  • Hey everyone, it’s David with MACkiteboarding. Today, we're exploring an advanced water start technique that not only helps you recover from a crash but also adds a stylish flair to your riding. Specifically, we'll be focusing on a front roll water start from the scorpion position-a common scenario where you're on your stomach with the board behind you after a fall.
To set up for this trick, you'll want to start in the scorpion position with the kite at 12 o'clock. It's crucial to ensure that you have a good amount of power in the kite, as this will make the maneuver easier to execute. Begin by feeling centered and confident, with your board securely on your feet. Next, bring the kite down to generate some movement and feel the tension in the lines. As you prepare to start the trick, send the kite back up to 12 o'clock or slightly past it, which helps initiate the rotation.
As you send the kite up, sheet in and tuck your front knee to begin the rotation. Unlike a typical front roll where you look over your back shoulder, for this trick, it's easier to look under your arm due to your laid-out position and the lines being in your face. This head-tuck will help initiate the rotation. You'll feel your board catch the water behind you, which provides the necessary line tension to pop out of the water.
While rotating, keep your eyes under the bar to spot your landing. It's important to start redirecting the kite as you come around. This should happen naturally due to the extra front-hand pressure typical in front rolls. Be cautious with your bar pressure and steering; avoid diving the kite too aggressively.
This technique is essentially the same as a regular front roll in terms of kite movement and body mechanics. The key difference is the initial laid-out position and the head tuck for rotation initiation. By mastering this trick, you can turn a crash into a stylish recovery, making it look intentional and adding a bit of flair to your riding.

Nice one! How do you keep the board on your feet when dragging through the water? I ussually loose my board there..

Thanks for asking, my friend. 🤙🏽 First, make sure your footstraps are adjusted for a snug fit. Next, curl your toes hard to grip the toe bar when you crash. Lastly, keep practicing until you get it dialed. Good winds to you! -Aaron

Hey Mark! Thanks for the question. As Aaron said, having the footstraps tighter definitely helps but not required once you get the hang of it, i like to ride with mine looser for boardoffs. One trick is to also push your toeside rail into the water a bit more, rather than letting the board be flat, if you create some drag, you'll have more pull of your feet into the top of the straps.

Sick trick! I’ve done the regular water start from scorpion, and pushing down with your toes helps a lot in getting up and out, is that still the same with this version?

Hey thanks for the question! Yes exactly, by pushing down some with your toes when you send the kite, you'll create more drag with the board which equals more line tension. Then as you start to feel the pull, tuck your front knee but keep pressing some with your toes on the back foot and it should initiate that rotation. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!
