Just realizing, and coming to terms with, the fact that my Redskins are now officially retro. Things that are retro were typically cool/successful for a time, no longer exist, and elicit nostalgia. Sadly, we're alone in this among the classic NFL franchises. Also, every time I watch one of these old games, the commentators say at least one thing that sounds borderline outlandish today because of how far the Redskins' reputation fell under Dan Snyder. This game's version of that was Dan Fouts calling the Skins "A team with so much history, so much class."
This game was on a Saturday afternoon. I spent the afternoon in Henderson Nevada on the back of a garbage truck. I was happy to see the REDSKINS win but bummed out that they did not make the playoffs.
The 89 Skins lost their first 2 games at home both blowing leads late to the Giants & Eagles. They won 5 straight to end with a 10-6 record but missed out on the Wildcard as both Philly & the Rams were 11-5. It's crazy how well I remember the 89 season, I was like the geek of geeks that year
Gary Clark of the Washington Redskins conducted at least 3 football camps at Native American reservations during his career. He wanted to know if they thought the Redskins name was racist. What he saw was Native Americans wearing Redskins gear and saying that they were proud to be a Redskin fan and the 5% that weren’t Redskins fans were Cowboys fans and that’s why they didn’t like the name.

All four Saturday afternoon games played in the last two weeks of the 1989 season were shutouts. In Week 15 the Giants beat Dallas 15-0 and Denver beat Arizona 37-0. In the final week, the Bills beat the Jets 37-0 the game before this one, and this one ended 29-0.
I remember watching this game on the coldest day in New Orleans history. High temperature outside was 16 degrees!! An arctic cold front came down to Texas thru Florida and the temperature remained frigid for days.

@@johntabler349Washington's last game of the year too. The 49ers blew out everyone in the playoffs to cap off their team of the decade run. The Skins watched it from their TV sets.
@@johntabler349 I actually wish Washington would have qualified. Probably would have given the 49ers their toughest game. Better than the Vikings, rams or Broncos.
At this point they still considered Riggs the featured runner assuming he was going to be able to bounce back to old form, of course Ernest Byner had become so useful as a do all player Gibbs was originally reluctant to use him as an every down runner plus Rypen was still plagued by injury the following year but you are correct the key components are in place
@@johntabler349 I think they were scared of Byner "fumbling issues" from what I read, meanwhile they gave Morris alot of burn too who was basically Timmy Smith without a Super Bowl show out...
@@NoBullsh_t possibly though Byner really wasn't a fumble prone back (just that one everyone remembers) and Riggs who was very sure handed in Atlanta did have trouble holding on to the ball in Washington. I don't think they ever looked at Morris as a number 1 guy but hoped he'd give them a reliable number 2 and a different look from the bigger backs later on it seems Morris became a more hesitant runner after a few fumbles of his own and kind of faded out of the plans when Brian Mitchell came along
@@johntabler349 didn't help that in '88 Bryant was averaging like five yards a carry before he got hurt and Smith and Morris were barely averaging three yards a carry behind the same line..
@@johntabler349 Gibbs stated in the Washington Post that year that putting Byner at H-B would limit his opportunities to fumble, so yeah their were some concerns, lol meanwhile Rypien was pretty much coughing the ball up every time he got sacked that year lol, go figure...

Many New Orleans plumbers got filthy rich in the last week of 1989.
It was so cold the Saints had a winning record that year the Superdome was a little more than half full for the Saints ,Colts game that day.
This was the beginning of some real tough times in Seahawks history. A one win season was soon on our horizon. Siggghhh.
