Certainly could get crazy after a day's racing and your speed level awareness becomes so distorted you think you're in 3.5 and go for a down-change when in reality you're in 3rd and go for 1st!
Reminds me of the transmission in my truck, it has 8 gears, but you shift 1-2-3-4 then flick a switch then 5-6-7-8 are in the positions of 1 to 4. So when you shift, 1234 flick switch up, then select "1st" its actually 5th. When downshifting from 5th to 4th it feels funny to shift from position 1 to position 4. But you get used to it. When not loaded, i generally drive starting in 2nd, then 4th, rev out to 2300rpm (redline is 2650rpm) then shift to 6th, then 8th at 2500. By this time you are doing 70kmh. 8th gear is good for 103kmh (max speed in 8th is limited to 2150rpm so you cannot go faster than 103)
@@Colt45hatchback I know nothing about trucks but I'm presuming that's some sort of high and low ratio yes? Again, I presume gearboxes have moved on with synchromesh and whatnot, I doubt you're having to double de-clutch between each gear change these days though perhaps you do heel & toe on a down-shift still yeah?
@@LOOKINVERTED yes its a high and low, double countershaft transmission with synchromesh, but i would have preferred the non sychro contstant mesh version of the transmission, but its not available as an option for my truck anymore, you dont have to double clutch, but i do as i dont like the feeling of "pushing through" the sychro, if you get the rpms right with the double clutch method the stick basically falls into the gear instead of having to push. I do rev match on downshift (and upshift) but as the air brake pedal is the same shape as an old car type accelerator (a rectangle hinged at the floor) i dont heel toe specifically its more of a tilt my foot to the right (half on the brake pedal and 1/4 on the throttle) its smoother with the layout of the pedals. I must say though modern trucks are alot less nice to drive in that aspect, its much harder to rev match when the throttle pedal is digital and the computer decides how much you can have and dampens the input. The last truck i had also had a digital pedal, but it was a direct 1-1 ratio to the fuel rack so it was fine, this one took a long time to get used to.
