    Here in the Netherlands we don’t have a real winter anymore. But in the past, a long time ago, for me in the seventy's, we had a coal stove. My mother lay a brick on it to get warm and then wrapped it with a towel. This was placed at the foot of the bed to keep our feet warm at night. When your feet are cold your whole body is cold!

    Our first winter here and am now just learning about the dry rooms in winter! I was so worried about too much humidity and didn’t expect the opposite problem. I find myself coughing all night from a dry throat. And with dry skin, ugh. Also having a hard time finding lotion that’s strong enough. I welcome anything that comes close to Aveeno or Cetaphil excema cream found in the U.S. Otherwise, coming from CA and FL, the winter hasn’t felt too intense so far.

    There are many houses and apartment buildings from reinforced concrete house partition walls and floors and the outer walls (front and back) are made of cavity walls where the outer wall is brick masonry and the inner wall is wooden framework with insulation. The inner wall is a prefabricated house-wide element with the window frames already in it. It is fixed at the concrete partition walls and floors and sealed off by PUR foam and bituminous tape. There is (prefabricated) gypsum sheeting at the inside, so it looks and feels as drywall. It is a fast way of getting the house or apartment closed off from weather (wind- en waterdicht) so finishing can start early.

    My apartment was build in 1961 and it has single window panes in the bedroom but not in the living room without any heating on it gets about 5 degrees celsius and with that comes a nice ice cold outside wall so keeping the heat in is really difficult. Most of my neighbors are retired over the age of 65+ so they all use space heaters just to get the rooms to a normal acceptable temperature.

    I am here to defend Michelle's Chucks! It's all in the socks. In the winter, I wear merino wool socks with my Chucks - of varying thicknesses/density according to temperature -- and my feet stay warm and dry. The shoes may get completely soaked but they dry out really quickly. And they're washable. It really is an effective system, even if it does sound counter-intuitive to non-Chuck wearing Dutchies (to be).
    I worked this out living in Glasgow one winter.

    A mattress heater seems like a really big thing to get when you can also buy a hot water bottle for 5€ at hema and fill that up. I don't usually put one in the bed before bedtime, but you can certainly do that. If i'm really cold I get one for my feet and it heats up the bed in no time. Just hot water from the tap in one bottle is enough for hours of warmth. It is a bit smaller though, so I tend to shift it around a bit as I lie in bed, but so long as you feet are warm you don't get too cold overall.
    When I was younger I got sleeping socks as well. My great-grandmother knit them for me, super soft wool knit in a lacy pattern with a really soft ribbon to tie them around the ankle if needed. They're not meant to be walked on, the wool is the delicate type for expensive sweaters or baby clothes etc, so they're really only to sleep in, they'd wear out too fast otherwise.
    Wool socks in general would work too. Real wool is best, acrylic yarn is okay but not as good, and regular socks barely do anything tbh.
    We also have a duvet stuffed with wool. It's warm and cosy in the winter, and the slightly thinner summer duvet (also stuffed with wool) is great in the summer, we don't overheat. Wool is great at temperature regulation in general.
    Heating the house is important, yes, you don't want the temperature inside to go down too much, especially with the risk of moisture damage and mold. I believe the minimum temperature is about 15 degrees. So we have set our heater to heat to about 20 degrees during the day, and 15 at night. If you let your house cool down too much it takes much more energy to heat it back up every time. It's much more energy efficient to keep it somewhat warm. Of course, not if you aren't home at all for example, but in general. But like you said, wearing warm clothes in general is much more energy efficient.
    I wonder at the difference in isolation between the US and the Netherlands. Like, most of the homes I see from the US have the front door open into the living room. I have never seen that in the Netherlands, there is always an entrance. No matter how small in between the living area and the front door. That seems like a cold (or heat) leak in a house. Every time you open the door the warmth just gets out (or in). If there is a space with a door in between the cold outside and the warm living room to act as a buffer that won't happen as much. Like, sure, there will be some cold that gets in, no house is airtight, but there will be a much smaller effect on the entire house, than if you open the door into the living room (that is connected to the kitchen and dining room). Or are entrances like that more common in colder parts of the US?

    • @buncharted2
      @buncharted2  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      they're more common in old homes in the US, like pre-1940s homes, but newer homes might have a "mudroom" on the side or in the back which functions very similarly
      we have this here and we have one of those little things you slip under the door to further insulate the entrance area and the living room, which is great, it keeps our living room super cozy

    Most houses are insulated quite well actually, most walls of Dutch houses are double and in the spaces in between are fiber glass wool insulation. Mostly double windows but these days even triple glass or in my case “kunststof kozijnen” or plastic window frames ( sounds cheaper in English) fitted with super isolated glass. My walls have had extra insulation added and underneath my house I had extra insulation placed. I’m not an exception! Also added solar panels.
    I have a middle house and only use 400m3 gas a year!
    Mid winter day still has about 7 to 8 hours daylight but if the day is gloomy it feels semi dark much longer.

      > Most houses are insulated quite well actually
      If privately owned, rental is a mess.
      Most before the 40's houses are either upgraded or privately owned. The 50's and 60' construction, mostly rental, has only recently been "upgraded" (started in the 90's and continues to now as it's only done when new renters go in). And upgraded means absolutely minimal needed. This means only replacing single glass to minimal needed, which explains why I have three different window types (ancient normal double, double with special stuff and one tiny high efficiency one) each upgraded to the minimum required at the time.
      Note for renters: if they come to record your energy level (the AAA to G scheme for rating the house as energy efficient), make sure they record the shittiest window. They can take any they like as an example and in my case they were looking to take the single high efficiency glass windows which is about 5% of the total. This makes a difference in the rating, and if it is sufficiently low the rental company might be required to upgrade, in my case they also wanted to ignore the geiser which kicked the rating down to D from C. This also makes a difference in the allowed rental points for maximum price.

      @irenehabes-quene2839 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@NoNameForNone actually in the town I live there is a large suburb with many rental homes from the early 80’s, (just like my house 1983). In the last two years they have been extensively upgraded, new roofs, with about 25 cm insulation ( I saw the insulation pads), new roof tiles, dormers placed ( dakkapel ), new windows and glass put in, and probably more work done that I couldn’t see.
      My brother lives in a social rent home, part of the same suburb. He had new central heating system put in as well as floor and wall isolation. ( polystyrene particles put underneath the floor and isolation pumped into the wall. He had had new windows a few years back.
      The privately owned houses can be spotted because they still have old roof tiles that lie about 15 cm lower due to less insulation.

    If you have central heating (most homes have that) with one or more radiators per room you can (partially) shut off the radiators that don’t need to heat up as much as others. This will restrict (or shut off) the the hot waterflow to those radiators. The radiators that haven’t been (partially) shut off will get nice and hot, while the ones that have been restricted will stay cold or get luke warm only. This’ll save you money. Btw if you do turn off certain radiators DON’T shut them off completely. Keep turning the thingy for shutting off the radiator until it’s completely shut off but then open it up again for half a turn. It’s better to have at least a little bit of waterflow going in every radiator than to have some shut off completely with stagnant water in them.

    If that's a recently built home it's unlikely to be made of wood. The inside of the utilities closet is usually panelled with wood in order to mount the appliances on; are you sure that's not what you saw? New wooden buildings do exist in the Netherlands ("houtskeletbouw"), but it tends to be expensive detached houses. The majority of houses in the Netherlands are concrete (poured, prefab, or aerated concrete blocks) inside and brick outside.

      Well, there used to be a yearly race for marathon ice skaters in one of the nordic countries. I honestly don't think the original 11 cities race will happen again. Part is climate change the other part is the reluctance to organise it again... Infrastructure and ice plays a part and the willingness of various people to even put time and money in.

    Houses are typically build of brick. As in, actual brick, not a layer of decorative faux bricks over a wood frame. Very few houses are made of wood actually, most are from brick. There is likely to be some wood holding up floors or roofs, but that's it. Really old houses tend to have way thicker walls that insulate really well actually, brick holds onto warmth a lot. Cheaper houses from the 1800s will have thinner walls. Houses from the 1950s until the 1970s often have thinner walls and lower quality materials. Starting in the 80s the houses were better insulated again. Most of the time the insulation is a double wall. Which works really well.

    Most homes have double walls. You can extra material in between those walls for more insulation. Compared to the UK, insulation of Dutch homes is not that bad. It is just that Dutch homes tend to be bigger (and have bigger rooms specifically).

    @23:08 heating a room using a space heater.
    Those are pretty inefficient. If you are allowed by the landlord it would be better to get a split airconditioning unit (inside and outside unit) installed. Not to cool the house down in summer but to heat the room it's installed in up in winter. An Airco is basically an air to air heatpump and way cheaper then the Hybrid Air to water heatpumps that are advertised and promoted often in the Netherlands. (about 1/10th of the price) and they have about the same efficiency in heating.

    On daylight: never overlook that the Netherlands are located way closer to the North Pole than Seatle; hence less daylight than you were used to.
    On isolation: ever since the late 1970's isolation between the walls (inside the "spouwmuur"), and under the roof, of newly built houses and apartments is required by law. That is now more than 50 years... But only if you're in an old house where the owner never retrofitted "spouwmuurisolatie" it can be draughty or cold - though I heared you saying you have double glazed windows.
    On feeling cold in the house: one thing perhaps new to you but every Dutch person knows: dress to the season. Meaning apart from underwear, shirt, (long!) pants, socks from late autumn to early spring wear a vest/sweater as well, I mean the woolly knitwear ones (NL: "trui"). What I see on the your video is summer dress: no leg cover, thin T-shirt. What you choose to wear is up to you of course, so no offence intended, but dressed like that way doesn't really makes complaining about cold credible. Just saying... And don't overlook warm "pantoffels"😀!
