I love how real this is, I love seeing you thinking cause it makes me feel I am not the only one that has to stop and think a second. I feel other photographers just don’t ever stop lol
Thanks Karolina! Definitely have to stop and think sometimes. Sometimes I'm go-go-go with inspiration and creativity and other times I have to wait for it to hit me.

I love this! I just started photographing couples for the first time and find myself getting so caught up in my head. Making sure I'm posing correctly, not sounding weird or aggressive (hello social anxiety). This just helped me realize that it's more about being in the moment and just relaxing into it. Great shoot and I really appreciate how the person filming this is far enough back so you can really see how you've placed the couple within the lighting. So often I watch videos but the video zooms in too close and you can't see exactly how the photographer positioned the subjects. Many thanks to you and to the person who filmed this!

Hey Josiah, just wanted to comment on how I really dig the way you communicate with the couple to loosen the atmosphere, make them laugh and capture unique and authentic moments. Haven't seen a photographer doing something like this before. Amazing.

@@JosiahBlizzard I can clearly see that. Really inspiring to someone like me just starting out. How have you come up with those little tricks like walk-bump or make strange sound in the ear? Are these spontaneous ideas coming to your mind in that moment or do you have any source of inspiration for stuff like that? Again, very inspiring!
Just things I've picked up from other photographers and prompts I've gathered along the way. Some of them I just flat out make up on the spot though.

Dude! Your prompts are really good. And the couple was so good and such a good sport! Any tips or videos for the "awkward" ones? Those ones who don't like being photographed? The super serious ones?
Thanks! I think the serious and awkward ones really just come down to getting them to stop thinking about the camera and more on each other and to have some fun. There'll always be couples who can be more difficult to shoot than others, but as long as they have fun with you and you do work similar to what they've seen from you before, then they'll love the images. It'll be difficult for you but the goal is to make sure they still love the photos and had fun doing it.

@@kittykat3864 Awesome! Building a photography business is a marathon and not a sprint. Take your time, build it right, and be consistent. Make sure you're sharing and posting your work consistently to social media. Don't be afraid to create work for free at first to get some traction and building your portfolio, but make sure you do it on your terms, meaning you're in charge of the shoot and you're not shooting for a client for free. Figure out how much you need to make from photography each month and break that down into how many shoots or weddings you'd need to do each month to make that much money. Doing things that way will allow you to set goals on both income and shoots so that you have something to aim for. Lots of tips for that, but don't get discouraged in the beginning. It takes a while to get the ball rolling.
Jesus christ I was smiling / laughing through the entire video. Man I wanna be photographed by you. I have a question though. The moving couple when they walk towards you, how do you manage to get them so crisp? What focal point are you at? Unfortunately I'm stuck in my mindset and always using 1.4 and getting blurry pictures. Of course I could get up to 2.8 but what's the magic number?

Thanks and ultimately, my settings don’t matter. All anyone needs to know is that I shoot with my aperture as wide open as possible (1.4-2.8) and then make sure my shutter speed is as fast as it needs to be to avoid blurring and then my ISO is set to make sure the exposure is correct. My images are exposed as close to perfect in camera and then my Lightroom edits completely change the final look of the photo. I am shooting on a Sony a7iii but you can get images like this on really any camera if you have a 50 1.4.
@josiahblizzard can you do a video going in depth about your shooting set up for this shoot and what kind of settings you did?
I’ll think about it. My settings are pretty simple. I shoot with wide open aperture, low ISO and fast enough shutter speed to avoid blur. My settings for this shoot are the same as any other shoot. I think what would be more beneficial is a video guide that explains lighting and the posing. Would you agree?
Great video J, really helpful. Do you ever use a continuous focusing mode when the couples are walking or just maintain a constant distance? Also, are you spot metering for the skin tones? Thanks.
Thanks! Because I shoot Sony, my focus mode is always continuous as it has face tracking. I am also just keeping an eye on my in camera meter.

Hey Chad! I think I was on a 50mm 1.4 from Sigma. Big lens and looks similar to the 24-70. And settings are pretty wide open (1.4-2.8) and iso probably between 400-1000 and shutter likely 1/200 or faster

Thanks. Settings obviously vary based on lighting and location. I’m typically shooting between f/1.4-2.8, shutter speed fast enough to avoid unintentional motion blur, and iso as low as I can keep it.

Not sure. My aperture was super open, probably 1.4. My ISO was probably around 400-800 and my shutter speed was fast enough to stop them from blurring when they moved.

What do you keep your shutter speed at for all the movement? I struggle in brighter light to keep shutter speed up..
Depends on the light but I pretty consistently am 1/200 or 1/250 or faster.

Do you have any tips for shooting a couple where the woman is taller than the man?
It's definitely tough, but only because we've determined that men should be taller than women which isn't always the case. My biggest tip is to approach it with the mindset of "this is normal for them." It might be weird for you, but for them and their relationship, they're not going to find it strange. I'll ask them if they're self conscious about anything and if the man is self conscious about his height in relationship to the woman, and I'll tell them that making him appear taller would mean that we're lying about their relationship and who they are. I want to capture their true relationship and so we can do some things to lessen that height difference, but we will be following a lot of the same poses and doing a lot of prompts because it's about the laughter, the smiles, the real moments that will make you feel something when you see the image.

When they are walking away and bumping where do you focus ?
I just focus on one of the people’s faces. Doesn’t matter who but as long as one person is in focus, you’re good
How many shots do you take in a session and how many photos do you deliver?
A lot and as many as are good. No exact amount. Probably somewhere around 1000-1500 and deliver around 200-400

I shoot with the 18-105 for video on my a6500 but for photo I pretty much just stick with a 50mm 1.4 from Sigma
