Hi, you mentioned about using "Program" mode as automatic. So what's the difference between the "Program" mode and "Auto" mode setting? Sounds like they do the same things? You are a great teacher.....by the way.
I could listen to you explain stuff all my life and never get bored. This has informed in so many ways I am definitely sleeping less dumb tonight. Thank you for the wonderful video!
I have been into photography for 25 years and consider myself a semi-protog. For the life of me I could not explain to my son on how light works. I then remembered watching some of your videos in the past and I must say you are the most technical photographer on-line. This video was perfect for my son. Thank You so much for what you have done for my son along with other future photographers.
Hands down the best tutorial I have come across. I bought a new camera and macro lens and was struggling since weeks trying to figure out what those settings mean. I used to have a point and shoot camera on which I never had to adjust anything and was at the brink of selling my new camera and lens again..Thank you SO MUCH.
Gloria S. Same I just got a A7ii my second cam my first was a lumix zs100 point and shoot so easy to use but never mess with the settings until now if I would of done that since I bought my camera it would of been easy to use my new one but everything is adding up now with this video
Agreed! It's like the Khan Academy of Photography. I know all of this, I go back to dark room days, but I need Tony to help me teach it to my Middle School photojournalism class. :)
I don't know where to begin. Your knowledge is a good example of genius. The genius to me anyways are the selfless distribution of your skills to the exploring minds here. We are all your students in some form or fashion. This is truly a blessing. Thanks for the text, I will add it to my content of photography books. Thanks
Great explanation. If one doesn't understand the 4 principles of LISA (Light-ISO-Shutter-Aperture), they'll be floating in a sea of intellectual uncertainty....I had always heard these terms but never knew how they interacted with each other. Having a basic knowledge has helped me tremendously...Thanks again Tony.
Have been a photographer nearly all my life, as an amateur and professional. This video is one of the best that I have seen, it explains every thing in good detail without being over complicated, both for the beginner, amateur and certainly a refresher for the professional!. Overall excellent!!. Thank you!.
Wow this is fantastic. I was trying to do something as simple as a timelapse on my G7 , and noticed how nuanced shutter speed, aperture and ISO were and you answered all of my questions. You made it extremely approachable. 10/10
very humbled by your tutorial man, this is quite commendable.... if you come in our country Kenya i'll buy a plate of ugali nyama choma for you, heheheheheh!!!!!
I'm an experienced photographer and didn't learn anything here but I still watched it in it's entirety and I can say it's perfect if you are a novice. That's why I bought the book for my Wife!
I came to your channel for the 107 training, but stayed for the photography. Excellent teacher. I remember back when you chose your ISO when you bought your film.
I am new to DSLR and I appreciate the visuals and speed of presentation. I'll be watching a few more times for sure. Thank you. It's like "ahaaa" and then moments later, "now what number did he say?" It's very reassuring that I can pause and go back. Goal 1: learn more about how manual settings on my camera work. Goal 2: improve my photos. Goal 3: Add to #1 and #2. I am also going on my 4th mission trip to the central Visayas region of the Philippines. For me to capture not only the beauty of the area but also the beauty of the people in their daily life is something I aspire to do more effectively. I am excited about my new camera and know that I will probably revert more to the program mode, but I do want to branch into more manual settings when capturing specific moments is not quite so critical.
I never comment on videos I see on youtube, but I have gone through several videos trying to understand the topics you have addressed here, and you really made look easy, awesome creativity for visual learners, terrific job!!
This is one of the most helpful and best explained tutorials I have ever watched, the way that you can use such relate able analogies makes it so easy to understand. Thank you so much Tony.
Hi! I know this is an old video, but the clarity of the combination of spoken words plus the practical use of the camera in different ambient modes and settings, made this video one of the BEST tutorials I have come across regarding explanation of the ISO-f/tops-Shutter speed relationship. Simply, an awesome and easy to understand video tutorial! Thank you so much for this one :)
Hey, I just wanted to say how much of a help this video was moving me toward using Manual mode on my DSLR. That revolution has really spurred my growth as a photographer, and I decided to make a youtube channel to teach people about various photography concepts. However, my videos will never be as comprehensive and in-depth as yours.
Tony Northrup I'm glad I found you! Just ordered my first semi pro camera the Nikon D3300 , no previous photography experience, thankfully you were the first person who popped up when I started searching for tutorials on youtube! Can't wait to start!! Also got your book on my kindle. A lot of info and I will take it in little by little
Recently retired and taking up photography for a hobby. Very much a beginner. Your video provided a very nice understanding of the “mystery “ per-say to settings cause and effect. I will need to watch a few more times for all to sink in. Thank you.
Good God! Finally, somebody who explains the use of manual camera properly! I’ve learned more in this simple video than in the couple of books I’ve bought over the years on the subject of Photography. Thank you so much for this Tony- I’ll certainly be on the lookout for more of your video tutorials and your books. Cheers from Montreal, Canada!
the way he delivers the information and presents himself are very professional. I can listen and watch him all day without being annoyed, unlike that guy froknowsphoto.
More informative than any lesson my lecturer gave me in University. I payed a lot of money to receive poor teaching. This guy does it vastly better and...for free.
The simple 30 second tweak you can make to your camera to let you take excellent photos every time… I'll show you in plain English exactly how to do it, and it really does take no more than 30 seconds. Here TrickPhotographyEasy.blogspot.com
Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), the founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISO is derived from the Greek isos, meaning equal. Whatever the country, whatever the language, it's always ISO.
"the founders decided to give it the short form ISO" What founders? This was a choice by camera manufactures and the photographers they work with. The ISO itself doesn't care what term people use to describe light sensitivity. However, if you want to talk about it using a standard, then ISO 12232:2006 is a good one to use, and camera manufacturers decided to just call it "ISO" instead of "The arithmetic light sensitivity rating defined by ISO 12232:2006".
Hah! I knew I've heard your name before! I am in IT too, and I've read several of your Microsoft tutorial books before! Wow! You're amazing, Tony. Not just a computer expert but a master photographer too! Really impressed with your skills and hobbies!
Wow, I just came here for a basic explanation of these settings to get a better understanding of camera specs for a possible purchase, and I got a whole lot more. What a great video, and it doesn't just explain these settings, but demonstrates their affects.
Tony is a talented and knowledgable photographer. What a pleasure to have someone of his talent and expertise share their tips with those of us just starting out!
I agree with you. +Tony Northrup I appreciate the way that you showed us the 4 settings going up and down, and the way that you used "stop" in various sentences [which helped to explain what a stop was], and the way that you explained the benefits and trade offs of various extreme settings.
I once criticized both of you in a previous comment on another video. I take that back and want to say that you really have a lot of knowledge and care about future photographers.
Hi Tony & Chelsea... Really enjoy learning from your videos, your style is so relaxed and technically factual and explained really well, so I have just bought your book, am looking forward to getting to grips with the 80D I managed to snag on eBay for a steal with a 18-135-USM lens as my first lens. Amazing how much you can save with a little patience and the correctly setup alerts :-) Thanks again and although this video is now 5yrs old, its still bang on the money.
This was the very first Tony Northrup video I ever watched, and I've been a fan ever since. For some reason the "algo" decided to recommend it to me many years later.
The first 2-3 minutes of your video were more informative than 99% of the videos I've researched on TH-cam! Thank you for this video! And by the way, I OWN your book! Awesome.
Toni, I have watch many tutorial videos on youtube. But I best understand the way you teach. I used to be an ok amature photographer years back with 35mm film. When digital came in, my expensive equipment became obsolete. I set that hobby aside for many years now. Last week I picked up a slightly used nikon D5200 and lenses. I feel like a total novice again learning these cameras. They are different from my 35mm. Thanks. I think my learning curve will be quick since I dont have to write every setting down and wait for film to be developed. I'm looking forward to learning from you.
This video is the very first one I watched, and started my photography journey. It's still the best tutorial to get out of auto mode. Thank you Tony and Chelsea.
Thanks a lot for this video. I've just bought a 1930s Rollieflex after years of automatic camera phone pictures and was utterly lost by all the dials! The ISO is obviously set by the film in the camera, but now I get how to compensate with the aperture and shutter speed. Amazing. Thanks again.
Thank you so much Tony! I'm thinking of getting a Nikon D3400. I would love to take landscape shots and take close up sharp pictures with high aperture. I dont know what i said even makes sense but what lens would you recommend? Thank you for the video, its really helpful, especially for noobs like me
Although I'm still confused, mainly because I'm slow if not hands on, I will continue to practice and watch this over and over until I grasp a full understanding. Thank you for your time preparing this video.
i don't like auto mode..i love photography and i started shooting on Manual..it was difficult at first...i thought i spent 550 euros and i don't know shit..with a little bit patience i started shooting photos i desire...BE PATIENT PEOPLE TO SEE SUCCESS :)
Thanks for the wise words! I bought a beginner's little $200 Fujifilm S8200 a few weeks ago, and I'm too inexperienced to start shooting in manual.. I only use manual when taking night time shots or when I want to experiment with different shutter speeds and stuff. I watch videos like this so that I can start to understand photography even more.. I know the basics, but I want to know EVERYTHING! Haha
It's in at least one other video, and he again calls it "Dad". I think it's literally a bobblehead of his Dad. Not sure if custom or his Dad is famous and they're just available on the market.
Thank you so very much! I used to photograph a lot with SLR (Minolta & Nikon N2000). Switching to DSLR (Nikon D300) after 15 years of not taking a shot (besides smartphones god-forbid) its a whole new world. Again, thank you so very much.
Another nice video! ISO is actually, AFAIK, International Organization for Standardization and ASA is American Standards Association. ASA and ISO in cameras are technical specifications done on these two organizations when film got standardized. It's similar to WiFi b, g and n - they are actually IEEE 802.11a, b, g and n. IEEE is the International Electronics and Electric Engineering. It is an acronym but for Photography it means what you said. Very good class, Mr. Northrup. When I was a child, I started to see birds on the wall of my room ... and I discovered they were coming from a window at the kitchen and the light went through a keyhole and the image was formed in the dark room. This lead me to try and learn more about these things. You are doing something similar here - hands on teaching!
Yes, it is noisy. But pay attention to the video. He tells you that the higher ISO the noisier the picture. That is relevant in video too. Notice how the video gets grainier when he dims the light?
+Luke Petersen Thank you so much. You explained it so lovely. jAdamarie I am confused with all this stuff also and I'm well lets just say olderrrrr than you. I'm going to be taking pictures of my new grandbaby, in other words it is always a great time to learn something new. Good luck jAdamarie and thank you Luke for helping us along the journey.
+Luke Petersen In your comment, i think you should decrease the ISO when you decrease the aperture (open) because open aperture means more lights so you need less sensitive captures or you will get a little extra bright picture.
rookie at photography here. your channel makes it very easy to understand (the theory at least). the goal is to go out every weekend and put that theory to work.
I will say I am very pleased watching this learning about cameras, my job requires me knowing cameras and being able to sell them and I have gone frokm not knowing cameras that well or the knowledge of them to being able to know just a little more. thanks so much it genuinely helps, not just for work but as a amateur photographer as well.
Just beginning photography. I received a Nikon D200 with an incredible lens, and I REALLY need all of the help I can get to begin taking any pictures that actually turn out decent. This video was great, I really appreciate it, thanks for posting it!
This is very well explained. After watching dozens of videos on photography for beginners, this one made the most sense. The examples are brilliant for visual learners like me!
Thank you. I was a professional photographer back in the day of film and just picked up a digital and was confused about there being no Fstop on the lense. You really helped me so thanks again.
Great video... I take photos for a living almost by accident and just had to start figuring some things out by myself. It wasn't something I was even interested in until the last year or so and now I'm starting to take a little pride in it and actually want present my work the best I can as a photographer with absolutely no training. Thank you for posting!
Thank you so much! I've been totally lost on all these subjects before now, all I knew was that I wanted to learn how to be a better videographer. But your video is so helpful!
WOW! I need to make all my wannabe photographer friends watch This! This is by far the best video explaining camera settings and how to use them. I believe I'll be purchasing your book, and/or watching more of your videos.
Just bought my first camera, a Nikon d 3300 and your videos give me great insight. Wonderful detail and explanations. I'll be sure to try all your tutorials. Thanks!
This Tutorial really was immensely helpful in very fundamental understanding of Basic Photography. As well it was far more helpful as well because you properly took the time to not only explain, but “show” via demonstration of the various photos from the setup what happens when you change settings, lighting etc that in my mind it makes sense. Now these things make so much more sense in settings. One the best Tutorials I’ve seen here.
I just purchased my first camera and I was so confused! LOL..Kind of afraid of it! I love photography and have been told that I take amazing pics with my cell, that I have a good eye! I just want to thank you so very much for your video. It is starting to make sense to me. You has given me the confidence to forward! I no longer feel lost. GREAT VIDEO!:-)
This is the best camera setting explanation video I have ever seen. I have a handle for composition taking a good photo. Using a camera and all the settings is where I need help. Thank you!

True
This is one of the best videos I've seen that explains the camera features. Thank you.
totally agree!
I would also agree with this. This was very very good at solidifying things for me.
I agree
Absolutely, explained so simply
I have been into photography for 25 years and consider myself a semi-protog. For the life of me I could not explain to my son on how light works. Hands down the best tutorial for this topic.
+izzy H Hands up the best.
Look up Michael brown.... Tony is great but mike was born to teach
+toyarj37 I followed your suggestion. You are right on. Thanks for sharing another resource.
+D Jones oh good I'm glad you liked him. That guy took me from a point and shoot to a dslr being fully functional in a week.
100%
Hands down the best tutorial I have come across. I bought a new camera and macro lens and was struggling since weeks trying to figure out what those settings mean. I used to have a point and shoot camera on which I never had to adjust anything and was at the brink of selling my new camera and lens again..Thank you SO MUCH.
I agree. I now can use my camera and not cuss at it for being smarter than me. Ha-ha!
I agree!!!

i second that so detailed
This was the best instruction video I've ever seen on TH-cam. Absolutely fantastic, added to favourites and subscribed.
SimonOxfPhys Thanks!
Simon Clark 😊
wow damn this was a surprise.
Thanks
Jujag Themag Aww, thanks, Jujag!
Tony & Chelsea Northrup totally agree!!!
Tony & Chelsea Northrup ps: thank you 😊
Great explanation.
Rob Melone My pleasure, Rob! And I've never heard LISA before, but I love it!
Aperture is how big your hole is.
ISO is how sensitive your hole is.
Shutter speed is how long your hole remains open.
Logan Darklock hmm
Logan Darklock lol
Logan Darklock this is by far the best laymen term I've ever read XD
That's hot.
LOL! BEST EXPLANATION EVER!!! Straight to the point :)
Have been a photographer nearly all my life, as an amateur and professional. This video is one of the best that I have seen, it explains every thing in good detail without being over complicated, both for the beginner, amateur and certainly a refresher for the professional!. Overall excellent!!. Thank you!.
Best didactics I've ever seen in photography tutorials EVER!
Congratulations!

Thank you!
I’ve learned more from Tony & Chelsea than anyone else! This video makes what many new photographers struggle with so easy!

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THIS GUYS AWESOME HAIR
Well, that explains why I've been chasing my tail for so long. Very informative video, thanks!
Cheers Tony! Made sense of my camera's settings in an easy to understand manner - brilliant!
Tony is a talented and knowledgable photographer. What a pleasure to have someone of his talent and expertise share their tips with those of us just starting out!
Is 2024, and I'm watching all of your videos, and learning so much. I'm so grateful, thank you so much for sharing this knowledge!!🙏🙏🙏
very well structured and very well presented. If this is a video to gauge the rest of your training by, where do I sign up.

I take that back and want to say that you really have a lot of knowledge and care about future photographers.
Fantastic. The best self- explanatory topic on Aperture, Shutter, ISO and Light. The setup was clever.
I enjoyed this video so much I purchased the book :)

good god, i am so fucking thankful for this video but i know im ganna have to watch it like 50 fuckin times.
You look like Robin Van Persie.
Ha ha, he does too, great call!
Or, perhaps more accurately, Robin Van Persie looks like Tony Northrup. I think Tony probably popped out first...
Couldnt agree more :))
EXACTLY HAHA
Nah!
hmmm, lookin' more like if Billy Bob Thornton had a son
What Dr. Carl Sagan was to astronomy, Tony is to photography.
DML Channel That's saying something.
DML Channel ha quality post
+DML Channel Not just photography, you should see his other passions specifically computer-related. He's a geek, in a good way! I'm impressed!
This has to be one of the most outstanding videos in explaining and demonstrating the correlations between all of the settings. Thanks so much.

Did you mean blades of the fan?
"ISO stands for International Standards Organization, and it is a standardized industry scale for measuring sensitivity to light."
This is really eye opening. I finally got to understand all these after about 2 days of search. Thank you so much. Much love from Ghana 🇬🇭
Although I'm still confused, mainly because I'm slow if not hands on, I will continue to practice and watch this over and over until I grasp a full understanding. Thank you for your time preparing this video.
2019?
i don't like auto mode..i love photography and i started shooting on Manual..it was difficult at first...i thought i spent 550 euros and i don't know shit..with a little bit patience i started shooting photos i desire...BE PATIENT PEOPLE TO SEE SUCCESS :)
Haha
I found it creepy when ever he called the figure his dad lol
Me too lol..is there an explanation?
@@ElsewhereGuitar , i'm assuming that the figure might be custom made to look like his dad?
It's in at least one other video, and he again calls it "Dad". I think it's literally a bobblehead of his Dad. Not sure if custom or his Dad is famous and they're just available on the market.
Yeah for a moment I thought the same, now I think it's probably just a comical/ inside thing. Or it happens to look similar to his dad
His handler
Thank you so very much! I used to photograph a lot with SLR (Minolta & Nikon N2000). Switching to DSLR (Nikon D300) after 15 years of not taking a shot (besides smartphones god-forbid) its a whole new world.
Again, thank you so very much.
I could watch this video in multiple times, and never get bored of it. Thank you for explaining these type of elements.
You're welcome!
So this whole time I thought iso stood for international standard organization.
😁😁
hi I'm troy mclure
8:25 that fish is in pain
Well he is out of water, so my guess is he was already dead by the time the photo was taken ;P
That fish is like "Fuck, this would be so awesome if only this jackass hadn't impaled me with his claws before taking me on this awesome ride"
i figured this out all by my own, but having someone to explain how it work in details is always a good thing.
You are doing something similar here - hands on teaching!
your video looks a little bit noisy.. Oh wait, its just me and my bad internet loading at 480
im in 1080 and it still looks noisy
Yes, it is noisy. But pay attention to the video. He tells you that the higher ISO the noisier the picture. That is relevant in video too. Notice how the video gets grainier when he dims the light?
maybe it's just your monitor screen.
ye the video is noisy af
I'm confused lol I'm new to all this so yeah no experience just a 15 year old
Luke Petersen omg thank you i now het it haha and yeah i got my canon rebel camera a month ago
+Luke Petersen why you gave to increase your ISO when you decrease your aparture? how if the background is light?
+skeptic proof exactly
still too confusing for a beginner :s
happyflowers1212 Well, this video is just designed to supplement Chapter 4 of Stunning Digital Photography. I hope it helps, but it's just one piece.
rookie at photography here. your channel makes it very easy to understand (the theory at least). the goal is to go out every weekend and put that theory to work.
I will say I am very pleased watching this learning about cameras, my job requires me knowing cameras and being able to sell them and I have gone frokm not knowing cameras that well or the knowledge of them to being able to know just a little more. thanks so much it genuinely helps, not just for work but as a amateur photographer as well.
he looks like tbag from prison break
totally not, btw Jesus is God
God is God, Jesus is the son of God in the big fairy tale.
Superformance72 this is a fairy land.
Is this the site for religious discussion? I think not.
Hot Damn, it's hot in here......Is it me or this guy is Rojo Caliente......HOT !!!!!!
Just beginning photography. I received a Nikon D200 with an incredible lens, and I REALLY need all of the help I can get to begin taking any pictures that actually turn out decent. This video was great, I really appreciate it, thanks for posting it!
Oh my gosh I can't even express to you how amazingly you explained this concept. Thank you so much!!!!

Heel erg leerzaam.Ik heb in een half uur meer geleerd dan in een hele week.Thank You TonyNorhtrup
This is the best camera setting explanation video I have ever seen. I have a handle for composition taking a good photo. Using a camera and all the settings is where I need help. Thank you!
Holy crap! This has got to the be the best video on photography I have ever seen. Damn.
