I use my grandpa's favorite mug to install seals.

Aka, sockets? I have the aluminum seal installer set, but it seems to not work in many situations, where a correct size Socket and extension usually works great. Sometimes i’ll use a socket and prybar where space is limited.
    ....ok, ok, nice kit.

If a socket won’t work I usually end up making something. Recently had to replace the rear transmission seal on a forklift. It had a very short prop shaft to the drive axle, so no room to swing a hammer. Removed the drive flange and after removing the old seal, discovered I had nothing close to the size. Asked the other guys in the workshop, no joy, so started hunting around. Found something that was just the right size, an old insulted travel coffee mug! Cut the top off it, it was ideal. Plastic top edge to protect the seal, stainless steel for strength. Rigged up a plate & used a bolt on the output shaft to pull the seal in, job done! :)

Thanks for the video Michael. I have had the same set from "Private Brand Tools" for several years now. It has served me well.

Ball joint press cups are another option.

Couple weeks ago I did a axle seal but i didn't have the right size to drive it in🙄think I used the old seal or a old race bearing that was laying around😏

I do the same thing. I have saved many bearing cups of all different sizes of tapered wheel bearings to use along with my regular driver set.

I just drill an appropriately sized hole in a piece of wood, and drive in the seal with a pipe and a hammer (with the driven end covered with an end cap, of course.) To heck with special service tools.

I use my SO ball joint press cups for seals like that, works perfectly almost every time! And a 17mm fits tight over the adapter if I need an extension for it!

I always use grey pneumatic impact sockets as seal drivers, they are cheap and work well. That kit is 95 bucks i can get a lot of gp sockets for 95 bucks

  • @DonBMW

I’ve used a 2x4 piece of wood, PVC, and even plumbing unions. Essential tools are my sockets and wheel drive bearing kit that contains lots of cup and cap sizes along w a brass hammer and punch. Hardest seal i had to install was the outputshaft seal in a BMW trans. A little lube, brass punch and hammer and a lot of patience makes all the difference.

mike i had a whole work bench drawer full of old bearings, bearing races , from wheels, trucks, rear ends. and any misc part that loooked like a good candidate for a so called special tool. back in the day of non hubbed wheels, good info there sir!!

When I worked for Nissan we had a special tool we used for axle seals and it never worked . It fit perfectly around the seal but it would never fit to make the seal go in flush something would interfere lol so I would use it to get it started then use a 1/4 extension to make it flush . Everyone in the shop got in the habit of doing it that way

    • @radleybradford1356
      @radleybradford1356 ปีที่แล้ว

Huh? Like a ratchet/socket extension bar? Why 1/4"? I think 3/8" sounds safer, or do you only want to make contact with the outer lip? In my case there's a spring on the inner and I didn't use grease to set it in place. Think I'm looking at a redo :/ (lex rx300) not mine 😅

just a helpful tip, if you're installing a seal that has a spring in it to keep tension on the seal, 1) you can remove the spring and tighten it a little bit if needed, and 2) I keep a tub of trans goo close by and pack the inside of the seal with it to help keep the spring in place, nothing like putting a pinion seal in and when you look the spring has came out of the seal.....

I wonder if there's anything in my shop I haven't used to drive in a seal. A few weeks ago I used an old oil filter canister to install wear sleeve on a Mack harmonic balancer. I keep old bearing races and seals around to use as install tools. That and the 1" drive socket set does most of what I need.

Hardest ive done was a Subaru 4EAT torque converter shaft seal😳 damn I ruined 2 seals because it was soo tight grease worked best and a 30mm deep and worked it around carefully i felt I deserved a drink after that

I have had that seal puller work quite a few times. A couple times I have put the puller hooks in a seal and grabbed them with visegrips and then tapped the visegrips with a hammer to pop the seal out.

Skf TMFT 36 bearing installation kit is what I use at the factory I work at. Plenty of room for a shaft but not great for small areas but it's light and I've yet to mess up a seal

Shop manual for 2001 Saturn SL2 advises to use J44809 Intermediate axle shaft seal Installer for passenger side. But can I use same tool for the Driver Side? The seal there is of the similar form, but larger. The seals are PTC PT4613N Oil and Grease Seal for CV Axle and
PTC PT4614N Oil and Grease Seal for CV Axle for Passenger and Driver sides correspondently. Thank you for the film.

How to you find out which seal driver is the correct one from manufacturer tools. They just show the number with no application.

that is a great set for seal's,i got mine at my local auto part's store and was one of those let me get it and try it and that was ten or more year's ago! i don't know if you get the tool catalog's(the nations automotive tool box, tool web, tools&equipment)down there in the sweat belt but these are a great for young tech's starting out, better price's then the tool truck. maybe you could do a video on buying tool's at your local part's suppler so they can see they don't alway's gotta spend there cash on the truck.👍👍👍

You have weird timing. Today I was replacing the electromagnetic transfer case clutch on one of the newer RAV4s as I work for Toyota. It dawned on me that I'm always installing axle or Cam seals and I never actually have the right tool. I'm getting this blue pnt kit now thank you very much

These kits are great when the seal is flush with opening, but this is not the case as many seals are set at a precise depth, what can you do when one specs calls for a 7.0mm depth +- 0.5mm and another calls for 8.0mm below the lip? besides trying to find the dealer only driver which only has a one time use.

Missing a key piece, many oem seal installers include a flange on the outside. To prevent over installing the seal

Good one I have a whole set of those axle nut socket’s that I use more for seal driving then for Axle nuts. I have that blue points set it does work real 👍🏻 have used old races also and whatever you can find sometimes that fits to be able to install seals

Snap on has a kit you can snap your ball joint tool cups on to it and bang away. That's only if you are already invested in snap-on bj press kit.
