Compass has more ground clearance than the Forester. I quiet like the Subaru but the interior has always let them down, it's boring to look at. If they were the only two cars I could choose I'd have the Compass, at least there's a bit of charm about it.
Hi, Jim in Australia, thinking of buying a Compass, north south east west that's how they read there maps, there major highways and big city streets are set out that way.
The EPA and the car industry made a big deal in 2008 about truth in MPG reporting and how the industry would "now report true mileage numbers." In fact, Consumer Reports, KBB, and Edmunds, all report mileage as pre and post 2008. Before buying my 2013 Jeep Compass, I expressed serious concerns over the sticker claiming only 21 City and 26 Highway. The salesman and sales manager of the Larry Miller Jeep dealership assured me that 2008 had changed everything to the point where mileage was now being underreported on EPA stickers--people were now getting better mileage than the stickers! I brushed that off as simply sales bullsh!+, but considered that it at least meant I could believe the EPA figures. I could have never anticipated the resulting nightmare of my purchase. After my first 2 tanks AVERAGED ONLY 13 MPG, I went ballistic. I had decided against the Compass at 26 MPG and in reality it was getting 13?!?! Hell, I owned a frikkin 4WD Jeep Cherokee almost 20 years ago that got better mileage than that. WTH! My next shock was finding the sticker in my glove box didn't say 21 and 26. Somehow the compass I ended up with had a sticker reading only 20 & 23. Not that there's really much difference. Bottom line- the dealership would do nothing. In fact, they tried to pass it off as the way I must be pressing on the pedal. Yeah, that must be it. I've had over 30 cars in my life. I passed a million miles years ago. Suddenly, I've changed the way I drive, just when I bought this jeep compass. Idiots. I will never, ever, trust jeep. I will never buy another jeep as long as I live. My kids and grandkids will never buy jeeps. My business customers who ask about my jeep photo on the wall with the red X on it will never buy a jeep. This experience has made me an enemy of anything jeep. My loathing of jeep is beyond words.
He's right, the 2.2 CRD is a Mercedes engine. It wouldn't put me off buying one though, generally CRD means Common Rail Diesel and that technology was developed by Mercedes
All american cars I've been in in the UK have had compasses in them even ones from 1995. Must be an american thing. Shame Jeep just get the styling right on this model refresh and they announce they're axing it next year and replacing it with a model based on a Fiat. I hope it doesn't look anything like the new 500 MPV. God they must have brought in the previous Multipla MPV designer for that one.
Indeed Mercedes used to give a lot of parts over to Jeep but now that Fiat run the show you shouldn't have a problem with the engines. Anyway big diesels are what Mercedes are good at, they invented them
I had one in Canada and it was not great at all. Transmission bearings were replaced 2 times during warranty. Car was totaled and I am glad that I had replacement insurance. I wont go to jeep any more. These guys are unable to make a comfortable reliable car like toyota.
@zasubg Thanks very much, I will ask Hyundai about the Santa Fe but I don't think there's a test car available plus I think they are a bit scared of me :D However Kia make the Sorento which is basically the same car but better in all the ways that matter!
Its not THAT American...Diesel engine, is now from Mercedes, used to be a VW...petrol units are World engines, like Kia/Hyundai/Mitsubishi, and the 6spd auto unit is from Hyundai, oh, the chassis is the same as the Mitsubishi Outlander...and even used by Citroen, Peugeot and the Lancer Evo.
I’ve had my 2011 Compass since new and it just gave me 27-29 mpg on a 4,000 mile roundtrip here in the USA last month. Very economical and it has been very reliable that I don’t want to give it up.

just bought a used 09 compass 4x4, but its 2.4l gas. 2 weeks now, so far so good. love it.
