Okay, that tip about the ketchup pumps is fantastic since I just started buying my casting supplies in bulk, so now I have to deal with 45 lb jugs of flexible resin and 40 pound containers of silicone. I just need to find the right sized pumps for 5 gallon jugs...

Brilliant tips, i dont use a glass work top but i stretch bin bag over it when using polyurethane resin, does not stick to it at all, it's like Teflon to resin, and for the surface for putting the sticks, i cut the base out of a resin container, then once I'm done with the next container, I make a new one

I use boards and mold straps to hold my molds together. I also pressure cast everything, molds and castings. I don't get bubbles.
I have 12 pressure tanks of various sizes, including some rated for 150psi at 650F. Dunno what would have been sprayed from them under those conditions. At the 60psi I use, they'll never fail.
When I started doing resin casting around 16~17 years ago, I tried vacuuming the silicone and resin then casting at ambient pressure, I got a lot of failures, wasted lots of material. I have a Gast rotary vane vacuum pump that's sat unused for years. By the time the bubbles were sucked out of the silicone or resins, they would be well on their way to curing, leaving little time to fill the mold.
Another issue when not doing pressure casting is sharp, inside corners. They will trap air and cause bubbles in silicone and resin.
A quickie page I did a while ago on making a pressure cast, 2 part, silicone mold. Since I did this one, I've switched from using shiny surface corrugated cardboard for mold forms to covering plain corrugated cardboard with clear packing tape. partsbyemc.com/pub/mold-making.htm
The equipment to get started with pressure casting will cost under $200. Harbor Freight has small air compressors for $56.99 and Item #66839 is a 2.5 gallon pressure tank for $99.99. (Subscribe to their e-mails and you'll eventually end up with discount coupons.) You'll also need a second pressure gauge, a 1/4 turn ball valve and a quick connect adapter for the air hose. There are some how-to's on the web for the changes to those paint tanks to use them for pressure casting.
The Prop Builder's Molding & Casting Handbook by Thurston James should be owned by everyone doing this stuff. While the materials demonstrated are mostly obsolete now, *they still work*, and the techniques are applicable to newer materials.

Like your presentation. Short and to the point!!! But would like to see them longer. I would like advice/instructions on how to hang three objects suspended in resin. So would be about a 2-2 1/2 cup size mold. But how to get these objects suspended evenly. They are uneven shapes. Maybe I have asked the wrong TH-camr but had to try. Thanks

karen devanney Thanks for the questions, Yes paper is stable enough to pour into, think paper cup. There are many types of pigments, just make sure they are not water based and recommended for urethane resin. I don't have a preferred brand that I am recommending at this time. Different resins have different set times, so it depends on the resin you are using. Good luck

My first trick is 25 sec in. Put your scales in a plastic bag, then if you spill some resin you just throw the bag away.

Please describe the ketchup pumps - do you add a hose inside the container as an extension inside the container? Are the caps standard size to fit these types of gallon (or more) containers?

If I may ask a question, if I'm doing small resin pieces and want to add weight to them, what would I add? I have tried Ure-fil 3 (ceramic) but the weight difference is minimal. What is it that Hallmark and Jim Shore use to make their casts have their heftiness to them?

I have a question. I am making a large resin cuboid with over 8 litres of resin. I don't think it's going to fit in a pressure chamber and I can't have any bubbles in it. I am also scared of my resin cracking when I pour (as it happened on my first attempt). My question is: what do you suggest I do for a larger resin quantitity?

Dunno, how big your tank is....use a resin with a slow cure time to reduce heat so it is less likely to crack. Good luck

WOW!!!!! Some amazing tips!!! I especially like the silicone pad, never thought of that. I don't wargame, but I do like to build and paint models and mini's so these bases are great. Heavy and thick, no more super gluing washers to the bases anymore!! I have a mold of 24mm, 33mm, and a big ol' box shape 2"x2" of bases. I always keep it handy when I'm pouring resin. Can you suggest a mold material for that is highly durability and has a long life once opened?? I use Smooth-On Oom Moo 300 and I get very mixed results. What I mean by that is:
1. Sometimes my molds come out perfect, strong, and seem to last forever(even tho the resin I use heats up hot). Other molds I've made I get maybe.... 5-6 casts before the mold just falls apart. I'm talking smooth surfaces, no under cuts.
2. Is oom moo 300 the right resin for me? Lately I have been tinkering with this product called The Blue Stuff. You heat it and boom mold away. It's really great in that it replicates detail great, reusable and doesn't seem to stick to anything. Even itself! You can make 2 part molds with the same material in about 10 minutes! You only get 6 sticks, which is perfect for small stuff, but I want to make casts of larger rock work or other surfaces and OOM MOO 300 just doesn't hold up that long.
3. When you open the bottle of the casting material you have about a week before the pink(whatever part) becomes solid and the blue is still liquid. If you haven't used it before it is a 2 part mold material that comes in 2 pint jars. It's really simple 1:1 ratio which is great, but the shelf life really sucks.

Rob's Hobbys Thanks glad you liked the video. Feel free to share on social media. I have never worked with the products you described, so I can't say much about them. Honestly not a huge Smooth on user. I use mainly Innovation Polymers products and silicones from silicone inc.
In general terms I would say that: if you are having mixed results try a different product. I never have unpredictable results with the innovative products, just google them and you fill find them. Best of luck and thanks for the comment.

Get a digital scale. One that weighs up to 5KG in 0.1 gram increments. It won't be cheap but it'll pay for itself in molds that last and castings that don't fail because you'll have the mix ratio accurate. Most resin manufacturers have buried somewhere on a data sheet the mix by weight ratio for their products.
I uses Silicone's Inc P60 for all my molds, casting mostly Smooth-On Crystal Clear 202, clear or colored with their transpararent and/or opaque colors. I use Mann 400 release spray *every casting*. I wipe the mold with a clean cloth, blow with compressed air, then spray fresh release. Every so often I'll wash the molds with warm, soapy water. I have some molds over 15 years old, still producing good castings. If I need to paint the item or will be casting more resin on the item (such as for the 2-color Hudson shift knobs I make) I'll use Mann 200. The 200 can be cleaned off but doesn't leave a glossy surface. Not an issue on those knobs because I sand and polish them.
Don't bother with tin cure silicones. The price isn't that much less than platinum cure. They shrink more than platinum cure (many plat cures have essentially zero shrinkage). Tin cure molds can deteriorate just sitting around. Platinum cure molds can last for many years if treated right. Tin cure molds need to be post cured, heated, to finish off the curing process.

00dom00 2mm is standard wall thickness for products that I design, thats my rule of thumb starting point. Thanks for the comment, feel free to share on social media as well.

I've just started to watch videos on how to use epoxy resin for jewelry and/or craft projects and have a question. I have seen how they make jewelry pieces and then sink in hardware to make them pendants, earrings or dangle beads. So I thought why can't you just make beads to string up for jewelry too? And I am trying to find a video or instructions on how to put something in the middle of the mold to create the hole for beading. I thought of a few things you could use but I can't think of a to be able to remove it after the epoxy hardens. Do you have a trick, tip or idea that can help me? Thank you, Brandi

Hey man, thanks for the video! I'm search for an answer to a resin question... I want to dip some objects in resin so they have a nice coating on them... and maybe suspend some stuff in pendant-like shapes like a teardrop or whatever...
Let's say you had a... um... an odd-shaped trinket you wanted to coat with resin... I imagine it's easy enough to dip it... but the how would you hang it to dry? And, here's my other concern... I've done the hang dry method with paint and there always seems to be a blob at the bottom where the drips collected. Is that inevitable and I should just plan on sanding and buffing?
I really would like to create droplets or spheres that contain an object I can later turn into suncatchers or jewelry or whatever... but I can't think of a way to do it without a mold. And the dipping thing.. have some cool trinkets and stuff that would be great with a decent resin coating but I want the resin to take the shape of the thing that I dipped. .. not have a flat edge or seams, etc...
Any advice you could spare me? You clearly know your stuff!

I want to make rectangular resin art pieces. I am guessing I can make a mold in just about any size (as seen on another of your videos.) Let's say I want to make a mold that is 9"X12"X3". I would want to make the finished project to sit in front of a window or other light source.
1.What kinds of coloring agents should I use to make the colors bright and transparent? I want toe viewer to see the colors as the blend when overlapped.
2. Is it possible to pour the mold and then let it dry partially, then add another layer, so that I can layer my colors, perhaps make about 5 colored areas between 6 layers, each .5" deep?

Hi eric i am new to resin i have never used it. I want to make resin beads for a boho beaded door curtain i am making. I am using silicone to make the moulds but what can i use to go in the centre of the mould to create a pre-hole so when the bead sets i dont have to drill a hole into it? Can i stick a metal skewer or plastic stirrer or chop stick? Would really appreciate ur advise please? I am a new subriber from over the pond in the uk. X
A small metal rod would be good, use some release agent like wax to keep it from sticking to the resin
Dear Eric, I have several questions about an art project I have, I want to encapsulate cracked ground soil into resin or acrylic, im not sure what materials to use, as well how to do it, the soil is on the ground, I want to leave the most natural view of the cracked soul. Should I make a delimitation with boards cut into the ground? sides and base? and then pour the acrylic for the material to absorb it? or what do you recommend? That depends on the durometer of the resin softer resins could easily be penetrated

Depends on the resin of course, but I would use a few coats of paste wax that will give you the most detail. DO some tests first to make sure all the ingredients are compatible of course. Good luck, post on social media and tag me when you post.

No food coloring is water-based and that will not work with urethane it needs to be alcohol-based

Make sure you are actully using silicone, the only thing that really stick to silicone is silicone, not much else sticks to it

alan kirkbright, possibly, depends on the resin used, could be epoxy...you might be better off sanding and polishing the resin.

What do I use to color the resin?
I have a question about casting a thinker mold? I have tried a little mold that I purchased that looks like a crystal about 3” tall and 1.5” wide but i filled it half full and the resin heated up so much it bubbled and started smoking. Am i doing something wrong?
The Straders what kind of resin? sounds like a polyester resin...use a resin with a slower set time like a urethane resin, particularly important with parts that have a large mass, if its polyester use less hardener.
Eric Strebel i believe it was an epoxy resin. It mixes 1 to 1 workable time of about 35 minutes cures to touch overnight.

Can you put resin in side a wax mold because I have a mold of my hands but it made out of wax and I wanted to know if it be good to do it to it to keep the hands from melting
Use plaster instead
I don't' think a wax mold would work. The curing process is exothermic - it generates heat. That would melt the wax before the resin has solidified.
