I just picked up this ladder today and completed the install the same day. The ladder is super solid and a super snug fit which makes it very difficult and tricky to complete the final steps. You just have to outsmart the thing and understand that there are some points in the install that will make you think your ladder is too short. It probably took me 4 hours to install but feel I could install a second one in half the time. Please note: You will likely need stronger lift gate struts. My brand new 2021 TRD Pro lift gate now sags under the additional weight of the ladder. I did not expect this.
@@chuckdeez810 I spent at least an hour on the last step before I finally got it. It’s tough to do by yourself. Loosen/remove the 6 screws on the bottom and the 4 others that hold the bottom step. Then really muscle it to try a balanced install approach where you try to partially get all the screws or at least 3 on the bottom in before getting the rest and tightening them down. I was probably applying 200lbs of pressure and wasn’t sure if the ladder or the tailgate was flexing at times. I remember thinking the ladder is an inch too short but somehow I just really pushed hard enough to get certain screws inserted just enough to then be able to crank them tighter. If it feels impossible then you are at the part I was at. Focus on getting just 3 very loosely inserted on the bottom first and the 4 on the side started before adding the final 3 screws and tightening it all down.
@@mcbihlmeier thx for the detailed response. I was able to get the outer two side screws in for now. I guess I will try to borrow a huge adjustable wrench to flex the bottom plate like Jeff’s video but seems so unnecessarily difficult imo. Loosening the six bottom screws definitely helped but im afraid if I undo them completely then I won’t be able to get the sliding nuts in place.
Thank you for making this video. It really helped! Luckily my ladder came with the last step already installed. This made installing the ladder a lot easier. It only took me an hour by myself! Definitely need a ball end hex key for that top plate install. It’s very tight if you have fat fingers. I’ve heard a bunch of stories about how painful the install can be, but this video made it easier.
I just ordered this after wasting 500 on a poorly designed Prinsu ladder. Thanks for the video this looks like a more secure design and sturdier. The Prinsu doesn't have enough bend on the top plate and relies on adhesive to stay put. Since my ladder didn't sit flush it pulled adhesive on one side which caused the plate to get in the door jam and stripped off paint down to metal when opening hatch. Ugh.
Hey guys, thanks for the helpful video....would you recommend getting heavier duty rear hatch liftgate supports (like StrongArm) for this ladder, or do the OEM supports handle it without sagging the rear hatch?
Looks good. I was debating whether to install a ladder on my 4runner or not and I think you just convinced me. What tire swing are you running cuz it looks simple which is what I'm looking for? Love these install vids, It helps me to see how easy mods can be.

Ya'll missed the part where the inside bottom 2 screws closest to the hatch are INSANE to get lined up by a single person. Love my ladder, this thing isn't going anywhere and it's designed exceptionally strong.
It’s a great looking ladder but seeing that the ladder can be screwed on at the top and bottom, I worry that where I live someone can easily steal the ladder by removing it from the brackets. This ladder also requires drilling while competitor’s products don’t.
They would have to pop the hatch to unbolt it from the bottom. If that's the case then they've already broken into your car anyway. I can't imagine many people would want to steal only part of your ladder knowing that they would have to go to Westcott to get that missing piece.
Rotopax mount not compatible with this ladder. Impossible to drill the holes on the side of this ladder. Installation process is pain in the ass. You will need some tricks to make it aligned bottom plates. Also, you will need a pair of lift support to be replaced for your trunk. It won't raise your trunk door due to the weight. However, its sturdy built and better aggressive look than any other ladder in the market.
Eventhough I have a Tacoma, I've always like the way the ladder look on the 4Runner.

I have this issue -- it seems to be just too short to get the last four side step screws in...any tips on how to out smart it lol it got me

I'm not sure why that would be a surprise, as you just added 30(+)(-) pounds to your lift gate...

It is super light, you can pick it up with one finger easily. It's thick and beefy but it's aluminum.

Ha ha. That step took me about an hour to figure out. Did you find your lift gate struts sag after the install?

Not required, it's not needed but for added strength if you actually mount a lot of weight to it and actually use it to get up
Don’t try this without the ball head hex key. Even with it I couldn’t get the second screw in for the top plate.

that looks like a complete rip off of the c4 fab's ladder.
What exactly do you consider a rip-off? Are all cell phones a rip-off of each other? This ladder is far superior and stronger.
Design is the very similar with a lot of improvements made. We like C4 but this ladder is better
