In my opinion the producers are every bit that's wrong with the Industry as they only care about what tests well and what focus groups say the audience likes despite the fact that a lot of the time humans don't know what they like or why they like it.

    I never pictured the Mistress of Mystery has anything else than a badass older woman, personally. Her background story is too rich for a younger character, and she has a sophistication and a confidence about her that I can't picture on a 20 or 30 years-old. Too bad the entertainment industry, even in real life, seems to discard women as soon as they reach 40 until they're 70.

    ...They could always require Claire to dye her hair brown. They could also try dubbing Shannon's voice over Claire's (although that might not work as well just due to logistics. There's no such thing as a perfect dub).
    But generally speaking, I do agree with the ladies in the office. I think they're more in tune with what audiences would expect to see vs what "tests well" with general audiences. Too many producers just check the boxes and never bother making sure their movies/tv shows actually makes sense or have a solid story.

    I loved The Silver Shroud side-quest! It reminded me so much of the episode in the Animated Batman series: "The Grey Ghost" It was an episode where they got Adam West involved in the episode to voice-act as a fictional actor in Bruce Wayne's favorite TV show: The Grey Ghost. Adam West has had a history as playing the role of Batman in the 1960's Batman live-action show.

    I feel like Hubris Comics was deliberately padded out as a location. A comic book store that just so happens to have a comic book/script writing facility AND a sound stage upstairs? The whole Silver Shroud quest is cool and all but...really?
    I understand that they needed to pad it out to make it more substantial as a "dungeon" but I think it would have been cooler to have a comic book store where you obtain a key item or something and then have the TV studio as separate locations. Imagine exploring that!

    • @-DeScruff
      @-DeScruff 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The TV studio I'll agree. Unless these were silent TV shows, theres no way you could make a TV show in that busy of a building.
      But I think the script writing area kinda makes sense... It make more sense if Hubris Comics was just this tiny local comic company.

    I enjoyed your "what did we learn?" comments. But I have to say, I side with the girls. The fellas were looking at cold hard numbers and, in a lot of cases, I feel like these additions that "test well" really end up taking the heart out of projects with long history and a solid (rabid?) fan base behind them.

    • @theandroidartist5897
      @theandroidartist5897 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's what I thought, the test audiences liked what they added, but Vivien knew it wouldn't fly with the target audience and jumped ship before she had a chance to go down with it. With how far the show changed from the comic, the fans may have turned away in just a few months. I think Hubris Comics gets the Corporate Darwin Award of Fallout 4 for fixing something that wasn't broken(And managing to actually break it in the process)

    I LOVE reading the books in Skyrim. I even have a mod that allows time to pass while I'm reading so I can simulate spending an evening with a good book and I do it nightly in-game. But for some reason I never want to take the time to read the terminals in Fallout 4. Maybe it's because I love the interconnected lore and history of the Elder Scrolls universe, but that the collections of assorted gossip and corporate drama in Fallout don't seem to have the same epic feel to them. Or maybe it's because I can role-play reading in Skyrim during my down-time next to a warm fire, but I can't see myself reading a terminal in Fallout with ghouls and raiders hiding in the next room.
    In any case, because of this, your lore series is greatly appreciated. I can get all the stories without having to read them. Thanks Ox!

    There is an interesting parallel here in this story to fans of the Fallout universe lore in regards to Fallout 4. The talk of "keeping to the lore", the disappointment of a "voice actor protagonist" not being what the "purist" expected. Several other points I am sure can be drawn together about this relating to keeping the lore pure. Also there is some nods to the legal battles to previous owners of the Fallout name. Maybe that is a stretch but I caught a lot of subliminal parallels here. That's my two caps.

      Chi-Bowl how do the hubologist have a alien blaster is the better question.

    • @ReverendSyn
      @ReverendSyn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Zetans are presumably known of pre-war. As in the museum there's a mural of a lunar war being fought against them. The writers probably visited the museum as kids or something.
      As for the Hubologists having an alien blaster, some Hubologist could simply have stumbled upon one in a crashed ship the same way your character did in Fallout 3.
      Since Hubology is based upon Scientology, which featured a fictional alien race as it's basis, perhaps Dick Hubbel literally WAS in contact with Zetans before the war.

    • @Hunter_Johnson
      @Hunter_Johnson 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Zetans were only known by top government officials, the lunar war was a conflict most likely between the People's Republic of China and the U.S.. The Enclave, which was a political elite military organisation pre-war made sure that aliens weren't known to the public.
      The "Zetans" was a made up species name by pre-war crack pot conspiracy theorists. I mean, the way aliens look in the Fallout series is based off of fiction of the 40s-60s of what movie producers/writers would think aliens looked like, so it sort of makes sense for the writers to choose that to depict the alien stories.
      fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Alien

    • @ReverendSyn
      @ReverendSyn 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mural in the very PUBLIC museum clearly demonstrates that other people besides the govt knew of the Aliens

    • @Hunter_Johnson
      @Hunter_Johnson 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ReverendSyn No, no it doesn't. It displays an American soldier/astronaught fighting on the moon, which was part of some conflict shortly before or duing the Great War.
      "It is not known from what system or what planet they come from. They have orbited and observed the Earth with two known motherships (Zeta and an unnamed one) at least since the 1600s in Earth's solar system, but humans had little real awareness of them and less evidence of their existence.
      Before the 1960s, only "crackpot" groups such as Quaere Verum believed in them, thinking that aliens existed but that evidence of their existence was covered up by a government conspiracy.
      However, after the mysterious disappearances (abducted by aliens in Zeta in fact) of the USSA space capsule Clarabella 7 and the pilot, astronaut Colonel Hartigan, during the 1960s Space Race, the aliens became recognized by national leaders. It is said that alien technology was the basis of many of the Enclave's more exotic and impressive weaponry and robotics.
      Toy manufacturers such as Wilson Automatoys weren't immune to these suspicions.
      The pre-War United States government was said to keep its alien specimens and technology mainly in Area 51 (such as a flying saucer that was later re-captured by aliens, but crashed in California probably during a flight sometime after the Great War, instantly killing the two alien pilots)"
      "Quaere Verum was a small pre-War organization, composed of three known members and one possible double agent, Aldwin Morley.
      The group's primary purpose appears to have been exposing "The Conspiracy", a supposed government coverup of the usage of alien technology as a basis for their own. Quaere Verum attempted to prove this by using a plasma pistol they believed was clearly inspired by alien technology.
      Quaere Verum was swiftly eradicated by the Federal government not long after the MPLX Novasurge prototype plasma pistol was stolen from them by the group.
      It was generally considered to be a crackpot group for their belief in the existence of an alien conspiracy."

    This story reminded me of a lot of the fan reactions to how the Joker was cast back when the Dark Knight came out, people wanting Mark Hamill to play the role or at least dub over the lines, or how the character would be wearing make up rather than being permanently bleached by chemicals. I had some friends who thought Jack Nicholson couldn't be topped, but after the film came out there was no question. Heath Ledger won over fans and has gone down as one of the best villain portrayals in movies to date.
    Somehow I doubt the Silver Shroud would have worked out the same though, TDK came from incredible artistic integrity and a clear vision as to what that Batman series should be, meanwhile the Shroud show was being put together by committee being shown numbers and goofy things they would add that had no real artistic intentions behind them.

    • @Kanelle88
      @Kanelle88 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't like Heath Ledger's joker. Quite frankly I think people think his performance was this great thing because the dude died shortly afterwards (and they feel bad saying otherwise) or they just don't know the character. The joker is a character that is having the time of his life when people are dying or he's in a life and death situation. Heath Ledger's joker quietly chuckled a couple times and was angry the rest of his performance. Did he come across unhinged... Yeah, a little but this is the joker not twoface or the penguin.

    • @Catkeeper
      @Catkeeper 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kanelle88 Well that's pretty uncharitable and presumptive. Ledger's death may have won him the Oscar but people genuinely love his performance, myself included, and the portrayal has influenced back onto the comics and further adaptations.
      As for not knowing the Joker you're greatly simplifying the character there, both in terms of the comic book character and Ledger's performance. The story itself took a lot from the initial appearance of the character, in which he was an incredibly lethal, and punctual serial killer and terrorist, and The Killing Joke, in which Joker's whole raison d'etre is to prove all it takes is for one bad day to break someone from sanity and into madness. In the movie he succeeds on a micro level with Harvey Dent, but fails on a macro level with the people of Gotham.
      Furthermore he was not just chuckling quietly and being angry. He was an anarchist for sure, and violently anti-society, but he comes across to me as more aloof, but more to get under people's skin.
      As for his laugh, you're just wrong there buddy.
      Feel free to not like something other's do, but when you don't try not to assume you can read people's minds in the process.

    In my opinion, live-action versions of comics/manga usually fair better if they are loyal to their source material. I believe this is because of two things. One, fans of the comics will become fans of the movie/show due to nostalgia and two, comics often have amazing writing and dialogue that altering it completely often results to a half-baked or downright awful story. My simple example is the Batman Begins Trilogy and Batman VS Superman movies. Batman Begins and its sequels were successful mainly because it captured the spirit of the modern Batman even if they changed some of the story to fit the big screen. Compare that to BvS, where they changed the story so much just so they could fit more characters into the movie and we get something that is so bad that any kind of fan of the DC universe will be appalled. Sorry for the long post but to sum it all up, it's ok for small changes due to time and budget restrictions as long as the essence of the character and story they're using will be represented properly.

    I'm in the medium between the girls and the guys. As a huge comic book fan myself I empathizes with the girls, but I am also a director so I get where the guys are coming from. They needed to find a happy medium between the two groups to be successful. When I did this quest I brought Valentine with me. When we got to the final room he saids "so this is where they shot that tarible TV show." (Or something to that effect.) So obviously in the lore it was not good.

    the boys weren't just thinking about the numbers, comic to TV transitions are tricky but two words for the actress Hair Dye.
    plus you can't just add in random characters from nowhere, for example Batman TAS from the DCAU introduced Harley but they gave her a backstory. adding in a random butler only works if the actual home is barely mentioned and glossed over prior like in the movie adaption of Tomb Raider, compromising the basic story-line will only not cause problems if the comic is obscure enough or if the change still carries through important elements like Tony Stark being attacked with his own weapons and Oliver Queens ship wreck, key elements that remain in most adaptations even if the most recent versions alter the orignal origins.

    Surprised on how tame everything ended up, usually in a prewar backstory someone get shot, somebody is mutated, they're actually producing weapons for the US military, there's a serial killer with a fetish for posing corpses, a lover's quarrel ends with with everyone killing each other, angry riots murder innocent children, a former US business man becomes an immortal cyborg. But here she just quits and that about it.

    I think I side with the girls. I've sat through too many TV shows/movies that completely abandoned their source material. Yes, some adaptation is necessary and even good. But, when you dump the core of the characters in favor of focus groups you're going to produce crap. Its that simple. And when you have an established, devoted fan base that are the primary target audience, you're cutting your own throat.

    It's not that executives and other higher-ups have never had moments where their revisions have improved a work...but as a general rule that's true 90% of the time, the ones who are right are the ones who believe in the material for the sake of its art, who put the quality of their work ahead of its viability as a marketable product. Quality and a vision of what's right for your art are what make a product iconic and give it the power to last, not what creates cheap, short-lasting bursts of attention. You'll never regret standing firm on your principles and faith in your art as much as you'll regret being associated with something that mars your vision past recognition.

    All this story reminds me is a story of Fallout itself. On one side you have that core audience who grew on Fallout 1 & 2, who spent hours/days/years studying every last bit of it - evangelist. On the other, times have changed, years passed and there is new generation of gamers not really familiar with Fallout universe - they might recognise franchise, but not the details. They won't mind changes or inconsistencies, as long as game is interesting, so they'll stick to it and buy DLCs and other parts. You, as the producer, answering to shareholders, have to find that sweet spot - to appeal to older fans, while getting as much new players as you can (more buyers - more monies ;)). Fallout 3 was such pilot - maybe not for the hardcore fans, but managed to gather new players. I liked it and don't get me wrong - I've begun my adventure with franchise back around '01/02 and got into it while it was still canon ;). F:NV was clearly a nod to FO1/2 lovers: franchise managed to survive and catch again, fanbase began to grow and "newbies" got interested in history, so we can have some more of the "old Fallout". FO4 again made a step into future; while not the best, I believe it's a nice continuation. But then, as with lot of similar stories of rock'n'roll, Todd overdosed on Med-X and FO76 happened... Will Fallout survive, again?

    Fallout's genus was in board games and then it moved to isometric graphic computer games and on to 3D. Like Silver Shroud, people were uncomfortable with elements of each transition to a new media form. Lore puritans were in uproar as bean counters went for potentially popular but less lore abiding choices. This story hints allegorical quite strongly

      Matt As seven graves hinted at, I see WAY more similarities to the shadow than Batman, but hey, who really knows? You'd hafta ask Bethesda themselves. I just see a tad bit more of the Shadow in the silver shroud, for one, it's a radio show, for two, the radio show sounds real close to how the Shadow radio shows were. But the Alfred reference does make it a bit difficult to judge, I guess it's kinda like Preston, and Sturges being based based off of some guy that the name escapes me. Sorry to reawaken this old comment.
