- What are those weird things on my wall? Staghorn ferns! Maria requested that I do a video about my staghorn ferns, how I mounted them, and how I care for them. Here it is!
In this video you'll learn about care requirements for staghorn ferns and how I mounted mine. BTW I accidentally call my fern "Platycerium alicorne" but it's actually "alcicorne", sorry about that.

down here in Florida, we've got it easy with Staghorns, just stick them on a tree or plop them in a basket and hang them from a tree and toss them a banana peel once in a while.🙂 A friend of mine has quite a large one that broke the chain suspending it and we had to rehang it. Since it is ~200 pounds, it required using a heavy duty marine chain to ensure it wouldn't fall again anytime soon and a pulley system to hoist it back in place. My favorite species is the Elephant Ear (Platycerium elephantosis) but whoa are they pricey.🤑
I have seen the biggest staghorn ferns coming from Florida, there are truly beasts down there. I was unfamiliar with Platycerium elephantosis, thanks for sharing! Whoa mama.

I’m in Tampa, FL and staghorn ferns are pretty common around here. Usually hung from a tree to support how massive they get. I met an elderly lady recently and we bonded over plants. She showed me her staghorn that she’s had for 44 years and it was HUGE. Mine is smaller than yours but doing well and I can’t wait for it to get bigger!!!!

This was very informative for me. A very dear client gave me his staghorn fern before he moved and I've been at a loss. I have a humidifier (which sits right next to the plant) to 50% as I live in Northern Utah (dry climate) I just barely moved the plant to a South facing window. The plant is in a pot so I need to either get it mounted or pay someone cause I'm too big of a chicken. I also plan to fertilize it. Great resource this video. Thank you for posting. Growing up my mom had a bunch of old decorating magazines from the 1970's that I loved to look through. Lots of philodendrons in macrame handgers and staghorn ferns mounted on dark wood boards. I have been fascinated ever since but very intimidated. My question is does the wetness ever seep onto the wall? do you have any bumpers or anything on the back to hold it away from the wall? afraid to damage the drywall
It hasn't caused any issues for me since I let them drip-dry for a while before re-hanging them.

Loved watching this video!i have several kinds of these ferns and recently bought a massive fern. it looked fine on the day i purchased but two days later, one of the leaves were started to get dried;and it is even getting worse now, i wonder the reason why this happensㅜㅜ
Hi Betsy, I've had my staghorn for about 10 months now. I got it as a mount, and it starting putting out those kidney shaped fronds about a month ago. I'm wondering when do you need to remount it to a bigger board for the root ball to grow more? Does it even have a root system?
I got one of these recently for really cheap and it was mounted to a board and then there was an orchid mounted to my staghorn. It still is. All up it was $8 and I just couldn’t walk past and not buy it.
It’s not as nicely developed as the ones in the video but it has a new frond leaf thing on its way. I had it on the veranda but after watching this video I moved it to a brightly lit room inside.
I couldn't find spagnum moss, so I used dried spanish moss and I believe they are going good so far. Also, how long did it take for themselves to mount to the wood without the need for wire/ fishing line?

I bought my staghorn ferns wrapped in sphagnum moss and then in a wire wrap. This is how the plant hangs on a hook on its wooden plaque. Should I take it out of the wire wrap and mount it directly on the wood plaque long term? It is continuing to grow fertile fronds and basal fronds but the basal ones are small. Would they prefer to be mounted directly on the plaque or does it not make a difference? Thank you!
I have a huge neglected stag horn fern that I rescued. The fertile fronds look limp and withered. Do they recuperate if watered? Idk if I should trim back and start new.....divide it up? because it's too large to deal with!
What type of wood do we use to mount the stag horn? And should it be natural with no finish on it?

I have a huge staghorn, and 2 smaller ones. I am shifting and want to take the smaller ones with me. They are healthy but have lots of dead looking leaves behind them. Can I cut them out?
Could you please tell me what to use to kill a borer that has got into the basal leaf that wraps around the mounting board?

hi! I just found you and I've also subscribed ;) I got a stag horn a few weeks ago.... unfortunately, I didn't look up the care right away... I assumed that it needed the same care as my other ferns (OOF). Anyhoo - when I bought it, it was in soil (another OOF?) and I kept it very moist for a couple weeks. I then noticed the the shield was turning brown and is kinda squishy, so I thought I killed it from overwatering. NOW I notice that some of your plants have brown shields - is this normal? second question - one of the fertile fronds has some white on the tip... do you know what causes this? thanks so much !
My mom has two. One of which, my son has been sawing apart to share with family and friends. He’s sharing them because my dad, his grandpa, has had them for 20+ years and died about 2 years ago. The other is hung by wire from a pine tree. It’s at least 8 feet around. The one he’s cutting apart was larger and actually broke the tree limb!

mine is in a basket type of thing with all its moss, is it necessary to mount it on something else? it's not doing too good, i might be watering it too much. new to plants so i feel helpless haha
okay question: Do you face the window with the top of your phone pointed at the window to determine direction with the compass app? or do face the opposite way?

Should be towards the window. This will tell you which way the window faces. For example, my windows face the eastward sky. The sun rises in the east so I get more direct morning light as the sun is rising. 😊

Betsy, do you have any trouble with mold/mildew on your boards or moss due to the moisture? I've been wanting to make one of these with a Hoya, but my apartment is at about 60% humidity most of the time so mold is a BIG concern. :) Your videos are amah-zing, btw! Keep 'em comin!

That is so beautiful! Those boards look like oak wood to me. Did you buy them like that or have you made them yourself? I'd really love to have a platycerium in my home, but I don't think I have any good spot with the right light conditions...
currently looking to tie one of two still potted seedlings i have to cork bark. a few sources say to be careful to mount them right side up, particular if they are mounted vertically.
sounds like it's worth mentioning, but now i'm speculating where "up" is on mine. :D
😂 Yeah it can be kind of hard to tell depending on the fern.
Just thought I’d mention about dry conditions: you’re right. South Australia is one of the driest climates going around. Next to no humidity. Yet Staghorns are a popular edition to outside patios, and I’ve seen some whoppers!
Humidity kills stags. Humidity burn is a growing problem due to climate change.
Ok this is may be dumb question. But does the wet sphagnum moss attract fungus gnats? I had a terrible infestation over the summer that took months to get rid of. I really want one to join my collection.

I do not have fungus gnats in my ferns, only in my potted plants. I haven't had any trouble with them in the sphagnum moss at all.

My friend just gifted me two big beautiful staghorn ferns. Idk if I want to mount mine or do a kokedama ball for them. Would you recommend a kokedama ball for this plant?
I have zero experience with kokedama.
ypu also have to make ventilation holes in the pot if you plant them in bark moss mix like orchids
Hi Besty, I was aways curious about those big beauties hanging out on the wall behind you in your vids. I love their look & that they are low maintenance. Do you think I could also mount a Tillandsia the same way? Also, Do you have any Philodendron selloum or Hope or Monstera deliciosa? If so, would love for you to do care video. Thanks :)
Hey there! Tillandsia can be pretty much glued to anything as far as I'm aware. Damp sphagnum moss might cause the base to rot, but people mount them on wood with glue or wire. As long as they can be soaked once a week or kept humid they could be attached to anything you want!
As for Philodendron, I don't have any yet. I just bought a tiny Monstera deliciosa but maybe when it gets a little bigger I'll do a care video about them! Or if I finally go out and buy a more mature plant. 😊 Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep it in mind.
I don't have a lot of space for big plants so I haven't set my eyes on any of the big Philos. However I have a big parlor palm that I don't find very appealing and I've been thinking about replacing it with something else. 🤔
@@betsybegonia Thanks for the advice! The possibility of them rotting in the sphagnum moss didn't even occur to me. So, glad you brought that up. I completely understand not wanting to fill your space up with big plants. I'm struggling myself with the lack of space. I'm a rather small petite person and my husband thinks it's hilarious to watch me water my monster plants. When I'm walking down the hall with them to water them in the bath tub you can only see a huge plant with legs. Looking forward to your next video as always. Take care. :)

Hi Betsy! I love your videos! My staghorn fern is putting out lots of female fronds but no basil/male fronds. I’ve had it over a year and it used to have the basil fronds but no more! How can I encourage them to come back? Thank you!!!
That's a pretty good question. I think it's simply a matter of care and patience. One of mine took a long, long time to show any signs of them.
I mounted a large staghorn on basswood from Joanns about 2 weeks ago- and the back has been molding?? Just a slight fuzz of white mold. Anything I'm doing wrong? I'm watering them how you do yours and I let them drip dry too. Thanks!!!!!!
Sounds like it's rotting, I'm sorry. The wood that I purchased is oak and it's glued laminated timber. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glued_laminated_timber

We have a massive stag horn that I would like remove some of them and place them on wood to become individuals. How do you separate them from a large plant?

Hmm, depends on the type of brown. If it's dry and crispy brown then it might be under watered or it might not have enough humidity. If it's mushy brown, it might be rot.

Nope, not as far as I'm aware. I've had these for months and months and it's never been an issue.
I love staghorn ferns, they are so pretty! And they look amazing like that on a piece of wood. Betsy, have you had any issues with fungus gnats? If so, could talk about it? Thanks for sharing
It's like you're psychic! I just ordered nematodes online an hour ago because I have a fungus gnat issue.
In the past, I was able to mostly rid myself of an infestation by using hydrogen peroxide diluted with water in the soil (kills the larvae) and then I put diatomaceous earth atop the soil, which is supposed to get in their joints and stop up their movement like shards of broken glass. Brutal. This worked to some extent, but it took a long time and a few applications and a lot of patience and determination, and they came back.
I was recently told about beneficial nematodes (Steinernema feltiae to be specific), which are supposed to be the best treatment against fungus gnat larvae. I am planning to make a video about this and I'll share my experience!

Oops, I should say I haven't had any fungus gnats in my ferns or sphagnum moss. Only in my potted plants!
@@betsybegonia ooh, haha! Our plants are connecting us 😍 i really didn't know about the h2o2 would kill the larvae! I must try that. I've heard cinnamon powder is also great. I've been using a mosquito bits that's a biological mosquito control and I've ordered a few fly traps. They've killed 2 potted plants that were big and pretty, that got me mad 😭 can't wait for that new video 💚

You could do this with any epiphyte really. People do it with Hoya and Orchid.

I don't soak them. I just spray them with water until they're saturated and then leave them overnight and hang them back up in the morning when the wood is dry.
hey betsy! just subbed (mostly due to that alluring way you suggested we subscribe haha)! Quick question about the stag horns. The third one you showed us on the way has a fertile frond that has a white tip. Is that normal? I️ have two stag horns and they both have a couple fronds with the white tips and I️ thought I️ was doing something wrong (over watering, not enough light, etc) but was curious if you had an explanation. thanks! love the content btw!
Aha, you fell right into my trap. 😀 As for the white tip, I know exactly what you're talking about, but it was white when I purchased it and nothing has changed since. I'd say that... unless it turns brown (necrosis), it's doing okay. I've had these for about 5 months and it has only shown signs of growing and thriving, so I don't think the white is necessarily a sign of impending doom.
That's all I can really say for now, as I am unsure what's caused it. They haven't developed white tips under my care so I can't give a full assessment of what could have caused it and I'm unsure whether it's completely normal or not.

New Subscriber. I thought that they needed to be fertilized once in a while. Do you just use tap water every time? i read a 20/20/20 fertilizer is used by some, but yours seem very healthy. I had one many years ago and used fish emulsion fertilizer.......stinky stinky, but it worked well. LOL. I tried to grow a small one on a wooden plaque a couple of years ago, but I now see I didnt use enough moss and it kept drying out in the outside heat and eventually died. The one will have an ample amount to keep it hydrated. Thanks for the information!

I am not a horticulturist. In fact, my obsession with plants started only a year ago. I have an unrelated career that I enjoy, but I love learning about plant care in my free time!
I know this is an older video, but I’m a newer subscriber, and... creeping all the older videos, is it creeping if it’s out there? I mean you expect people to go back and watch older content, so maybe it’s like a welcome creep? OKAY, ANYWAY. I was curious about these ferns, because friends of mine recently bought me a bromeliad to add to my constantly growing plant collection, and I was wondering if you knew, or had opinions on whether or not a mounting method like this would work for one of those. It’s a guzmania bromeliad, they’re all over grocery stores here in Canada right now, and it’s in a little pot, but I wanna jazz it up, but without sticking it in a saxophone or something. However you water it like a cup, not the roots, so would the moss need water, and would that rot the bromeliad? Because I dunno!
Orientation -- how do we know which way is up?
Are you worried about the wall rotting at all as the plants require soaking weekly ?
I let the wood dry before I hang the plants back up. I have never had any issues with that, the wall is never wet.
Okay cool. And does the wood plank start to get water lines/warp over time? Or you usually just run water over plant to soak it and not dunk the whole board in water ? Just trying to figure out maintenance because I made a board and am ready to mount! Was thinking of putting a resin over the cedar to protect it... but don’t know if that would be good for the plant either. Any opinions on that?

I’m fascinated by these creatures. Sadly all our walls are concrete and I’m not really into trying to drill into them. If and when I figure out some reliable 3M hook type situation I may give it a go. I am, however, mildly traumatized by how often the ones back home used to drop my pots and pans and unsure about how they might stick to the concrete. Any watchers in Europe who have the same issue and have a solution please feel free to share! All the best!
Our walls are also concrete. It took me 3 days to drill these holes. 😂 I finally found a "pro" drill bit from the local hardware store and it does a much better job getting through the impossible concrete. We could probably benefit from having a better drill, too. I've taken a break from decorating my apartment because drilling holes in the walls is so utterly exhausting.
Betsy Begonia one of my friends back home is very taken with some time she spent in Germany so always going on about how great the concrete walls are and while I agree for privacy reasons, decorating is stressful for sure. Thanks so much for replying to ALLLLL my comments, you are so sweet :)
