    1991, seems like only a few years ago but it's really thirty. Time is a funny thing as one gets older. As unpopular as a lot of imported cars were back then, it was a much better class of racing than the "Supercars" of today will ever be.

      That’s it. Had Australians at the time had a different mindset, Holden and ford’s future may have been very different. Banning the skylines in a way gave no incentive for the cars to get better. Holden and ford barely changed technology wise from 1990-2017. Besides the introduction of the Barra, which unfortunately was never raced.

      HRT were using a twin exit exhaust and an enclosed airbox where as the Perkins built Mobil cars used single exit straight through HM Muffler and also ran a more open induction setup with no box. At the time the rules allowed for more intake and exhaust freedoms so they likely ran different header setups as well.

    Its amazing to think that Skaife hit 293 km/h on Conrod in the GT-R in 1991 which is about 15 km/h quicker than the current GT3 cars that run in the Bathurst 12 hour.....yet the GT-R was some 10 seconds a lap slower than they are today. Tyres, suspension and of course aerodynamic downforce (Group A cars had little to no downforce really) is the big reason for the improvement in lap times. The GT3 cars are just so much quicker across the mountain which is where they make up their time. And back in 1991 we all thought a 2:12.63 lap was an awesome time.

    • @woopimagpie
      @woopimagpie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Indeed. I was at the 12 Hour earlier this year, to see the GT3 cars coming across McPhillamy and down through the esses was just breathtaking. Until I got used to it I swore every car was going to crash when they first started going really fast. Most of the GT3 cars were running 2:02s and 2:03s pretty consistently when the conditions were right. Amazing to watch.

    • @BruceLee-sw4ms

      GT3 cars are detuned for parity - some of the race cars have less power than the street cars. Most sit around the 500hp mark where if they were allowed 700hp plus is achievable- easily.

    The VN was not homologated to race : 302 built -500 required to race . Probably explains why most Sierras were slower than they were 5 Bathursts before -handicapped out of it with weight and narrower tyres

  • @simoncarter5951
    @simoncarter5951 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Skafe kept claiming to have been going as fast as he could despite having some errors. There was no need to do this unless it was likely to be in question by other. He was a second quicker than his teammate and three seconds quicker than the competition. Clearly both gtrs were holding back. Cars driven hard will have close and constant times. The gtrs were all over the place. But of course go to fast and you risk protest from other teams which was already starting to happen.

    The GTRs clearly had an unfair advantage. The holdens didn't stand a chance against these Goliaths.
    That's why Parity was important further down the line.

      The difference is that Nissan produced a performance car for Group A racing while the Commodore was a family car suitably adapted for racing. Put simply Nissan made a better car.

      Yeah, the GTR was never built to battle with commodore. Its a damn porsche battler... It was very unfair for the commos and anyone else brave enough to race against it. Even though they ended up adding so much weight in ballast to slow it down, it was just no use. It was too damn perfect for racing.

      To be fair, the Sierras were made with group A in mind too and they still didn’t have a chance. I heard that Skaife/Richards’ GTR was quietly asked not to compete in the Nissan factory event because they were worried it would beat even the Calsonic GTR, making that Skyline possibly the fastest car in all of Group A touring.

      AKA Zeus you’re correct. Fred Gibson was offered by Nissan Japan to compete at the Fuji endurance race that year, on the proviso he shared his technical data and car setup with Nismo. As Fred’s team in aus did all their own development work in house without any help from the factory, he politely refused to share info. In return the invite was cancelled. Fred Gibson takes no shit 😂

      Why do you say that the GT-R had an unfair advantage over the Commodore? Was the advantage over the other vehicles fair?

    Larry Perkins MOST Embarrassing Comment in Australian Motorsport History...Quote: " On paper the Nissan's are Quicker...they're a Racing Car not a Touring Car"...ummmm. No Larry...not just on paper...on the TRACK!...All said while sitting in a RACE CAR !!! If it wasn't such an Embarrassing Ludicrous Comment and an insult to his Team that built his RACE CAR it would be funny

    Moving the 'Goal Posts' is never equal. Racing a six cylinder turbocharged four wheel drive is a totally different ball game. The fact is that the Fords and the Holdens were nobbled by our corrupt press that stopped the production of high performance Australian cars. Today, a normally aspirated V8 is quicker than a Turbocharged engine (in the USA) because of CCs and development. Our corrupt media destroyed our manufacturing base. All my motor vehicles were Australian build except for a Datsun 1600 Sports. My 1968 Morris Cooper S was Australian built. Our leftist, Communist, treacherous media has an agenda to destroy our Australian way of life and bring in a Communistic Society just as the ones that have already failed in Russia, (the USSR - Soviet Union) Venezuela etc. We fools have given China all our manufacturing and now China is laughing at us. Wake up Australia. LEST WE FORGET.

      No it was the LNP who destroyed the Australian motoring industry, but as long as they dismantled the unions that's all that mattered.

      @@brucelamberton8819 both sides are the same .. same club .. same end goal ... the destruction of this country.. unions are run by corrupt backstabbers and have a lot to answer for this mess, but it is not only them that are to blame
