When titans of the fight world clash, you are bound to have fireworks. Dale Cook was on top of the world when he fought Changpuek. He had just beaten 5 Thais in a row, some very highly ranked. He was a 7th degree blackbelt with great boxing (19-2) and a 80-2 record in kickboxing at the time of this bout.
Changpuek was also in his prime, having just come off wins against Rob Kaman and Rick Roufus, each respectively the best of their country. These classic stylistic matches teach us a lot about techniques and strategy.

Important to mention that the Thais were ALWAYS at a disadvantage in these matches because the rules always took away half of their arsenal of techniques. They had to change their styles and will themselves to forget/forbid movements they've naturally been utilising since childhood.

I'm a relative combat newbie (mostly go to a boxing gym a few times a week), but I really appreciated your explanation of why Muay Thai fighters tended to avoid punch combinations. ok everybody let me shed some light on the TKD guy Mr Cook although a solid fighter the majority of his fights like 90 of the 99 were in Oklahoma where he was his own promoter and his boxing matches 19 of the 22 were also fought in OKlahoma so yea he just padded the hell out of his record against karate guys back then he was NOT ready for Kitsongrit and the fact that he lost to John Moncayo who was KOd by both Rick Roufas and Rob Kaman should tell you something and Cook never fought Rick Roufas or Manson Gibson( who beat Kitsongrit twice Knocking him out once and even KOing the legend Coban) also a side not Kitsongrit was 24 compared to Mr Cook who was 34 and nearing his retirement so how about doing an episode on Manson Gibson aka the Thai Killer hes an American TKD style kickboxer.... now im not trying to discredit Mr.Cook he was a World Champion and he is a warrior stepping up and taking on the Thai Legend in the ladder stages of his career speaks of his heart.

I think the way the muay Thai fighters condition their legs is the deciding factor or one of them at least. Like when van dam chopped the palm tree down with his chins in the movie kickboxer. If you're truly conditioned you can block anything and deliver the most devastating blows. MacGregor and silva while I'm sure we're conditioned but not insanely conditioned, which comes from a lifetime of conditioning practice....very painful but necessary.

As a Thai people I have to say you have to learn muaythai to deal with muaythai, because muaythai is a Kryptonite for muaythai by itself.
And if you understand how to deal with all those 8 weapons you will never afraid to deal with whatever art in This world like those Muaythai fighters who never afraid to fight whatever arts around the world with whatever rules and never care about weight or what weapons they were banned or cannot use, all of them just known the word from old generation muaythai fighters that says "fight anyone, fight anywhere".
Many foreigners don't know that Muaythai has 5 main style for Muaythai fighters to choose, some of them even thought they just learn muaythai and mix with another art they known and they just thought they created a new style of muaythai.
Muaythai have 5 different styles of the fighters and these 5 styles have different stance and rhythm.
1.Muay-mud = punch style most fighters who has based boxing like to use this style ie. Ramon dekkers who Thai people called "kang-hun-lom-na-rok"(windmill from hell) Some foreigners who never known there are these 5 styles of muaythai called this style "Dutch-muaythai" style.
2.Muay-tae = kick style, there are so many great muaythai fighters use this style too ie. Samkor, Buakaw(Buakaw was a Muaykhao fighter before when fought with Thais)
3.Muay-khao = knee style, The legend Dieselnoi used this style and used only his knees and his knee stance destroyed most great muaythai fighters in Thailand in that time and he retired because noone want to fight against him.
4.Muay-sok = elbow style, there are many great muaythai fighters use this style and success ie. Yodkhunpon
5.Muay-femur = mix all style up to the fighter. Many great muaythai fighters use this style too ie. Saenchai, Somrak
It's all up to the muaythai fighters to choose which style they like. Even Somrak Khamsing who won the Olympic gold medal in boxing at the same year Mayweather got Bronze but when he fight Muaythai he chose Muay-femur style which is not for punch style fighter. And Buakaw was a Muay-khao fighter when he fought with Thai fighters.
For Muaythai One style kill other style but lose to other style.
Muaythai has many style but noone know which style is the best, it's up to the fighter too.
      Like ancient Muaythai fighter said
      " -Use Muay-khao(knee) to deal against Muay-mud(punch)
-Use Muay-mud(punch) to deal against Muay-tae(kick)
-Use Muay-tae(kick) to deal against Muay-Sok(elbow)
-Use Muay-Sok(elbow) to deal against Muay-khao(knee)
One day if you expert all of these weapon it would be a lot easier for you to deal with any art in this world.
I didn't say muaythai is the best but if you want to know how to deal with muaythai...I have to say you have to use muaythai my friend.

Usman, Chandler, Ghathje, and other top guys are working with Henri Hooft. Hooft was a Dutch Kickboxing fighter. There are almost no exclusively muay thai strikers at the highest levels of mma. Muay thai offense is perfect for mma but stance and movement are not. Kickboxing allows for more foot work and changing of levels and stance. The answer to muay thai vs Kickboxing is moot. It's about the fighter's. Ramon Dekkers beat the best but lost to them as well. All the while using dutch. Muay is still the best pure striking style hands down. Kickboxing is an mma striking form.

Today it's completely irelevant which style is better. Cos best strikers know both styles and basics in other striking styles. And modern kickboxing includes knees and elbows, atleast outside of tournaments... I am an amateur kickboxer, and my trainer, who used to be pro kickboxer, also teach us elements from Muay Thai, such as knees, elbows, catching kicks, etc... I supose modern Muay Thai also teach some punching thechniques from boxing, to complement their kicking... Only real difference, from what i can see, is guard and pace...

I don’t get it. Why doesn’t he just hit his leg so hard it breaks right in half? Just knee and then just go full out for so long your opponent can’t hold on. If you just keep hitting for 7 minutes straight then how will they strike?

Excellent video my friend. I discovered real Muay Thai fighting through Saenchai and Thai Fight. It's my favorite sport, and thanks to TH-cam I've watched over 500 fights easily. There are now 3 organizations that stream full card events 6 days a week. I stopped caring about the UFC and MMA in general. In most cases too much hype and not enough top level striking and constant submission attempts. The modern Muay Thai three round, limited clinch fighting format is more exciting and safer for the fighters. And the fighters don't say anything negative about opponents. The respect is real, because of the shared work ethic and toughness to get into the ring to do battle.

Problem with Muy Thai low kicks to the thighs is that it won’t save your life in real street fight or self-defense situation where you don’t get many chances or rounds to wear down your opponent.
I’ve been kicked hard on thighs and legs and incurred bruises from those shots from very experienced kickers. Low kicks to thighs and legs need numerous rounds to end the fight. In real life we don’t have that luxury.

Muay Thai isn't the be-all, end-all to striking: Kyokushin Karate was created by Mas Oyama by adapting Goju Ryu to full contact as opposed to point kumite. 2 out of 3 of Mas Oyama's pupils defeated their Thai opponents and Mas Oyama himself defeated Black Cobra. Dutch kickboxing is Kyokushin karate mixed with boxing and people like Rob Kaman and Ramon Dekkers fought the Thais and beat them via Dutch kickboxing. Even in MMA Dutch kickboxing works better than Muay Thai: Alistair Overeem and Bas Rutten use it and GSP does Kyokushin.
