Here you go guys, I am a fan of Tomb Raider and I want to enjoy the game without shuttering. Picking up after its patched up. Until then, it's in my to daily news reading list.

Now its amazing optimazation, i get a straight 95 fps on a 17 and 1070 on ultra, it works great now and is absolutely a buy.
What have they done to her face? She looks nothing like Lara from the 2013 version!

I changed settings from very high to high for all the settings I could and still frames dropping

i have it pre purchased, i wonder if theres a way to lock the fps at 30? steady 30fps is way better than fluctuating between 60 and 40 tbh
Sooooooooo I enjoyed this review, but my question is: Will you being doing a walk the walk for Mass Effect 2? The ME1 Walk the walk was excellent.
I got a code for this game with my 970 and I'm still probably going to wait for a patch or two. It just doesn't look like a big enough step up from the first tomb raider where my previous gpu could max that one out but my new gpu won't max this one?
Just completed this on my GTX970. I started when it came out on Thursday and finished just now. Aim to get 100% and then will replay it again. I loved it was worth the buy and glad I held off buying an Xbox One. I did have frame rate issues but as you said hopefully it will be pachable but the graphics are stunning

Goes above 60 but drops to 43 fairly often instead of 35(prior driver)
Installed on 2 different SSD's to make sure it wasn't that.
Second computer got about 3 FPS but its a slower GPU.

+SirJamesDTech Get yourself a 4 GB VRAM card and an i3, scale down the settings to Xbox One level, enjoy console like visuals and performance without a huge amount of money wasted on hardware.
Obviously the requirements will skyrocket if you want better than console visuals AND performance. Sheesh.

AngryCentaurGaming That raw gameplay footage...hideous. And Nixxes did an incredible job with the first title, outside of that TressFX nonsense.
Edit: I said Crystal Dynamics originally, when it is actually Nixxes responsible for the port...which makes the state of it even worse. Usually they are absolutely brilliant. This leads me to wonder if drivers will end up being the culprit.
i have a 970 and an i5 6500 and the game runs on highest settings on 50-60 fps was there a patch for the framerate?

I am managing well midway through the campaign on an R7 370 with Mostly high settings on 1080p. DX12 pumps up about 5 frames from DX11.
I'd say, its getting a nice support from the last 7 patches i've seen.
Great review. I enjoyed the game very much on my X1. Fantastic experience. Glad more gamers get to play it now! Sucks it's another shady port though. Seems to happen a lot with AAA console ports to PC lately.

no idea what frame rate I get since I have locked it to 60. but everything maxed out +ssma I have never dropped below 60fps. using 4670k and gtx1080. pretty sure this is the case for gtx1070 also

+AngryCentaurGaming Nope, you mentioned view distance and some other settings, I assumed you tested TressFX since you are so thorough, but just double checking since that is a hard hitting setting. Just not optimized well unfortunately.
I am enjoying Tomb Raider but it feels very claustrophobic and the zones are very linear, not enjoying that part at all. So is the Rise of the Tomb Raider truly open world or still small linear zones like the last game?
+Monster_Zero It's supposed to be semi-open world. I guess it will be a bit like Witcher 2 in that sense.
Thanks for the honest and accurate review. I can't trust the main review sites anymore, so I truly appreciate reviews like this. I'm going to wait for the sale on Steam, and hope the frame rate issues are fixed by then.

i've heard that the framerate is unstable because of the DRM used in this game, it's a really heavy DRM that was put to prevent pirating, i guess it's called Denuvo, and every game that used it had some really bad framerate problems
Any news when this game is gonna come out on PS4?
I picked it up for 30$ today on the steam sale. I loved the 2013 game, it was such a surprise and ran well. Have they optimized it yet? Still running a 780 Classy. Arkham was also a terrible launch, though for some odd reason it ran well on my system. I ended up getting it shortly after launch for 24$ off ebay and i might have had 2 crashes. Of course there were spots where water looked like polygons, textures were unfinished completely, and frame rate drops here and there. For the most part i was lucky though.
I was pretty damn skeptical of this port and turns out my fears were true. This was originally slated for Spring 2016, and we ended up getting it at the end of January (hardly spring by anyone's definition). Considering the felt the 2013 game was a failure despite selling 6 million, I doubt they were happy with how the Xbox releases performed if NPD is anything to go by. Anyways, it simply felt like the game was getting pushed out the door as quickly as possible and we never really got any really useful info prior to release (like actual gameplay footage, etc.) Hopefully it'll be great after launch drivers and maybe a few patches hit, but I'd have though Arkham Knight would have sent a message to other publishers how not to handle a PC port.

+H3MPY ya so far added another 7 after it came out. Worse performance as many are reporting so I went back,. Seems like for some it helped for others it didn't. But square was nice enough to update the game prior to release with some optomizations. So hopefully that works. They just added SMAA

I think they've helped with the frame rate. I get locked 60 on ultra high, with my gpu load at about 60-80%

Thanks for a great review! I was going back & forth whether to get this on PC or XBox One. I got it for the console just when it was released on PC lol. And my PC is a beast but I wanted to play with my daughter as she & I liked watching gameplay videos of this Tomb Raider. This is my first go around with any Tomb Raider game & we both like it thus far. Now, after hearing this review, I really like it on the XBox One; the graphics are amazing on that tbh. But, then again I am an older gamer who enjoys any game on any platform as long it's my cup of tea. Oh I see you are into Dying Light yesssss!!! Now to go watch that video.

yes dude, you will get 60fps as well. This review is from before the game was patched. The game runs very well now.
Shrug. I played it about a month ago with a 960 gtx and it slogs down crazy in Geothermal Valley and some other minor locations, and after extended playing it feels like there's a memory leak present. But what really put me off was the horrible lighting in Siberia and color bleed everywhere.
SolidBoss7 I have a 1060 as well and while it runs 60+ fps most if the time, it still drops to 30 fps occasionally, especially in large snowy areas like the soviet installation hub area. I have mostly everything on ultra except aa and ambient occlusion and i guess i could turn off hairworks to improve performance but lara's charcter looks so odd without it.
Hi, I'm running this game maxed out on 980ti SLI and getting around 80-90fps. Using a G-sync monitor at 144hz at 1440p this game looks incredible on an Asus monitor. I would say that the developers have looked two years into the future with an eye on Pascal thinking that GPUs will soon be at a much higher power band. They built in longevity at a price, anything less than a 980ti will suffer I'm afraid, which is hard to take but you gotta pay to play. To be fair to them they do recommend a 980ti but that doesn't help the 1000s of gamers with less than 980ti.
I get a pretty steady frames with everything maxed out besides textures. Very High Textures made me get some major lag spikes but when I turned it down to high I got about 35-40 frames on my 770 4gb version.
Great review. I just built a new gaming rig with decent specs and thought I was going crazy. I was having sputtering framerates until I dialed back the AA. I'm still holding out for a patch because when it works it works well.

Yeah, I will probably wait on this one. I purchased it on Xbox and loved it, but I see no reason to purchase it full price again if there's a chance I won't even be able to run it as well as I want. I'd much rather wait for a sale and future patches.
This game runs and looks phenomenal on my new LG 4K tv powered by my 980tis. Only a mission in and I love it.

Very fun review. I like your style. I just finished the game and i hadn't realized the amount of destruction i brought onto everything i've encountered. I also always wondered where the heck Lara is putting all that gold and artifacts that she happily steals left and right. A chest system would hinder linear gameplay, i know, but there should be "something". You were spot on with the gun sounds. I didn't like them in the first TR and i was hoping for an upgrade, but nooooo. Still popcorn MG. But on the flipside, all you really need is a maxed out Bow with "arrow retrieval" and "auto loot" to become a killing machine that would make John Rambo jealous. :)

Dude is hilarious, fantastic review. W/ that said, I just started playing this (*March 2017) i7 6700 / GTX 1080ti, and I'm able to achieve 100FPS on 3440x1440 resolution, high settings, which I'm sure ACG would appreciate. So as he mentions in the subtitle, they must have patched, and optimized this well since he reviewed it. Regardless, looking to this guy first for reviews from now on.

Nothing can beat the Fox engine in fps optimisation. It's a shame they'll scrap it
Just set the textures to "high" instead of "very high" (There's hardly any difference anyways), that gets rid of any stuttering. From there on out if you're not satisfied, turn off "tesselation", and lower the "level of detail" setting. (This is on higher end cards)
+slaQ83 actually you can now run it pretty much with very high as they fixed a good deal of the unoptomized bits
The Game is very well optimized now. I have an old i5 2500k running @ 4.4GHz and an overclocked 970. I get a stable 60 fps vsync 99.9% of the time. to get that rock solid performance i reduced sun shadows from Very High to High but everything else is maxed

I'm really enjoying this game! I had to tune my PC to a lot, my AMD phenom ii x6 1090t and MSI 7950 960mhz is working hard. It goes from 30 to 60 indeed so much, but i cant lock it on 30.

Might the performance have been hindered by no driver support? This video was uploaded the same day as the driver support was released so the drivers might give it a bit of a boost.

damn. I might hold off on this one for a sale if its gonna preform like that. I'm running a GTX 970 and I was expecting 60fps as a minimum :/
+Jayden Young with the 2 patches for optimization its better but you wont be getting 60fps with a 970 on the highest settings(I am assuming 1920 x 1080 as you didn't say what res). Your going to have to set it down some and for later in the game your going to have to drop some more.
+AngryCentaurGaming what operating system do you use? (I use 7) I ended up picking it up cheap from greenmangaming and it runs great on my 970. I'm running a bit over the high preset and it rarely drops below 60. The lowest fps in gameplay was about 50fps. I speculate that Windows 10 might be causing issues.

Performance is really good now with good hardware...the GTX 10 series really made this very playable.
Damn it... I knew it. Maybe my PC is too old to run this, but I'll still hang on for Crystal Dynamics to patch it before I buy it. Either way I just got to Gran Soren on Dragon's Dogma and I'm loving every minute of it, so I don't mind waiting for those patches.
Isn't there any INI files or something you can maybe tweak a bit?

Just bought it on Steam =D. Going to play it after a few more vids. I've been waiting for this game since I played TR 2013, and especially after seeing the first gameplay trailer.
If GTX 980 got lower then 50fps on very high 1080p idk how it will perform on GTX 970..

Ive seen a lot of conflicting performance reports on the steam forums. Of course those are steam user reviews so I take then with a few grains of salt. Seen a few people with 660's saying that the game ran ok for them. But there are also people with 980's, etc. stating that they have some issues with it.
I have a GTX 750 ti with 2GB of Vram and an built in OC of 156Mhz. and have been able to run the Witcher 3 on high settings at about 45-50 fps. Thanks for your review. If I run into any issues I at least will know where to start adjusting my options. I don't mind scaling back draw distance or turning off HBAO+. All else fails I can get a steam refund or wait till I upgrade my video card again.

I have been playing this game for 8 hours now and I have not experienced any of the frame rate drops you talk about. using gtx980 not even running it from an ssd. Haven't tried it before the patches but now for me at least it is running perfectly. Anyway great review as always!

all you have to do to get the framerate stable on the 980, it turn the texture quality down to high, leave everything else at max, as the 980 does not have enough vram for very high textures
Cant complain, but got it pretty late. So i could enjoy it with a gtx 1080ti @1440p 70-110fps, maxed completely out (set very high and bumbed all other sliders that i could to the right, not aa doh kept it at smaa) And i must say i realy have a blast playing this game, love it :) But you are right, it loves vram, uses about 7gb vram on my end.
Funny that it has performance issues. Wasn't the last one the poster child of pc performance and runs multi gpu like a champ? wtf were thry thinking...
