Interesting. A cool technique I sometimes use for lakers, specs and splake suspended over deeper water when I’m tired of jigging, or eating or cigar smoking or coffee drinking, is just leave the jig (Rapala, spoon, tube or rubber minnow) 1/2 way up the water column and watch the flasher. It can attract fish from afar, then pick the rod up and start jigging if you see a mark,
Sweet fish. Ive never caught trout but when I crappie fish through the ice, I like to use the scoop like a net to save my sleeves from getting soaked having to reach in.
Our ice is horrible this year in Montana. I managed to sneak out yesterday and put 7 on the ice between 3-5lbs. All the rainbows are massive in Canyon Ferry reservoir MT.
@spiltmilt indeed. We manage some decent perch fishing and a few walleyes but the bows are king here. Come mid to late season it gets kind of annoying 😂
Well, you got me super excited for our local lakes to freeze up and also plan some adventures to some other bodies of water. Based on the numerous questions and what i have researched you have a needle in a haystack regarding your tip up. Looks like a great piece of equipment and its a shame its no longer available.
beautiful fish man! first ice trout are always a challenge, you almost have to be ready to go bicep deep in the water to land em lol....keep Grinding!!
I also love that dead stick! I always use a jawjacker and have felt that the hook sets sometimes don’t Sind in like the whole rod setting the hook… id like to know what brand that is? Or did you design that? Any plan on heading to holter this winter to track down those monster kokanee? I’m gonna try to start figuring out that lake.
Well, you sure know how to build excitement for guys who are unfortunate enough to not have any good ice yet... Your reaction when losing that first fish cracked me up. Here is my own "tale of woe". I spend the winter on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, because the weather is mild enough for open water fishing all winter. The lake I fish is 30-mile long and populated by notoriously picky fish, especially in winter. Sometimes at that lake I will be lucky to get one or two hits at sunset, after trolling all afternoon with no hits. There is no morning bite in winter at that lake. November 5: after waiting NINE MONTHS to fish that lake again, it is the typical suspense: I troll all afternoon with no hits. I have not seen any floating debris the whole day. At sunset I hook a nice 16 inch fish. I can almost taste that fish in my mouth. I bring the fish to the boat without issue. I need to keep the boat in gear when fighting fish, because I fish 2 rods in shallow water and this lake is a "snag fest". Just as I am about to net the fish, I see that there is a large floating branch just about to collide with the fish! There is absolutely nothing I can do to avoid the coming disaster... The branch is too large to fit in the net, and the fish is still just outside of my reach. The fish's head slowly slides over the branch, with the perfect angle to leverage the barbless hook out of the fish's mouth, and the fish slowly swims away... There is a fair amount of swearing in French. What are the odds that the ONLY floating branch I see all day, on a 30-mile lake, has to be in the perfect place and time to collide with the ONLY fish I caught all day? Am I cursed? I have no guarantee that I will have another opportunity to hook a fish before the bite stops because of coming darkness, and sometimes it can be days before I get the chance to fish again because of weather. I am crushed. I quickly put the line back in the water and hope for the best. Fortunately, in the last few minutes of fishable light I hook and land without incident a 15 inch trout that saves the day. (P.S. Since that first day the fishing has vastly improved for me, including releasing a trophy 6 lb cutthroat. Link to my website is in my profile to see pictures of that fish)
That’s awesome man! No safe ice here in Utah yet. What is that automatic hook setter you have? The only ones I’ve ever been able to find are the jawjackers. I really like how yours looks though and would be interested in getting one
Hey Tyler. Always love the videos. I have the same trap(Salmon Bear). In the beginning you say you prefer mono for the stretch. What do you think the advantages are? I’ve run a pretty stiff rod with braid on mine. Do think some more give is better?

This can’t be, must be some kind of AI generated hocus-pocus😅. It’s so mild in the Cariboo region of British Columbia that it’s strange to watch someone ice fishing. Thanks for posting.
@@spiltmiltThank you for the response. Can you please elaborate on this stretchier version of mono in relation to the medium light rod 2:30 ? Is it the stiffer the rod the more stretch you would like in your line? In order to keep fish pinned with the dead stick method?

Last one was the biggest and best of the day. What a day!!
Your ice fishing videos are so relaxing. Ever since watching you last year I’ve been in love with ice fishing.
Absolute toads on the UL ice rods. Those dead-stick hook set takes were awesome.
Sweet fish. Ive never caught trout but when I crappie fish through the ice, I like to use the scoop like a net to save my sleeves from getting soaked having to reach in.
Always appreciate your information, looking forward to getting out ice fishing this year!
Thanks for fishing Eagle Claw!
Very excited to try out your new Kokanee Featherlight Pro rods.
Thanks!

Yeah that whole Canyon Ferry to Holter system is impressive for big bows.

Nilan Reservoir has tank rainbows and good ice… spawn sacs & gold Swedish pimples.
Still waiting for ice in central Montana this year. Hoping to go after Kokanee on Deadman's Reservoir if the ice gets thick enough.
That second fish looked like a cut bow hybrid to me. Had the orange hit on the throat and the spots of a cutthroat.

If Holter is still capped in March I will fish it.
That was kinda funny, 1:10 that first one you hooked I said thats big fish the exact same time you did
Beautiful tanks!!
Hogs! Another great video!
Studs!! Wish our rainbows here in Maine are that agreeable!!
Love youre videos 👍👍👍
Those are some hogs! Nice one
Super nice fish ! What brand of automatic hook setter were you using? Thanks.
I'd like to know too
Alaska Fish Trap out of business
You list rod, reel, line... What is that hook setting rod holder you are using? The auto-hook setters I am using don't work worth beans....
@3:13: tgat was such a big Rainbow. I swore really loudly when it got off.
Nice video, thanks for sharing. No ice yet here in n. Idaho.
North Idaho is much warmer than north-central Washington.

Man those are pretty fish! Hey what brand is that rod holding tip up? Thanks!
I've seen guys using the lip gripper pliers... I've never used one, but maybe it's time to invest in a set.
Another great videoTyler !!! Thanks !!!!
Lips grips seriously damage trout jaws.
@spiltmilt ahh good to know...
Thank you !!!
Hitting the ice tomorrow!
Good luck!
Thanks, hopefully the kokes are hungry!
Great video, could you describe the type of scud fly?

I was about to ask the same thing
They are out of business and have been for years.
Scofield is looking safe and the uintas have been safe for a while.
Scofield is frozen, I was on it yesterday
@@chubbrock659what did you have luck on out there on scofield? if you don’t mind me asking

I am fishing barbless hooks so having that extra stretch helps keep tension on the hook.
I’m subscribed but can’t find the links for the scuds in the description? Great videos

Thanks for an amazing video.. I have a question: What kind of tip up do you have?
damn, this is videos very nice guys
Nice
Good morning, Tyler. I'm beginning to consider a underwater camera to see below me fishing at lakes. Any recommendations?
The Marcum Pursuit HD is hard to beat for size, clarity, and built in recording. amzn.to/4gvYS1T
Curious as to what type or name brand of "Rod Tip Up" you're using in this video. And, if you have a link to it from your Amazon Associate account?
Doesn't exist anymore. They went out of business.
Patterson?
What’s on the business end of the dead stick?
Scud fly
Love the content as always Tyler! What is that hooksetter? I need one of those! When are you coming up to the Yukon? ;)
Its called an Alaska Fishtrap but they went out business years ago. I want to get up to the Yukon and try some Inconnu at some point.
I’m subscribed but there are no links in the description?

What kind of auto setter is on your dead stick rod?
One that isn't available anymore. Read the other comments.
Do you have a size preference on these scud flies (8, 12, 14)?
Smaller is better 12's and 14's
