it is a misconception that 1st Airborne did not expect tanks. That's why they took so much PIAT's (almost 400) and even the 17 pounder antitank guns with them. However they thought the Germans could not put up a cohesive defense. It was just very poorly executed logistically and a mystery that so many of the leading officers were unexperienced as airborne commanders.
My father fought there. His last minutes on earth.- at 83 - he fought again - our family were totally shocked at what we saw in that hospital. He never spoke about it - just a silk handkerchief from the Dutch gvt. On that day he fought against his Oxygen mask - screaming but his breath was so weak. His last seconds on earth he was back there and it was horrifying.
the road To arnhem goes over a bridge at Nijmegen and thats the failure of the plan .. But first Groep De Kruif BS/ Knokploeg has put info to the Alies The second panzer korps are hier , ingoerd by Monty and De guingand ( leadership faul by far ) Than Nijmgen , Nijmegen is till to day a Diffiult city to drive thru or to pass , few acces roads to enter and few too pass ..No 3 routs from the south and with the oversteek 3 to exit .. So How too take a bridge ..Now Jumpin Jim Gavin deed wat he must doe , High ground first .., Than the city and at last the other side of the bridge .. And Jumping Jim was ans is till too day right .., thats too take the bridge in Nijmegen , the botte neck on the road too Arnhem .. Monty /De Guingand missed the train too Wesel ( Reichwald ) and the importance off that .. The Road its self from Nijmegen till Arnhem too dat , as flat as a pancake ..1 Gun and yu can stop all ..
Montgomery did not ignore the Dutch resistance reports on SS panzer troops north and east of Arnhem in the Veluwe and Achterhoek regions - it was the reason he cancelled operation COMET, realising it was not strong enough to deal with them, and ordered an upgrade to replace it that became operation MARKET. You are correct that the operation failed at Nijmegen - the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment was instructed to send its 1st Battalion directly to the bridge after landing, but the regimental commander failed to follow this instruction, believing he had to clear the drop zone and secure his other objectives first.
What a powerful message from Willemien Rieken wow Gave me chills
