    Bingo! My machine was doing the same thing, even after getting a new EPA carb; it was better with the new carb, but still "hunting." I bored the jet bore as you suggested and the machine is running like it is brand fantastic. What a no cost, quick, easy, do it yourself fix that is. Thank you very much for solving a season of running like crap.

      Did you rund the drill bit straight down through the center of the bolt/jet? Or does the drill bit go through the tiny hole on anglearound the threads of the bolt?
      Thanks

    mustie1 and 65ford ROCK!!!! I did the drill out thing .and that machine is running like the first time I started it!! I'm ready to wax it now, that's how much I love it!!! Keep up the GREAT postings!!!

    Excellent fix. There is often a very tiny hole drilled at an angle at the top of this jet. Be sure it is clean as well as others that may be in that threaded portion. A wire from Wire Brush can be used to clean them out.

    This is exactly what my Ariens 824 with the 8 horse Tecumseh Snow king needs! I tried a eBay carb like the one in this video and after 3 days of trying, the engine just wouldn't cooperate. I believe the carb brand name was a Oregon. Thanks Mustie, this video is so valuable to anyone with a fixed jet carb!

    i know this video is almost 3 years old but thank you for making it. My Craftsman snowblower is doing the exact same thing, i'm going to try this out, because I'm having a hard time trying to find a replacement, and snow is fast approaching. I live in Maine so it will be a big help! Thank You!

    Great video! I just did this to two of my machines and it worked! Thank you! I also did it to a 3rd machine with the adjustable needle - there is a really small, angled hole drilled in the side and it was partially clogged. I ran a micro drill bit through it and now the machine runs great!

    Thanks Mustie....just followed your Tecumseh 10ho fix along with a couple of other TH-cam HM100 Jet fixes and my generator is running like new ! My Emulsion tube was missing to O ring toward the center of the Carb.... my bowl bolt jet needed to be drilled a tiny tiny bit and the air mixture jet was sealed tight... just ran a very thin piece of wire thru it and reassembled.... I was going to just this 5000/6250 watt generator last week....but you guys save me a $500.00 dollar bill !
    Great stuff !

    Sometimes just sending a little Seafoam thru the carb actually cleans out a small jet like that. Worked on my used snowblower when I got it. It didn't want to stay running until I added 1 oz. per gallon of Seafoam and it stayed running now.

    I always use premium fuel for my chainsaws, blowers, and lawn mowers. I hear that it doesn't contain alcohol like the other grades. Probably an urban legend. Still, it's what I do. I also add "Sta-Bil" for over winter storage. I also run the carbs dry too. Seems to work like a charm.
    I have a Toro self-propelled bagger that needs carb work. Might just get a Chinese replacement for $26.50 instead!
    Great fix.

    Don't forget to add a fuel shutoff valve and a fuel filter plus make sure your governor might need a adjustment

  • @JohnG-qx8ge

    Mustie1- It seems that the fixed jet carbs are set just rich enough to get the job done and no more. When the air is cold and dense it makes it worse. I found that adjusting the float to raise the fuel level in the bowl allowed for more fuel across the discharge nozzle. That fixed it for me. As the engine gets old it will be less efficient and will need more fuel to run. With a non adjustable carb you cant compensate for it.Great fix!

    Great thought, I have a Toro Power Clear 421QR, and its a non adjustable carb., and it has hunted, or surged since it was new in 2012, cleaned the carb, several time, its been spotless every time I take it apart. Think I'm going to drill out jet, with an indexed drill number drill bit one size over original hole in jet, wish me luck. It runs fine on second step of choke, with no surging, but with choke off, surges regularly, not bad, but its annoying, like its starving for fuel, Thanks for the great idea!!!!!! Gust

    I picked up a Sears high wheel string trimmer with old fuel in it. Cleaned the carb in my ultrasonic and it ran but surged and backfired. Got a carb kit which made no difference. I'll have to try this.

    You put the bowl on 180 off. The deep side goes under the float where it can hang down, shallow side under the hinge pin side of float. Also, you may want to check the fixed idle jet for obstruction.

  • @Blazer02LS
    @Blazer02LS 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very common problem due to the ethanol in the gas. Causes the engine to run lean. By opening the jet a bit it counters the problem. The lean condition also makes the engines run hotter, You can really see this in two strokes.

    I did'nt know about that trick. The tecumseh H-60 6hp on my troy bilt tiller started hunting and a new fuel bowl gasket fixed it. The cracked gasket was only 2 yrs old.

    • @Mr_Tecumseh

      Air was entering and throwing it off. Thats what happens. I have noticed they sell repair kits with new bowl gaskets and the new gaskets in those sets don't last very long.

      I had a 12 hp Tecumseh formula on a Tractor that also hunted. I had an adjustable so I just swapped it out, but those are notorious for surging. Drilling it out should also help.

    Hey Mustie, I've been a fan for a long time, and love your videos! I have a problem though... I have a Toro Turboforce 48 inch walk behind, with a Kawasaki FS481v. The motor surges pretty bad, although it has a brand new carb, brand new fuel filter, brand new fuel pump, and a tuned governor. It is definitely getting fuel: the float bowl was full when we took the fuel line off. What do you think is wrong? I think the governor is worn out, because the motor is like 15 years old. Correct me if otherwise.
    Thanks,
    Alex

    • @mustie1
      @mustie1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sounds like the governor has a bunch of play in it or the window of where it is operating is wrong, if there is room on the linkage put a light spring across it to remove the play, other then that it sounds like it could be running lean. if you pull the choke and it gets better that would be suspect.

    • @Alexwilson225playsMC
      @Alexwilson225playsMC 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it runs a lot better when I pull out the choke, but doesn't stop surging. Thanks!

    I know this video is old, but you mentioned it may be possible to put an adjustable main jet in the bottom in place of the fixed one. Have you tried that, does it work? I know you cant change the idle jet because its different.
    I was able to add an adjustable main to my Predator 212 Honda clone and it works great. Theirs a guy who fabricates them and sells them on ebay cheap. Will that trick work on those Tecumseh's?

    • @splash5974
      @splash5974 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That wont work! Theres an idle/air mixture screw aswell on the adjustable carbs, and the non adjustable carbs dont have that.
