I come across
Most impressive thing I've ever seen
I love the Orange Blossom Special. I've heard it done by Charlie Daniels, Roy Clark, Johnny Cash, Flatt and Scruggs.... but I've never heard it played like this. This is amazing.
You should hear the Seatrain version
1:40 My man's feeling the groove.

The harmonica went and had a smoke after that performance
It was on fire that night
the sheet music really said "terminate foot stomping" i cant hahahaa
The way he seamlessly switches between harmonicas is amazing
holy shit I've never been more interested in harmonica than I am right now
Never knew how much a harmonica could sound like a fiddle, what expression!
In my high school indoor percussion group, we actually played this song on the steel drums. Yes, steel drums on a bluegrass song. We live in a rural area, so it’s pretty common for that type of music to be played. Our community and other percussion groups love to hear us with our interesting combinations that we play every year.
I keep coming back to this video every now and then just love this video so much
Me and bro after driving 900 miles there and 900 miles back in under 48 hours with a truckload of coors

@@athaya2992 I got a picture of him making harmonica noises of his girl while doing cunningulus
Same, that oral talent is something to fight over
Now THAT is a professional harmonica player!!! JEEESSSSS that was awesome! Definitely one of the most enjoyable and hyped-up musical videos I've ever seen, ESPECIALLY the fact that it's only around 2:30 minutes long! Bravo to the harmonica player, he did an OUTSTANDING job! I appreciate southern-like/country music so much more now, thanks to this video! :)
I typically watch videos at 2x playback speed but go back to normal speed for music videos. I was genuinely concerned that I had mistakenly been watching the video at that 2x speed, but no... that's the normal speed.
His wife must be one lucky lady
I have seen a lot, and played myself with quite a few, and watched many a TH-cam videos - this is on the top 10 of all times
Funny enough, I get accordion/polka vibes from this performance. Amazing stuff!
This guy is like the Franz Liszt of harmonica…and that is something I never expected to ever say!
All I can think of when hearing this is a runaway train.
This is a moment where no matter what music you like, respect alone keeps you watching
This man's diaphram is as powerful as Arnold Schwarzenegger's bicep
Weird to see harmonica music written out in sheet music lol. Been playing for about 8 years and I’ve learned all by ear or simple tabs.
Maaaan... I once watched a fiddle player nearly light her bow on fire playing the OBS. This dude is out of bounds. Also there's a lot one could say about his lip and tongue control, but I'll let the rest of everyone who reads this comment worry about that.
I've cleaned many gameboy games when I was a kid, so this should be easy enough to do
Bet his wife is very happy
In an alternate universe where the Devil went to Georgia with a golden golden harmonica, this is Johnny.

its so great to see harmonica representation! maybe check out howard levy and jason ricci if you want some more epic harp pieces to transpose
Definitely some excellent choices there!
This i why i love this type of music, just the raw energy that goes into playing it.
Beautiful! I have my great-grandmother's viola da terra, made on Sao Miguel around 1900. Her parents were from San Jorge. I am glad you have preserved this instrument!
Good ole Buddy Greene!! What a legend!!!!! I used to watch him on the Gaither homecoming videos!!
Great job introducing more people to buddy Green only the best harmonica player ever
Aahh, love me some Buddy Greene! Talented musician and music writer, as indicated by his music of "Mary, Did You Know?"
Ah yes perfect 4am content
Im in love with this man now.
His breathing technique is very impressive. Circular breathing. Also, he’s playing those notes fast by double tonguing.
I’m pretty sure he’s just breathing in whenever he has to breath in to get certain notes.
@@izaakthoms yeah this guy doesn't know harmonica. He probably thinks it's just like any other wind instrument
lol
Breathing out of a harmonica makes the same sound too, you know...
@@oskazar No, breathing in makes a different sound than breathing out, I think it's fifth higher.
Love this video! The harp is the most underrated instrument
Few people in the comments don't seem to know you play a harmonica on the inhale and the exhale. I've been playing for 15yrs, and that shit ain't easy and is easy harder than you think; Mr. Greene is no joke, the man knows how to harp
For such a small instrument, it commands a lot of attention
i love buddy greene hes been on my country playlist for years
