  • The population pulse model is a graphical representation of how natural populations pulse through time. For example, an annual reproductive event produces many new individuals, and the population size rapidly expands. Then, ecological circumstances cause the departure of members, and the population gradually decreases. This declining trend continues until the next reproductive burst.
The result is a dynamic population that rapidly expands, then slowly contracts, then rapidly expands, then slowly contracts... over and over. In this way, populations can be imagined as possessing a sort of rhythm as they pulse from generation-to-generation.
