    I’m 75 years old and do a lot of my own work around the house. I must admit that I expected to spend $400 - $500 for a repairman before I found this video. My refrigerator is a different model of Samsung, but it has the dual cooling so I gave it a shot. God bless the person who posted this it was a blessing. My heart felt thanks to you. Frank.

    Thank you Chris, i fixed my samsung today thanks to your spot on demo. I believe the problem arises because samsung used open cell foam to plug the holes which the refrigerant lines pass through. The foam wicks up moisture and the iceberg forms from there. Samsung, you owe me a million dollars for solving your engineering problem.

      Are you referring to the holes going from the inside of the fridge through the back panel? Was this a permanent solution?
      I am still researching the root cause. Why would the fridge work ok for 4 years and then start having this issue? What has changed? Did something break? Are there seals that are no longer sealing?

    Thanks for the video. This worked for my Samsung Fridge. I was surprised by how much ice buildup there was around the coils and fan. Hardest part was unloading the fridge.

    Excellent video, Chris. Thank you. I have a slightly different model, but with the same twin cooling fan setup as outlined in your video. Took me 1 hr from start to finish to accomplish what you suggested, including removing and replacing food back into fridge. Took the hint about using towels to sop up dripping water, which saved time cleaning up at the end.
    To speed things up with the hair dryer, I held the ice blocks while thawing them, and focused heating on parts that would permit me to remove large chunks of ice (rather than melting the entire block).
    I like the suggestion in the comments about turning off energy saver to prevent the ice build up from re-occurring. I have had this fridge for four years (purchased in a home, was possibly 3 years old by the time we took possession), and this is the first time I encountered this problem. I think I may have turned on the e-saver in the last year or so, so I am turning it off to see if the problem returns.
    Last point - the two power connector wires connecting the compressor fan door can be removed by pulling at the connectors on the back wall (gently but firmly). This greatly alleviates the stress of trying to hold the door while melting the ice.

    Thanks Chris, appreciate you taking the time to share this design problem by Samsung. Looking at the comments it looks like turning off the "power saving mode" will fix the problem. My Fridge is the exact same model as yours and I also turned the power saving option on about 3 or 4 months ago for the first time. My Fridge is 6 1/2 years old . . . Defrosted and turned the power savings mode off. Thanks again

    Thank you for your post. If I may add, look at the additional post titled, "Samsung French door 4 door bottom glass removal cleaning and reinstallation" by Keat Etes. Removing the bottom glass assembly requires pushing on the center tabs above the water filter to one side or both depending on your model. Once I removed all food, the bottom glass, and the back panel I found the ice build up. Used a heat gun being cautious to do it slowly as to not burn any cables. Done in an Hour including wiping clean the inside of the refrigerator. Thanks.

  • @Ultralord000
    @Ultralord000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I made the solution more permanent. I hope. After melting the ice I put a layer of insulation foam over the area where the ice formed and taped over it with aluminum tape that is supposed to be used for taping ducts. The foam I used is the stuff you put over your plumbing pipes in the basement, I just cut the foam into pieces that would fit to size. Hopefully no more ice will form, and if it does it should be below the foam where it can not affect the fan.
    Thank you so much for putting this video together. Without your video I may have had to buy a new fridge.

  • @dumpling7

    Thanks for useful video. Solved the problem. We have had our fridge for 7 years with no problem until sudden fan noise. Must have been very slow ice build up. Was easy enough for DIY repair removing cover. I poured warm water over the tubing to speed up the melt. I would recommend non DIYER's unable to do this will need to turn off fridge for at least 3 days with the door left open to melt out the ice. Foam insulation makes ice melt slowly. In my opinion a hair dryer is ineffective unless you want to sit there all day! Despite this have had no other problems with our fridge.

      I took out all the foam. The ice won't build again. Just left a piece of the foam to hold a Thermometer. There is another way to fix the problem. The fan is only 0.19 A. I suggest to replace the fan to more powerful computer fan, like 0.3 A. Then air circulation will be better and it might be just enough to stop ice building. There is a water drain just below the Radiator. Pour there boiling water to unplug it.

      The correct way to fix it is to buy the new foam section. Once it gets wet it will just keep freezing over and over again. Comes as a kit and has been redesigned so this problem will stop happening.

    epic, took me 20 minutes to get my parents fridge back in service.
    Excellent video - the bottom tray was a bit tricky, there are 2 clips that need to be depressed before you can pull that up and access the lower 3 screws on the rear cover. Other than that, the hardest part was not melting stuff with my 1200w heat gun :D
    Hair Dryer is recommended unless you are careful and have a vague idea of what you are doing

      @@noazdad I will look when I am at their place again - but from memory the clips are towards the front of the center-piece that holds the water filter.
      I think I used a flat-head screwdriver to depress the clips, while applying upward pressure to keep one clip disengaged while I worked on releasing the second clip.
      What i did was gently flex the bottom tray upwards until I was able to see where the clips were holding tension

    Used some videos on here to fix my Samsung refrigerator. Two days ago fan was making a lot of noise, yesterday went into refrigerator and found out that everything was warm and not cold. Did a search on Samsung refrigerator fan noise and it showed me that the problem was the coils inside the frig behind panal was frozen which caused the noise. The only thing that cost me was my time fixing the problem after emptying the frig to get to that panel and using hair dryer to defrost. I really like having you tube so that I can fix appliances instead of paying someone big money with things that I can do myself.

    I just had the same thing happen to the same model. Also have to defrost the ice maker area every 4-6 weeks. First time after 5 years for this issue. Another issue I fixed may help others: We had water in the bottom of the fridge after only 1.5yrs due to drain freezing-up from all the melted ice from the evaporator unit. I added two Romex-Ground wires, each wrapped around once and a half or two times to the bottom of the heating element and running about 3/4" into the drain. Stock wires don't go deep enough into the drain to effectively melt the ice/slush that's draining off the unit. That fix may help others with that issue. No Samsung Fridges or Ford Edges [2007-2009] (Trans Sensors go bad first = Rebuild = $5k) but that's another post.

Just curious, what temperature do you keep your fridge running at? I had mine at 40F for a long time and recently-ish lowered it to 37, and I wonder if that contributed to quicker ice build up.

    I had the same problem with the same refrigerator, but there was no ice build up in the refrigerator compartment. I finally unloaded my freezer compartment and used a hair dryer on it for 15-20 minutes (until it was all warm to the touch), focusing on the CEILING of the fridge and the air vents on the back panel. This took care of the noise that had been bothering me for the last 3 years. Samsung needs to do something about it...I will never buy another Samsung fridge.

    After this fix is done make sure your fridge is leveled using leveling nuts at the front bottom of the fridge and your front wheels need to be in the air (according to Samsung). This should prevent it from happening again, just did this and keeping my fingers crossed. Here is the link with more info from Samsung

    • @qniverse
      @qniverse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      to anyone else having this problem, Rizwan is correct I believe. For 5 or 6 years, I had no problems with this refrigerator. Then one day, I get the idea to clean behind the refrigerator, so I raise the leveling nuts and roll the refrigerator forward. After cleaning, I roll it back and then I didn't realize I had to level it back up (so that the front wheels are hanging in the air) and just left it on the wheels instead. For a while, there were no issues, but last summer, I started getting the fan noise and ice build-up. I defrost and clean up the ice and 3 months later, it happens again. I clean it up again, and then 1 month later, it happens again. I fix it and this time, thankfully, I found Rizwan's tip. It's been 2+ months since my last ice clean-up and no issues. I also don't notice any ice forming in the back that creeps through holes in the plastic cover as it used to do before.

    • @raoulbsantiago80
      @raoulbsantiago80 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      qniverse ... so it seems that refrigerators are really just big AC window units that need to be tilted so the water will drain properly...the front of the fridge is usually a little higher than the back...if it’s too “leveled” the water will sit and eventually freeze. Also don’t block the vents, don’t overload the fridge, defrost the fridge every now and then, empty ice buckets often, etc.
      ... I’m trying to learn how to maintain a “healthy” fridge. Does this sound correct? Any tips?

I removed the 3 phillips screws from the bottom, then unhooked from the right side but then I cannot pull it out completely. How do you do that? Push it down or pull it? Seems to be caught at the top somehow... Thanks in advance for any tips!

      Around 50 seconds in the video I show there is a 4th screw that is hidden behind a white cap in the upper middle section. I'm willing to bet that's the problem. Hope that helps.

      Chris did you get it off? there is a screw under a cover just to top of shelve bracket. Then if it does not come off, unplug and let fridge sit for 12 hours the cover is prob frozen on. Or use a blow dryer to loosen up the ice.

    Front wheels are not supposed to touch floor. Raise n tilt back a little and no more problems. Per Samsung

  • @lyem654
    @lyem654 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The root cause of the problem is ice built up and then clogged up the cold air vent holes and jammed the fan by ice. There are multiple reasons for ice build up:
    1. Where did the ice come from? To minimize the ice we need to keep moisture inside to the minimum, which means covering up glasses of water, milk, opened sod cans, soup, cut open water melon, mango, fruits, wet vegetable, raw meat, etc. . The humidity inside the refrigerator is quite low, and so anythings that can be dried up will release moiture and this will form ice, and too much ice will out win the defrost heater short heating cycle (Samsung designed short defrost cycle to achieve the Energy Star) and the net result is a slowly ice build up if too much moisture inside.
    2. The other moisture source is the bottom Pantry tray that collected water. You need to pull out the pantry and clean this bottom tray every month or so, or after a spill from trays above. Any liquid spill not cleaned up will ended up as ice inside the fan box -- no magic about this.
    3. The bottom drainage hole is clogged up with ice. Once this happened, every degrost cycle will release the water down into the bottom Pantry and pool there. This water then evaporate and form ice inside the fan box eventually. (Hint: to melt the drain hole ice fast, fill up the "pond" above the clogged drain hole with water then place a 15 watts soldering iron hot tip into the water and make sure to keep the hot tip from directly touching the plastic part that can be melted. Add more water if the "pond" is dried up and expose the hot iron tip. The hot water will melt the ice and clear up the drain hole. This method is faster than hair dryer or adding hot water spoon by spoon. You need to keep an eye on this and remove the iron as soon as the hole is cleared.
    4. Due to Energy Star regulation, Samsung and others have tried to design their products with low electrical consumption, which means they run the defrost heating cycle in much shorter time. If there is not much ice built up then the short defrost cycle is enough to melt all ice, but if the ice is too much then it ended up winning the battle and jammed up the fan or clogged up the cooling vent holes and the unit cannot get cold.
    So how do we solve these problems? It is unrealistic to have zero moisture inside the refrigerator, but if we can keep it to the minimum as I pointed out in (1) and (2) above, and with a modification to the design that prevents the drain hole clogged up then the problem will be eliminated permanently.
    To solve the problem (3), I used a 6 inches long, 3mm diameter copper (or aluminum) wire, wrapped around the black heater pipe (just above the drain hole and running across left to right) 3 turns, and extended the wire down into the drain hole. If you don't have large gauge wire then just use two smaller gauge wires, wrap them on the left and right side of the heater pipe and extend the wires down into the drain hole about 1.5 to 2 inches. This should carry the heat from the back heat pipe down deep into the drain hole and helps to prevent ice building up inside the hole.
    I used to fix the ice build up issue every year, but after implementing the 3 steps above, it has been running over 2 years and still no problem. My unit is RF266AB.

    I have a different model Samsung but would have never bought it had I known this.. Mine started making noise the other night and it's only 3 years old. I thought the first issue that refrigerator "technology" solved was making the frost free fridge back in the 1970's. Now we buy these thousands dollar refrigerators that can do everything but shine our shoes but we're back to the 1950's scheduling defrost sessions. They probably design this flaw into them so they can fleece us with service calls! I have an old 70's fridge in my garage that NEVER needed defrosted! It's been running nonstop for 40 years!!!

    • @CB-ug6xh
      @CB-ug6xh  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree completely. We have a 20 year old fridge in the basement and I have never had an issue with it. My Samsung was only 2 years old and it started doing this. They make them look pretty, but the design is garbage.

    • @chefjimmie1
      @chefjimmie1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      CB15: I took it all apart and defrosted it. It was purchased in 2013 (so it's actually 4 yr old) and this is the first issue I've had but I didn't expect any for QUITE some time. When you spend a thousand dollars on a fridge, you expect the best but like you said, it's only the best LOOKING. Mine wasn't completely frozen, that is, the evaporator was just beginning to freeze so I didn't need to apply heat. A pool of ice was forming at the base of the fan shroud which was beginning to interfere with the fan causing the noise. I think that in the future, when it comes to major appliances I'll stick to GE and let Samsung make smartphones. Thanks for making the video. It was a big help.

      To be fair, fridges these days hold twice as much for the same amount of space (because we consumers demand it), are energy efficient, and look good on top of that (I'd bet they cost less than those in the 70's, too, in today's dollars). Sacrifices have to be made to designs to accomplish those goals. I think this comes from Samsung not having 50 years of experience making fridges. The least they can do is make the parts that need servicing easy to get to, and I'd say a few screws qualifies. Or you can pay 4x as much and get a Sub-Zero...your choice.

    I just read the following and have just tried it. "Fix: Raise the front. It is not supposed to have the front wheels on the ground. This happens because it is not properly leveled, so condensation collects where it shouldn't. If you tilt it back a bit you should never have to defrost it again."

  • @frozerekmeyata4091
    @frozerekmeyata4091 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I actually found an easier solution, I was having the same issue with my 2016 Dutch door model...after the warranty expired of course. I tried the manual defrost on my but my computer in the frig must be different and it didn't work, so I just left the top part of the frig doors open for 6 hours; about 5 days after I did that the fan hitting the ice noise came back.
    Ok, so I defrosted it again for 6 hours, then I decided to play around a bit with the temp settings, first I raised the top part of the frig temp to 40 degrees instead of 38 where I had it, then I raised the middle drawer from the meat setting of 29 degrees to the drink temperture of 33 degrees...so far so good, no ice build up that I can tell for 3 months.
    I think either Samsung put a poorly designed defrosting capability in their units, or the internal thermometer that is suppose to keep the temp at whatever temp you select is off by a few degrees, so when I had the top part of the frig set for 38 it probably was around 32 to 35, and the drawer likewise was probably running at 25 or so instead of 29.

      I never thought of this. The colder the fridge, the more difficult it is for the heating element to defrost the coils/evaporator.
      I am still researching the root cause. Why would the fridge work ok for 4 years and then start having this issue? What has changed? Did something break? My initial research points to the seal on the back panel or front door seal not working as well as day one. Super frustrating!!!

    From what I can find on TH-cam the ice is caused by a bad seal because of the cheap foam and thin cheap seal. I am going with drying everything out and replacing the seal as perfectly as possible. A good fit will stop entry of warm moist air where its not supposed to be. See on this video its at the top - I would guess thats where the poor fit is.

      I want to help. It's been a few months now. Behind the plastic cover there are two sensors I believe. They can be ordered on line. You will need to have some basic mechanical skills. Not much thou. I believe it is the defrost temperature sensor. Make sure you get the sensor for your model. Price is very inexpensive. Just replace it. You need to totally defrost the ice in the back first. The sensor just plugs in and gets taped to it's original position. Hope this helps. Let me know. Ps. let the ice defrost before you force the plastic cover off. It is filled with foam that will break and compromise the function that it has. Good luck.

      I'm no Fridge expert, but to me it seems they shouldn't have tightly coiled the brass refrigerant line in the upper right corner. It's almost like they had too much line and just decided to bundle it together rather than routing it in longer runs or just shortening the line. I usually have to do this once or twice per year. If yours is freezing up after 3 weeks you might have something else causing that.

The feces hits the rotating oscillator, so to speak ... lol ) Also, when removing the ICE MAKER .... A solution has been found. I too own one of these lovely, defective refrigerators. I've been trying to fix the ice maker from leaking water and slushy ice, as well as the fan noise and the over iciing in the fridge. I found a video from a refrigerator repair guy who said to move the sensor off of the insulated incoming rubber tubing, over to the copper outgoing tube. I did that about a week ago, and immediately noticed a difference in how the refrigerator is cooling. All of the temperatures are perfect. I don't have water dripping out of the ice maker anymore. Try it. I'm hoping it's a long term solution. Right now, it seems like it is.
