    Guys please make sure you're using gloves and a mask anytime you're working resin, not just if it's a lot. Neglecting safety precautions when working with resin is a large cause of chemical pneumonia and lung cancer it is so so important to make sure you're safe. I really wish they had used proper equipment and mentioned this more in this video because even if they're ok with taking those risks, many people don't understand how important that is and will unintentionally put themselves at risk

    • @scary-sounds
      @scary-sounds 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good that I'll be taking extra precautions if i ever get involved with resin. Got any other safety tips to share?

    • @LazyNVersions
      @LazyNVersions ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scary-sounds Now they put a ton of safety tips into their resin videos because people didn’t understand how dangerous it can be, personally I don’t know them all but definitely read the instructions and warnings on any resin you buy because common safety issues will be put there. Again, that’s all I’ve personally got for tips on this and they have more safety info going on in later resin videos

    • @hotpinkcrayolas
      @hotpinkcrayolas หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had a really scary reaction to using resin because I bought a KIDS craft kit that had no warnings. It's bloody dangerous stuff. Glad E&K (who I discovered after!) are far better at showing the safety side nowadays x

  • @EvanAndKatelyn
    @EvanAndKatelyn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +90

    EDIT: After 3 years of working with resin we've learned a TON! The most important thing we didn't emphasize in this video is respiration safety. Wear a mask rated for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when mixing epoxy or resin (especially when inside). Read the safety sheets for your resin. Also use a respirator rated for fine particulate when sanding epoxy!

    Please use gloves and the respirator through the whole process with resin (mixing--sanding) especially when making how to videos. Even when mixing resin it releases vapors that can cause reactions and chemical pneumonia. You may choose to opt out but kids watch these videos and they need to see the safe way to handle these chemicals.

    The wrinkles are more from the alcohol inks(gold mostly), as it doesn't sink down like the other colors. Silver and some black alcohol inks will stay mostly on top.
    Evan was doing the "Petri Dish" method. On some spots, you can see where he mixed the white in with the other colors and didn't get the effect that he got on the sides of his first pour.
    Also, if you plan on doing more with alcohol inks, I would suggest looking at the Ranger Adirondacks Alcohol inks. But still use the Piñata white, it is denser than the other white alcohol inks.

      I'm almost sure you could. but I think it would be quite expensive. There are some kind of flooring and table / balcony product that is a resin, less expensive, and sometimes, less clear. With a proper set of silicone molds you could do your tiles. As a tip, faster cure resin is typically cheaper than slow cure. Also we haven't found the additives /colors to be too expensive because you use such a little amount to add color. You could also buy cheap hex tiles and just coat them with resin to get the colorful look, but not have a fully resin tile. Good luck!

    Watching you guys make stuff like this makes me want to get moved so I can get started with all this sorta stuff myself...it looks so fun!! I have no space where I'm at, so I'm kinda stuck at one of those points where I have the time and want to do things, but my ability to is low for several reasons. You two ever think of making resin boxes? Like, make five same-sized square pucks, then a bigger lid to set on top, then attach the five same-sized pucks together to make the box with glue or something, and then set the lid up on top. That seems like you could do some pretty neat stuff with it, especially if you put holes or sections you can see through to the inside. Not hard to modify to make a neat little lightbox type thing, either, if you stick them in a wood base...could make all kinds of shapes of resin pucks, then cut holes just smaller on the outside of the wooden shade, then the inside with a more well fitting spot for the resin.

    • @EvanAndKatelyn

    Did my first resin pours last night. Idk why but I was so nervous going into it. But once I started mixing, it was rather calming lol. I haven't taken my pieces out of their molds yet. Soon ❤ I really would like to try the alcohol pigments. It looks so cool!

    Awesome job on the experiments and video, you guys definitely achieved some cool effects! 😍👍👍👊👊.... 🤔 I wonder how it would turn out using this technique to make custom decorative inserts on a tile counter top or back splash? .... mosaic wall art, or mosaic tile top for maybe a little outdoor table made of some welded 1/2 inch square steel bar?! 😉😉 ..... Would also make for some really cool coasters! 😃 ..... that Supervisor was so helpful with all of those tips! 😁 .... Not so helpful with the mixing cups though....😂

      I think it'd be really cool to do for backsplash inserts or furniture inlays! We're currently using these guys for coasters and can confirm, we like em :) Haha yes the Supervisor is helpful but only when she feels like it...

    You can also use your scrap pieces of plywood and use them as well. Just make sure to tape the under side and use something(the little cups) to have the board off of the workspace. You also don't need a blowtorch to get rid of the bubbles, a heatgun works just as well and it can make some really cool looking effects(cells,lacing,etc..) the heatgun will also make the resin more viscous from heating up. If you just want the bubbles popped, use the lowest setting.
    You can also spray 90-99% alcohol over the resin to remove bubbles.
    I would recommend to paint(I just use spray paint) the wood first before using it as a canvas. If you don't, some of the resin will soak into the wood and you may not have enough to cover your entire piece. I would also recommend to put some resin down before you start as it will allow the other resin to flow easier than just on a painted board.

      EvanAndKatelyn Forgot to say that you can also get the silicone round and square cake molds in a variety of dimensions(I think the largest is the 10" round cake mold) and use that instead of wood.
      Also if you put a clear topcoat over your resin art, you will have a better looking piece. It adds depth to the colors and the figure that the resin does.
      I'll see if I can send you some pictures on patreon

    If you discover tiny surface pits after curing, many resins are compatable with clear nail polish (do a test ideally). I have used it to hide imperfections in the past. Any techniques to avoid dry sanding (and creating unhealthy breathing conditions) are worth considering,

    I just started experimenting with resin art as well. It was hard to tell from the video, but resin looks 1000x times better with a good finish. If your molds aren't perfectly smooth you get a dull looking coaster.

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @brandonsaffell4100

      A super glossy clear coat works well, however I have had some issues with it chipping off on some pieces. A very thin epoxy coating (XTC-3D?!) is the most sturdy, but almost the most time consuming and very hard to get a good finish. Plastic polish is also an option, certainly the most labor intensive of those three.
      I recently spray coated a piece to a nice glossy finish and then remade the mold using the glossy piece. That actually worked amazingly well. Obviously it has a pretty big time and monetary cost.

    You can use your paint pens directly on the silicone then pour after it's dried, the resin will embed it into the surface. Or pour a thin layer of clear and let it cure then paint that then add more resin with a background.
