The Bills and Browns played a classic shootout on an ice cold field during the 1989 AFC Divisional Playoff Game. The weather proved to be a a tough challenge as touchdowns were given up and field goals were lost due to slipping. With the field giving an equal treatment of mishaps to both teams, the game came down to a game saving interception by Browns linebacker Clay Mathews at his own 1 yard line with 3 seconds remaining in the game.

Surprised to find you here commenting in a Browns video. I still remember Metcalf making that zig zag hop into the end zone against the Bengals on Monday Night Football. Or his two TD returns against the Steelers for the win in a night game. Even so, Belichick utilized him poorly. Metcalf up the middle was one of the worst designed plays of that era.
Metcalf should be in the PFHOF. Way ahead of his time. Could take over whole games by himself.

As a Bills fan, this game broke my heart, but man I'll tell you....THIS was real football. Ancient stadium, beat up turf, rabid fans, hard hits, two blue collar Rust Belt cities squaring off in a playoff game that literally went down to the wire. I miss the old NFL man.

It's funny you mention it, because number 82 rite there, Ozzy Newsome, is part of the reason the NFL is as pathetic as its become. As he was a member of the league's Competition Committee that instituted this asinine 'No touch of the helmet too an opponent when initiating contact', penalty this past off-season. Which essentially eliminates true tackling from the game.

I'm not a Browns fan but I do enjoy watching the Browns in the 80's. It's too bad that they didn't win at least one Super Bowl during that era.

The Broncos were up at the half. They didn’t really romp them despite the score. The Redskins had one blowout quarter but the other three quarters were pretty close. The 9ner’s game none of the Broncos showed up that game. Denver had played San Fran earlier in the year and it was close like 16-13 or 19-16, something like that. Despite Elway later saying they didn’t even belong on the field with San Fran, I think they at least could have been competitive if they actually showed up. It was like the Manning/Seahawks blowout.
Love the way NBC broadcasts this game - after each Browns score, Jones and Olsen stay silent and let the insanity of that stadium crowd just wash over you....thrilling. The pace, intensity of the home crowd, the human drama of it all is conveyed vividly.
Today's NFL TV producers should pay close attention to these games of the late 1980's/early 90's - this is the apex of NFL broadcasting.
By the way, the Browns fans of the Municipal Stadium era have never been equaled by any other fan base before or since in their devotion and enthusiasm...even the din in Minnesota after the "Minneapolis Miracle" pales in comparison to the bacchanalian mayhem that was regularly on display in Brownstown when Kosar had the Browns in yearly contention.
If the Browns ever get back to the top...this is a taste of what it might feel like.
I don't think it will be exactly like this, but pretty darn close. Crowds back then we're more blue-collar. Especially in cities like Cleveland. Today it's just not the same.

@@timlevis3630 The Browns are my AFC team due to my utter hatred for the Steelers. Lol. My favorite team in all of sports are the Eagles. I'm rooting hardcore for the Browns fans. They deserve a championship more than any fan base in all of sports. We Philadelphians got ours last year. Hoping the Cleveland folks get theirs soon. :)

In this era, Buffalo{Rich Stadium}, Washington{Rfk Stadium}, Kansas City{Arrowhead}, Denver{Mile High Stadium} were just like this. 3 Rivers got in on the act a few years later when the Steelers got good. These were the "Glory Years" of NFL crowds.
The Slaugther/Langhorne high five was so freaking cool. Not even a Browns fan.

I was at this game. I was 13 years old and it was my first Browns game. Incredible game. Some amazing sights in and outside the stadium that day. I'll never forget it.

Call me crazy but I love the Cleveland Browns colors and uniforms. They are so classic, so simple, so football perfect. I love that they have only made moderate changes, if any, through the years. I see very good things coming Cleveland’s way, all that suffering is not going to be in vain. I’m stuck here in Seattle with arguably the most hideous uniforms ever. I grew up in Connecticut and did like the Patriots as a kid, especially their old uniforms. Really wish they’d go back to them. But the Browns have always had a place in my heart. Great city, great fans. I’d love to see a game there someday.

I'm a lifelong Browns fan, lifelong Clevelander, and I was 12 years old when this game was played and I remember every second of it. I just watched the whole thing and at 41 I have chills down my spine. For those of you not from Cleveland, you have no idea what it was like at that old Municipal Stadium for a Browns game when our team was really good. What that guy in that owners box did (who btw has our current President sitting with him) to this city when he stole our team to Baltimore will never be forgiven. It has never been the same since we lost those original Browns.
This game is one for the ages. Amazing.
Put yourself in Baltimore’s shoes for losing their Football team overnight. At least you got the Browns name back unlike the Colts. The Browns name is stupid to begin with.
When both of our teams were always in the mix of the playoffs and playing well.... us bills fans and you brown fans deserve better.

1989 was the season where numerous Cleveland Browns Players spray painted their cleats orange and then spated them with white tape. That was an awesome look.
Andre Reed was AWESOME!!!!!!!! Finally got deserved HOF!
Steve Tasker or Kent Hull will be the next Bills player from that era to make it to the HOF. Cornelius Bennett and Darryl Talley may end up in Canton someday too. Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed, James Lofton, Bruce Smith, Marv Levy, and GM Bill Polian are already in and more will likely follow
@Dave Wesley Wolford was really good. But Kent Hull is one of the better centers who have ever played in my opinion. Howard Ballard and Joe Devlin were good tackles too. The Bills just had a really solid team all across the board. Their only disadvantage was their D-Line was a little undersized besides Bruce Smith. Jeff Wright, Leon Seals, and Phil Hansen would get pushed around by bigger offensive lines like Washington and Dallas did in the Super Bowls
@@jeremythompson9122 Their misfortune was in all SBs that undersized D was over hugely matched by huge and talented NFC East O-Lines. They would have beat any other NFC Conference team like SF.

@@54GARYBOY That's a fact many have forgotten with time. The entire AFC was like that though. The Browns lost to the same Bills team the following year, 42-0. But our roster was much worse.
Browns had a pretty good decade in the 80's. Playoffs in 80, 82, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89 under 3 different coaches. 80 and 86 were their best teams.
@cacable7 Agreed. The '87 Browns are arguably the best team the Browns have fielded since the mid-60's. It was a more confident and experienced version of the '86 team. It took a while for the '86 team to figure-out they were good enough to be serious contenders. The '87 team knew it from season's start and played like it. The strike and maybe too much confidence hurt their record, but the '87 team in terms of talent and ability is the best Browns team since the Merger. Although it appears the '80, '86. and '87 teams will FINALLY have rivals for that title in the upcoming seasons.
@@mkeogh76 you get it! I'd take the '88 team had they stayed healthy. I will always wonder how the '88 and '89 teams would have done with a healthy roster. The '87 team got blown out by the 49ers though and many I knew were worried.
I still watch both Sipe and Kosar here on You Tube when I need a lift.
If I had to pick, I think the '87 Browns were the best team of the decade
Bernie Kosar looked like he clanked when he ran. And yet, he was one of the top 2-3 QB's of his era, just an amazing player. Disappointing that the Browns couldn't quite get to the SB, but watching him run that offense was a joy and a thing of beauty forever.

I’m 55 years old and I remember this game like it was yesterday. I was 24 years old then and in the Navy stationed in California. I just hope all young Browns fans can watch these old games to get a sense of what it was like to be a Browns fan when they were actually good. The Browns was an elite franchise then.

The last year of the Browns 5 year run. The 2nd year of the Bills 6 year playoff run. 3 thru 6 were to the SB. Both of these teams should of had at least one SB win each during their runs. Love watching these old games

Bernie was awesome. Such confidence and savvy. Injuries - Bernie loved the beat the blitz even if it mean getting hit - prematurely shortened his career. But in his prime years he was as good as any QB in the NFL. And considering the high quality of QB play in that era, that’s really saying something.
This was my first live football game, I moved to Madison Ohio from Buffalo. I was in third grad and still remember this game, very underrated game in NFL history!

Two teams from blue collar Lake Erie cities, who have never one a super bowl, in the cold, in the dog pound, in cleveland municipal stadium, playing an incredible game that went back and fourth all day. If you don't love that, I don't know what to do with you...

This turned out to be the last stand for the mid to late 1980's era Browns, as contract discord, age, and further deterioration of the offensive line led to a complete rebuild after that awful 1990 season.
So true. There’s a book called “Sundays in the Pound” and it talks about all of that stuff you mentioned. The author believes the Decline of the late 80’s Browns began when they traded away Center Mike Baab. He said that effected Kosar tremendously because Baab was superb at calling out blocking assignments and thought exactly like Kosar offensively. So, they would often see the same things and when Kosar would audible Baab always got his other linemen on point. PS- Marty Schottenheimer insisted on trading Baab away because he was infatuated with Greg Rakoczy, an inferior center that the Browns had drafted early in the second round-32nd overall.
@@robkeel100 Wow, I have to check that book out; I'm fond of the Browns anyway (old Browns, Ravens, New Browns, Einhorn is Finkle, Finkle is Einhorn), but I know Kosar also had to plant his foot a certain way to have an effective drop back (I loved the unique way Kosar did things, and so intelligent). Centers are also very smart, and Baab was a good one.
But yeah, Gregg Rakoczy had journeyman ability, and ended his career with those bad early-1990's Patriots. Marty Schottenheimer though Rakoczy was an upgrade over Baab, but not even a little that was.
My whole life a browns fan. Still sends chills up my spine. Really amazing how a sports team can become part of your family. I still watch this game, and I was in eighth grade then.

I was at this game when I was 10. It was frigid and wild. Don Beebe being knocked on his head. The stadium shook that day. I've never been to a game like it in my life. I miss Municipal Stadium.

This is my favorite game from my childhood, I'm from Cleveland so biased, but what a great game, Bills would never lose to another AFC team in the playoffs after this game, 4 straight Super Bowls, amazing

And this was actually the game that prompted the Bills to go no huddle as their base offense. Saw this game up on TH-cam and figured I'd watch it again. As a Bills fan it was a fun run, but this was the catalyst game that pushed them over the top, even with the loss.

@@JSSTyger this was way bigger. The Bills were an elite team in the 80's, and I dunno how they didn't win multiple SB's, so many HOF'ers on that Bills team.
JSSTyger The 94 WC win over NE was big, but that team wasn’t nearly as fun the Kosar Browns. The 1994 season was all about defense (lowest points in NFL) and ball control, but they were excruciatingly frustrating to watch on offense. Belichick really struggled with the O in that era...he was still a work in progress as a HC. In ‘93 BB cut Kosar, and I’ve always wondered what the Browns might have accomplished in ‘93 and ‘94 with Bernie at QB instead of Testeverde.
In ‘89 the Browns O had issues as well (not in this game, though) due to injuries on the OL and Marc Trestman’s oddball playcalling. Bernie was so clutch getting the Browns back on track in December with wins over Houston and Minnesota - setting up this tilt against the Bills.

The '94 team was a tease--like '02--but in reverse (defense vs. offense as the team's strength). That is why they got Andre Rison. BAD choice, but GOOD idea--a 3rd WR to stretch the Steelers out and give us room to run.

Living in Buffalo. I was there Sat near the dog pound. Drank shots all game with my boss who was from Cleveland. I wore a pair of Bills boxer shorts on my head under my Bills cap. They burned it at the end of the game. Went somewhere on the flats got totally wasted seperated from my friend. found the car some how and slept on the hood till he came to the car. No idea how I found the car. I remember buying a taco or something from a street vender and I dropped it I'm looking down at it and it looked like some type of a tie dye decoration, made it home to Buffalo alive. what an experience. Decided after that , no more tacos lol
This is the game that won me over as a Bills fan. Coming up on my 33rd year w the team. Hopefully this is the one we win a Super Bowl! Let's go Buffalo!!

Man, this is a NFL aficianado's dream right here. 2 of the best teams and QBs of the 80s. Game down to the final wire, and one of the greatest defensive players of all-time in Clay Matthews making the final stand on the crunch time play. What a show!

I loved winter games in the old cleveland stadium. Everyone would be covered in dirt and mud by halftime. They've taken mud out of the modern game, and that's one thing I hate about it.

Swear one of the reasons I started liking the Browns was the atmosphere at Muni. It was insane.
The only playoff win i can remember is the 94 season over the pats.
That full minute and twenty-four seconds of silence from the announcers, while the crew finds and delivers a twenty-one shot montage of victory and defeat is absolute television magic. The announcers even let the winning snap happen in silence. Such restraint, such respect for the spectacle. They don't do broadcasts (or play games) like that anymore.

Thanks for this classic. Watched entire game here again and still got the chills and disappointment (Bills fan). Look how simple on the graphics- Listen to the crowd noise WITHOUT electronic music and screens encouragement! Great game in great stadium -weather and fans- OLD SCHOOL tough football. That old place really could rock and Browns have NO home field crowd advantage after leaving it. We got the best of Charlie Jones and his old AFL voice with Merlin Olsen- guys who called the game and let you enjoy it! But damn Harmon !
Forgotten classic. The Harmon dropped TD felt like the Mandela Effect in my head for a while...like I imagined it. but there it is, at 2:49:44 all over again.

This was such an under rated playoff game, and some how got lost in time. I guess bc neither team made the super bowl, but it's a shame, bc it's a classic. There are other great games people forget about, like the Jets and browns in 86. I love reliving these games from the 80's. Some truly compelling games that today's youth doesn't even know happened.
It was underrated because of the teams and cities in the game. The major networks hated both cities with their dreary weather and small local fan bases. If this were Pittsburgh-Oakland? Instant classic would have been bestowed upon this game.
I know people all over Buffalo, and fans of the Bills were pissed when Ronnie Harmon dropped the potential game winning TD pass in the end zone & I get why they felt the way they did towards him. But me, being a Chargers fan, I was glad to see him in San Diego for the next 5 or 6 years of his career. All I can say is dude was money in a Bolts uniform when the Chargers needed big plays in crucial moments of a game. The team improved every year he was there, and they eventually went to the super bowl in 1994, following Buffalo’s 4 year run. And Harmon was a big factor in San Diego’s success, and helping them get to their only super bowl. Sorry all you bills fans felt that way about him but a lot of people in San Diego, including myself loved watching him play in lightning bolts ⚡️
Amazing, the video quality of this nearly 30-year old recording to tape is better than what I get from my Direct TV 90% of the time. If it's raining, 100% of the time.
Also, the TD at 43:46 is the Browns' Up + B pass from Tecmo Super Bowl. QB Browns to Webster Slaughter, works anywhere on the field 90% of the time.

Eric Metcalf was my favorite player as a student at Texas. Many people didnt know about him but the Browns drafted him in the 1st round. He was also the NCAA champion in the Long Jump one year and ran track all 4 years. His agreement to be a Longhorn was that he would not play Spring football so he could improve his speed in Track. He was from Virginia.
Before Fox, NBC Sports was the most maverick and innovative brand in television. The introduction of recognizing 3rd down passing "lineups" and "nickle packages" on defense. That was totally different.
It's fascinating to see back then how far away the crowd is between the 20's. And the inconvenience of playing on packed sand is better than playing on glorified concrete with no resistance.

46 yards, on the painted dirt of Municipal Stadium, and into the east end (Dawg Pound). Has always been one of the toughest kicks to make in the NFL, and Bahr did it while hurt. He was the perfect kicker for the Browns of that era.
In 1990 Bahr went to the Giants, and made a pretty clutch kick for them too to beat the 2-time defending champion 49ers in muddy Candlestick, and send the NY Giants to the Super Bowl.
