I’ve been a musician for 34 years and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything as interesting as this. I am certainly a fan of Phish and I was there that evening when they played this. It is a memory I will cherish forever. The fact that this jam, this specific jam has lived on this long is beyond exciting. Great job Amar. This is superb.
I have always felt like "jam" was a language I could hear and understand but not speak or write. This is like the Rosetta Stone of improvised music and I think it may be the key to world peace.
I have the head of the burnt effigy from WENT in my living room lol. I FULLY remember this Gin and it left us all truly in tears of joy. The whole fest was bonkers.
Wow! That "match" blew my mind when it lit all those paintings! If you've ever been to a Phish show, you carry a little bit of musical history with you!
Went was my first Phish show and over 25 years and 100+ shows later, this Gin is still my absolute favorite. Others come close, but this one always stuck because of the fumbling recovery by Trey and Fishman. It is just a beautiful jam. Thanks for breaking this down the way that you did! Great video!
In my opinion, the most perfect note ever played by Trey is heard in this video @ 18:31 (happens over that one second). It's the twisting howl that ends that long whirling climax. 25 years later this Gin still gives me ecstatic chills. Excellent choice Mr. amarguitar.
I was there ;-) Pushed to the front for one set... transcendent. Afterwards, we're walking back to camp and my buddy Ted says "Trey didn't hit a sour note! Awesome video. I didn't know about the Rhapsody connection.
I listen to the went Gin on repeat (4:44 - 14:44) daily, sometimes for hours on end. I didn't know I could appreciate it anymore than I already did. This analysis is a fantastic portrayal of Phish as a whole through one little pinhole of a jam. The musical history lesson, tying in Rhapsody... I had no idea! 10/10. Thank You for making this.
Hey, never commented on a TH-cam video before but had to on this one...I've watched that Went Gin video 100+ times over the years. As a musician and avid student of Phish shows, it was truly remarkable to see you break it down this way. Must have taken a lot of time and effort. Excited to follow your channel more closely, and keep up the great work - lots of people enjoy it.
Dude I just had an insane emotional response to this video, and the breakdown within. Literally almost crying at my desk at work. Beautifully analyzed and expertly put into words, what I feel during those moments. Bravo
Most bands spend years creating songs to be proud of...Phish has created several dozen, practically on the spot. That is the answer to why people travel several hundred to thousands of miles to see them.
I'm gonna be honest, I had no idea what was this video about and I was not really into Phish. After watching the video, I'm really tempted to learn their technique, style and I feel a little more intelligent. Thanks for these great videos, man.
Vyom Deepansh : I just discovered Phish 6 months ago and I stopped learning keyboards and went back to guitar because Trey opened up so many landscapes for me to explore.
Wow man - that was really something else! This video alone just might have the ability to turn some people onto Phish. Or at least help many understand what's going on. I love this "Anatomy of a Jam" idea. Top editing as well. Drew me in from beginning to end and taught me a lot. Now I think I'm gonna go listen to some Great Went!
You are my new favorite you tuber. Your educated musical perspective adds to depth of understanding the “IT” of Phish. Blessed to be present for this event, thanks to some amazing friends, your insights help me understand what happened. I bet you are a monster musician. Your production level is off the charts, I can’t wait share you amarguitar.
There with you, the sound there was different than anywhere else I've been, it just seemed so open and booming, cant really describe it, like the old saying just had to be there
Wow. I'm 43. Saw my first show in 1993. I was present at The Great Went for this jam. I've listened to the Went Gin a million times since. However, your incredible analysis of this jam made me feel like I was hearing it again for the first time. Excellent work on this. I'm surprised I am just now stumbling upon this, 2 years later.
7:55 this is why Jam Bands are just the best and especially Phish. They listen off each other and they now have diffrent codes and movements to show when to move on or stay or when to change tone. Its insane!
Unbelievable analysis!! Also, your statement at the end: "Because it's never just about the notes, the chords, the scales, but it's about our ability to come together and appreciate the magic . . that they create." That's a great way of summarizing that indescribable feeling you get when you're at a Phish show, be it the 1st, or the 127th. It's that feeling that's so hard to describe to someone who asks you: "so what's a Phish show like?" We always end up telling 'em some variation of: "You just have to experience it." Thank you for this PHANtastic video!! Sub'd!!
This version still gives me chilly bumps. Top notch improv, it doesn’t get any better then this. Whisks me back to the Went every time I hear it. Thx for the dissection, fascinating stuff!
This is so well done. Nice job. When someone wants to know "why Phish?" ... this is what I'll show them. It's why I've always called them musicians' musicians.
dude how does this not have more views - i don't know the music term and you explained something that i love brilliantly and understandably. 90's phish was something else.
This is my favorite gin ..ive had this song stuck in my shity disc player ..so i listened to for 3 yrs driving all over the country whether i liked or not ...i ended up loving it ..it became my road song ..i still jam it every fuckn time as i shove off for another adventure...thank u for the video
I can't believe I only just discovered this gem of a video. My son and I are avid Phans. Placing Phish within the history of American music is brilliant and so insightful. Gershwin! I understand now why my 60 year old lady self is loving this band so much.
Man, this was such a GREAT video----the production, the narration, the musical teaching, the cultural appreciation---I could go on. All I know is I'm glad I watched it. I'll keep it in my back pocket for friends who are open to learning more about what makes Phish so great.
This breakdown takes me to a new place. I was there in 97’ going crazy but you explain this in a way that makes me see what I was hearing. Unreal breakdown of an amazing song
Wow! Dude, thank you thank you thank you so much! My whole life I've been listening to live music and am an average guitar player. Have always been at awe and appreciated watching pros like this have a conversation on stage. my brain has always been able to recognize the shifts and the changes and the natural reactions that come from it, but the way you broke it down and explained it is one of the coolest things that I've ever seen I appreciate it so so much. It definitely has put a lot of context to what I had felt all along and I'm so glad that I stumbled across you. I've subscribed and now plan on watching many of your videos you are awesome thank you
Wow Amar!! Another fine example of your ability to dissect a very special phish jam, not only theoretically but also historically. You have something very special here in these videos, I've noticed it since day one and I can't wait for the next one. Seriously man, thank you...
This is great. It's something I can share with people to introduce them to Phish to understand partly what they are about. Steve Lillywhite, who produced Billy Breathes, described they way they improvise as being similar to how a flock of birds flies together. I like that. I always say that I'm not a Phishhead, I just like their music, but I think I am becoming one.
Amar, these videos are incredible and have allowed me to experience and understand Phish in a whole new way. This video in particular makes me so excited to have tangible evidence to the things I hear in these jams but can't quite articulate. It has also helped me appreciate the members of the band in a way that I didn't before. I've known they are expert musicians but to see the actual evidence of how they drive the jam in a new direction or support one another's improv is so rewarding! Thanks again and keep up the great work!
Love this video, thanks. Always knew that Gordon note was the turning point of the jam but didn't realize the specifics. Great explanations. Been self taught for 20+yrs but really appreciate this in depth explanation.
So very well done, dude. I hate to say "those of us classically trained know this", but we do, and it's why we love going to shows. We may not know the exact modes they've moved through or even know exactly how the development got us to whatever point in the jam, we know they are following true music theory, not just a wondering jam. I knew it the moment I started listening to them. I wonder how many of us are classically trained/got degrees in music?
Oh, I'd also love to add the 8/10/97 Harry Hood to the list. I've heard people say Mike shifts them down into a minor jam, but never really wrapped my head around what that meant...
Typically, when people talk about shifting into a "minor" they are talking about a shift of the third interval (third note in the scale) down one half step (one fret on the guitar or one key on the piano). This simple change of one note in the scale changes the emotional context from "happy" major feel to a "thoughtful/moody" minor feel. In the case of this song, the narrator discusses the band's shift into C mixolydian, which has a flat seventh. It has a similar effect. The use of modes in music can be confusing, and I won't bore you with it here. If you have interest in music theory, check out Adam Neeley and SamuraiGuitarist. They both offer relatively simple explanations. Also check out examples - and there are plenty here on TH-cam - when people transpose songs from minor to major keys and vice versa. Hearing the Darth Vader theme in major key is quite different than its intended minor key simply by changing one note. Hope this helps.
I've never thought of the 'love to take a bath' singalong being a take on dirty hippies, just seems like a really good line at the right moment. I can see it now but never occurred to me.
This is absolutely amazing. Thank you. I have said since that night that the Went Gin was better than the amazing Murat Gin of 1993, which in many circles was considered the best. This deconstructs it for guitar players who love to improvise (like me) and for phish geeks (also like me) that love where a jam can go but would not understand progressions, mixolydian or even major scales, and how the players intertwining with their own HEY and leading into a different direction ultimately into Type 2 jamming. Well done!!
This was just absolutely awesome. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. Really impressive stuff. If you are looking at possibilities for a future Anatomy of a Jam, perhaps one of the all time great YEM jams: 06/11/94. That jam cooks from start to finish. Again thanks so much for doing these, I'm really digging them.
Not right music, I was thinking the same thing. Many people, especially those that are not musicians or musical at all, just can't understand the complexity of whats going on in such an amazing jam like went gin. I imagine it just sounds like a bunch of mush to them almost like those funny overdubs of fish jams where it's just some guy monkeying around on a guitar and keyboard to be funny. But if someone takes the time to watch this (doubt they'd have the patience, which is needed to enjoy Phish) they might get a peak into why we love this so much. The way this is described is exactly what I think about when I'm listening to these jams, following the notes and where the melodies are cresting and troughing. I really enjoyed this video, keep it up!
I don’t really GAF about Phish but this is one of the most interesting and thoughtful things on TH-cam. Would love to see some new ones maybe some GD? Hope all is well
It’s at the 17:14 part of this video when I think the most important moment happens. Fish switches up what he been playing to create a groove for the rest of the jam to ride on.
What jam would you suggest for a future episode of Anatomy of a Jam?
Split Open & Melt 12/31/99
amarguitar simple 7/15/17
th-cam.com/video/km2MlSothJc/w-d-xo.html
fukuoka twist > jam
I'll add two I think would be awesome - Hood from 12/31/93 and the Chalkdust from Camden 7/10/99.
I’ve been a musician for 34 years and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything as interesting as this. I am certainly a fan of Phish and I was there that evening when they played this. This is like 30 for 30, but for Phans. Freaking awesome! Thank you so much!
I have the head of the burnt effigy from WENT in my living room lol. I FULLY remember this Gin and it left us all truly in tears of joy. The whole fest was bonkers.
Wow! That "match" blew my mind when it lit all those paintings! If you've ever been to a Phish show, you carry a little bit of musical history with you!
i think you deserve some kind of award for your productions . cheers
I am speechless, not by the boys amazing musicianship but by your analysis and beautifully pieced together video mini documentary.
dude - unbelievable analysis - and incredible video editing. well done.

Awesome video. I didn't know about the Rhapsody connection.
Not sure how this just showed up in my feed 5 years later (thanks algorithm) - but this is awesome.
This is unreal. Well done. Love the Gershwin crossover/history lesson.
I listen to the went Gin on repeat (4:44 - 14:44) daily, sometimes for hours on end. I didn't know I could appreciate it anymore than I already did. @amarguitar, PLEASE do everything’s right from 12-30-18 the last 4 minutes is truly the greatest improvised piece. GOATED
Dude I just had an insane emotional response to this video, and the breakdown within. Literally almost crying at my desk at work. Beautifully analyzed and expertly put into words, what I feel during those moments. Bravo
I cried.
I was there, the air way up there just felt different that weekend, the music just seemed crisp and clear, oh and the parking was second to none too
Hey, I might have parked or camped right next to you! Wait, 70,000 people, maybe not. But we probably met at the toilet line!
Most bands spend years creating songs to be proud of...Phish has created several dozen, practically on the spot. That is the answer to why people travel several hundred to thousands of miles to see them.

I know right!
all of the members are powerhouses...
Greatest band of all time.
@@travisalexander7302 perfectly said, spot on.
I teared up a little at the end.

Totally #$@%!ing agree
Concept and execution of these Anatomy of a Jam videos are great- do more of these!
This. Was. AMAZING. Thank you. The musical knowledge of this band is unparalleled.

To this day my favorite weekend of seeing the boys live. This Gin is my all time favorite jam. Electric.
There with you, the sound there was different than anywhere else I've been, it just seemed so open and booming, cant really describe it, like the old saying just had to be there
1997 was best year of Phish

This is the best video on the internet relating to phish. I went to music school. This is gold. I just can't even. Dude thank you!!!!

This is the greatest TH-cam video of all time
I still watch this video at least once a week. What a fantastic video and explanation.
Finally a non cringe Phish TH-camr. These are GREAT vids.
Oh god I cringed the whole time. It’s fucking basic as shit. The only thing that saves this piece of garbage is Treys inspired playing.
Truly genius content. Thank you for shedding light on the magic behind the music!
These are always simply astonishing
This breakdown takes me to a new place. I was there in 97’ going crazy but you explain this in a way that makes me see what I was hearing. Unreal breakdown of an amazing song
I love this video so much. Revisit it every couple years. Thank you!
Incredibly well done! Wow. Thanks for all the hard work, and one of my all time favorite improvisations.
Wow! Dude, thank you thank you thank you so much! My whole life I've been listening to live music and am an average guitar player. Thank you for explaining this in a way that I can understand.
Great breakdown, I really appreciate thoughtful explanation of theory in this wonderful jam.
This made is cry. You are unbelievable
So good...takes me back to this unforgettable moment in time. Thank you for bringing it back!
This is incredibly well done! I'm looking forward to more analyses, and I'd love to see a video of the Tahoe Tweezer analyzed
This is great. It's something I can share with people to introduce them to Phish to understand partly what they are about. Unreal how much this has helped my playing. Thanks.
You do such an amazing job defining what Phish is all about. Thank you.
Amar, these videos are incredible and have allowed me to experience and understand Phish in a whole new way. Awesome, I really appreciate this.
Thank you
I like the sub sections you added. This is still one of my favorite vids of yours
I kept putting watching this video off... that was the best video I’ve seen on improvisation EVER! Thank you 🙏
These takes on their art are great!
thank you for making this! beautiful analysis
This is really awesome man, love the history behind the song! Keep up the great work!
Good work my friend. As someone who was there and it was amazing. I've been chasing that jam ever since that day.
Love this video, thanks. Always knew that Gordon note was the turning point of the jam but didn't realize the specifics. Great explanations. Been self taught for 20+yrs but really appreciate this in depth explanation.
Such a great video. What a way to start the day!!!

Dude your the man!!!! The way you break it down is genius!
Solid insights into the magic of this music! Thank You!🙏👍
I conclude with all of the other comments, you fucking killed it on this video. Great job breaking down an otherworldly jam
Outstanding. One of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time. Can’t wait for the next installment.
When and where can I buy you a beer? Please keep these coming!
Awesome anatomy of a jam Amar. Excellent video production. Really well done
So incredible. Thank you. My composition degree feels useless now!

please keep doing these!! this was fantastic and totally fascinating.
Good Lord this is incredible stuff
Epic jam, awesome video. Thanks dude!
I am absolutely in love with your channel. I LOVE the theory in it. Can't wait for more!
how am I just now finding you!! Thanks a mil
Man... what a great breakdown. Everything was so well done. Can't wait for more, thanks!
Outstanding job
I've never thought of the 'love to take a bath' singalong being a take on dirty hippies, just seems like a really good line at the right moment. I can see it now but never occurred to me.

Well done!!
this is absolutely incredible , please make more videos like this!!!!!
That was as epic as The Went Gin itself!
Outstanding video
This was just absolutely awesome. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. Really impressive stuff. If you are looking at possibilities for a future Anatomy of a Jam, perhaps one of the all time great YEM jams: 06/11/94. That jam cooks from start to finish. This is awesome. Amazing work.
Nice work Brahmen.
This was just really well done.
Awesome breakdown!
Please make more of these
It’s at the 17:14 part of this video when I think the most important moment happens. Fish switches up what he been playing to create a groove for the rest of the jam to ride on.
This was awesome. Thank you
God damn this is incredible stuff. Thank you so much, from a musician.
Like seriously, I just want to comment 4,000 times over how much I love this analysis of one of my favorite jams ever.
Well thought out.
