I feel like a good way to avoid the confusion would be to have the fake Knuckles use the Sonic 3 & K cutscene palette - where he was pinker and had yellow socks.
Imagine if there was a level select and sonic and tails enter aiz and metal sonic is like “nah” and runs away so you go back into the teleporter in the start of the zone where knuckles was and you’ll be teleported to sonic & tails’ story 💀

Fang is like Knuckles’ rival for this game, while Metal Sonic is the bigger threat (as Knuckles, as Metal copied his appearance and his abilities).
This is a lot better than "Eggman tricked Knuckles again" stuff
