I might have mentioned that I'm 82 years young, as the opening words to this song say "I ain't afraid of dying "I've lived with PF since the beginning, the voice of the lady too me sounds like she's singing a lullaby to Syd Barrett founding member of PF so beautiful. You've taken a road you'll never regret. Hi from Perth Australia.

@@brainsqueezereactions hello again Hector, I might be having a great gig in the sky myself soon, as I've just got news from the hospital that I've got pretty severe lung cancer, oh well we'll see how treatment goes, I've had a pretty good innings as they say, as I mentioned in my PF post, I'm not afraid of dying, but a great sadness has suddenly hit me that I'll be losing my family, there is a beautiful song out there called " the living years" by Mike and the mechanics. Incredible lyrics, if you get a chance give it a play please, it's got tremendous depth. Thanks mate from Perth Australia 😎🎶🎵🖐🦘

I bought this album the day it released in the USA in March 1973. Nearly 50 years later and after listening to it probably well over a thousand times, I still get goosebumps and tears every time, even more so now than back then. This music never ages. It sounds as good as ever and the meaning in the lyrics only deepens as we grow older. Decades from now when I'm long gone and you're my age, I promise you will still be immensely grateful to have had this music in your life.

Every song on the Pulse live tour was epic but nothing beats the original Great Gig on first time listen.
Money is the next track on the album, and one you may have actually heard without knowing.
Very different vibe and takes a much more political slant and dig at the music industry.
So glad you are enjoying the band I fell in love with back in the 70's.
Funny though that many of my friends and I just took the floyd, Led Zep, Bowie, Genesis, supertramp and the like for granted at the time.
Only now, looking back, I realise what a magic period it truly was for music.

Really enjoying your reactions to Pink Floyd. Your frantic worry when you fear each track is nearly over speaks to how compelling Pink Floyd can be. I'm on the spectrum (Asperger's) and there's something about their music that unlocks a part of my brain. Amazing stuff. As others may have mentioned, their pivotal four albums are all concept albums, where the ideas and themes flow and are expanded on from track to track. You're getting beautiful chapters of books right now, but they're even better when you know the context. If you do listen to other tracks off Dark Side of the Moon, most can be listened to separately but I'd highly recommend pairing Brain Damage and Eclipse together. You won't regret it! Glad to see another person discovering Floyd.

    Hi
It's great that PF fans enjoy your responses. You are able to express what so many of us feel when we listen to them.
I feel it's an imposition to recommend anything, but we Floyd fans are very passionate about the music.
One of the best Syd Barret compositions would be 'Astronomy Domine' as played live on the Umma Gumma album. This is the sound that changed music forever and set PF on the path that led to all their later work. Unfortunately, Syd Barret suffered from conditions they had no name for back then (like Bi-Polar), plus his overuse of drugs meant his undiagnosed condition got the better of him. He will shine on like a crazy diamond.
The sheer experimentation needed for the later solid sound is well expressed in 'Several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a Pict' also from Umma Gumma. You will hear sounds used again in later albums.
Part of PF's assay into the emotional possibilities of sound has a superb testing ground in their musical horror piece 'Careful with that axe Eugene'. Apart from the 1972 German bootleg, my favourite version is at the Brighton Dome, also 1972.
You have clearly expressed your own view and opinions, so please be happy to ignore these suggestions as they are merely that.
    Keep happy and enjoy.

I love this song. This one is about death and loss. It soooo makes me think of the wailing women when she sings. This version is great, but the live version on Pulse gives me such chills when Sarah Brown screams "Oh Yeah!" that I literally feel tears well in my eyes every time!

Clare Torry describes in an interview how she sang the part: She got the invitation from Alan Parsons (chief sound engineer), who tipped the band members off to this girl. She was a background singer who was moonlighting in the Abbey Road studio. When she came into the studio, she discovered that the song had no words. They played her the record and she sang "lalala, oh oh...". But the musicians didn't want that. But she didn't know how else to take it. Until David Gilmour described what the song was about and told her to imagine that her voice was just another musical instrument. Then she sang it. When they wanted her to try again, she refused. She got a fee of £15 and left. She thought they wouldn't even put the song on the album. After a while, on the way to work, she saw a poster in a shop with a trailer for a new Pink Floyd album and out of curiosity went to see it - and The Great Gig in the Sky was there! Years later, she extorted a royalty from Pink Floyd for all the royalties she had received so far, and has been listed as a co-writer of the song ever since.
Here is a link to Clare Torry's interview about the recording of this song: th-cam.com/video/mIW7xZSlZoM/w-d-xo.html
Continue with the next song in the sequence - Money - another great recording from this iconic album...

Im a bit late to your reactions, having only just found you! Also i dont know if this has been mentioned, as i wasnt about to go through every comment made but have you been told about the story behind the lady singing?!
If not..well she was asked to do a session and went into the booth and produced that track song. As she came out the booth, she couldnt be more apologetic. Saying how sorry she is that she really F***ed that up!! The pink floyd crew were just gobdmacked and said they loved it. Its now an iconic masterpeice of singing known around the world to all pink floyd fans and many who aren't fans at all.
As a huge floyd fan, its so lovely to see you react the way you have, as i can never listen to this for the first time ever again but watching how it affected you is as damn close as ill ever get again!!

While they were working on this track, they tried all sorts of things to put over the bass /piano. Amongst the oddest is the jazz violinist Stephan Grapelli, who happened to be in Abbey Road at the same time. It surfaced a couple of years ago on one of the box sets.
Eventually they settled on the human voice /instrument, and Clare Torry.

David Gilmour does a steel guitar intro along with Richard Wright on the piano (keyboard). On the Pulse concert album, Gilmour continues the steel guitar right to the very end. The 3 women who sing the solo on the Pulse concert album do a great job, but Clare Torry who sings it here -- owns the song!
