    I would use the last prompt with caution, as someone who has a genuine paranoia fear of losing their partner due to past loss, this prompt would probably ruin the entire mood for me. Otherwise, great ideas!! Love the videos :)

      Totally depends on the couple for sure. You can always rephrase it to avoid the entire “we don’t always get to say goodbye” part - and rephrase to “we don’t often tell someone what they actually mean to us” - it just doesn’t hit as hard. But you’re totally right. It’s not a prompt for every couple and phrasing it and prefacing the prompt is something I do every time.

    I really liked these, gives me new material to use. The last one leaves me with a question: when do you know if that's a safe prompt for your couple or not. I don't want to offend anyone or cross a line.

    • @JosiahBlizzard
      @JosiahBlizzard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! It's going to come down to how comfortable your couple has been on camera. For me, this is a prompt that would come out towards the end of the session. If I'm shooting for 90 minutes, this would come out at the 70-80 minute mark. They need to check two boxes for me. The first is to be 100% on board with every prompt you've thrown their way. The second is they should have a visible emotional connection and continue to make each other laugh, smile, or connect with one another through your prompts and that might even extend beyond the prompts. Essentially, there shouldn't be a struggle or stiffness that exists during prompts or poses. Those are the only two things I'm looking for. It also might depend on overall mood, attitudes, and personalities of the couple. If you find the couple can't be serious ever then I'd avoid this one. Hope that helps!

  • @susiehosterman6490
    @susiehosterman6490 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My friend died unexpectedly this past week very young and yet I'm also happily engaged. If I had tried to get our engagement photos done during this time and got hit with that last prompt.... I'd have not been able to think of anything happy and because I have depression I would have been a possible danger to myself afterwards. You can never truly know all the ins and outs of your photo clients. Maybe nix that last one and air on the side of caution. You can get natural responses without weird emotional manipulation which, you may not even know, could traumatize a person. Unless you also have a degree in psychology or are an actual marriage counselor, maybe stay in your lane.

    • @JosiahBlizzard
      @JosiahBlizzard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So sorry for your loss! It’s true; it may not be the best prompt or the best way to phrase the prompt. It needs to be done with the right couple. I don’t love the phrase “stay in your lane” though. My lane, as I see it, is to bring people closer together which I’ve seen this prompt do multiple times. I don’t have to be a psychologist or marriage counselor to use a prompt like this to bring people closer together, but I do understand where you’re coming from. I’ve also had a couple or two say they don’t want to do this prompt and we’ve pivoted out and kept rolling with some very traditional prompts and everything was fine. It’s all about delivery, how you set up the prompt, the phrasing, and how well you know the couple. It’s worked for me in the past, but if it’s not one you want to use, then that’s okay.

    • @showorker
      @showorker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JosiahBlizzard @Josiah Blizzard (*same girl, different TH-cam account). Your lane was in regards to bringing up death and saying you're basically a marriage counselor in the beginning of your video. I have worked with quite a few photography studios, each with their own unique way of influencing clients to get the shots they want. I'm here to tell ya this practice is antiquated and misleading. True connection happens authentically. If it's forced it FEELS forced. Stay in your lane could also be interpreted to mean "get real dude". Would you treat people like this out on the street? Then don't do it as usual business practice in your job. If you've had clients tell you they weren't comfortable with that prompt, and you see these comments also expressing similar concerns about the prompt... Maybe best practice is to avoid it all together. You're in the business of illusion. When I worked in marketing, I too was all about creating the illusion of connection and overly focused on 'influencing' people. Now I'm in the business of being honest. But at least you're being honest that you're emotionally manipulating your clients. I guess there's that. So you do you boo.

    • @JosiahBlizzard
      @JosiahBlizzard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@showorker I appreciate your comments. I really do. Comments like these give me lots to think about. I have mentioned that this prompt isn’t for every couple. There is probably a better way to phrase this prompt and it’s something I’m going to work out. But I have seen this prompt bring people closer together. So as for staying in my lane, I don’t believe there is one singular lane. I am “getting real” with them. I don’t believe my job is to just photograph people in poses. I believe that photography can bring people closer together and if I’m able to do that, then I’m going to. Yes, I mentioned marriage counseling… it was a joke of sorts, but also partially true because I want to give couples the opportunity to express themselves and share in emotion and I’m just giving them a space to do that. Maybe I am manipulating a scenario to get them to give me that emotion, but to the couples who have agreed to do this prompt and experience real emotion with one another, I don’t think they feel manipulated, and if they do, they definitely haven’t expressed that to me. They’ve replied to the prompt in the way I expect them to: with an open heart to connect with the person they love and share what someone really means to them. It’s an uncomfortable question. It’s a hard question. But sometimes we have to get uncomfortable and vulnerable to share our heart.
