Great insight into my favourite guitar player of all time! To me, Alex was always the “secret weapon” of RUSH. He has a style like no one else. Within the context of RUSH, those huge open chords he played filled out the space so much. He’s the reason they sounded so huge (especially live), for a 3 piece. And, he’s an arpeggio master. I think the reason he gets overlooked is he always played tastefully, and, most importantly, was there to serve the song. He can shred, but, when he does it’s not just mindless ego driven guitar wanking. His solos always were beautifully composed, and fit perfectly within the context of the song. Post RUSH, he’s been guest soloing for a lot of different artists, so, good to see he’s keeping the fingers moving. It’s too bad you never saw them live, they were something truly special!
Always loved the earlier stuff. Hated the mid to late 80s stuff. Any more though, I'm loving the less hard synth stuff they did. All of their music is very good. He is probably my favorite player. Definitely underrated.
Great assessment, Corey. I always thought that Alex was THE most underrated guitarist. What do you think about Buck Dharma from BOC? He seems to be pretty much forgotten.
Oh yeah, Dan. There’s a name I haven’t heard in ages!! Buck was a very melodic player which is something I love. I’m having a blast making these, so he’ll find his way into the rotation I’m sure! Thanks for watching and chatting!
Hello there Mr Armchair Rockstar I enjoyed this video on why Alex Lifeson doesn't get the love he probably deserves. I am primarily a heavy rock (Purple, Sabbath) and Prog rock (Rush, Yes, ELP) fan and as such I rate Alex in my top 10 best guitarists of all time. In fact my top 5 are probably Blackmore, Eddie van Halen, Page, Alex Lifeson & Steve Howe. Even Blackmore although well respected doesn't get the love of Page and Hendrix or even Clapton. I think you have made a good point about radio hits and in general "popularity". Alex like you say is a quiet guy, supremely skilful, very clean play even on very complex pieces but he is not raved about anywhere near as many others that to me don't show the same level of skill.
As a lifelong fan of Rush and a bassist I've always respected Alex...so underrated.
