Kenya's Biggest Marathon

  • We were lucky enough to be invited to cover the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon in the capital of Kenya. The event is Kenya's biggest Marathon. Anyone who has anything to prove will be there. For many Kenyan athletes it's their opportunity to get noticed and pick up an agent to get a start in a major International race.

@@ChakitoTolu my accountant once told me “starvation” is a great motivator. Many of the best marathoners the world has ever seen come from places where they are literally out running starvation. Their work ethic is unbelievable. They earn and deserve all the success they have. Americans and Europeans in general have no idea what really hard work is - their grandfathers and great grandfathers did however. Heck we wouldn’t have meat in our stores if it weren’t for Somalis and other migrants willing to work in the meat processing plants here. It’s horribly hard work. No American is willing to do jobs. Many years ago when I was young we were extremely poor. We lived in an area with no jobs of any kind. At age 14 and 15 I worked all day in the strawberry fields picking berries in the summer heat along side people from Mexico. I was not only the only white kid the could and would do the work but the only white person period! I came to understand these people were just like me - willing to work hard to give their families better. The US was built by immigrants and we if we are to continue to grow we better fix our messed up immigration system and quit demonizing migrants. End of rant 🤪

@@marlinweekley51 Thanks very much for telling me what's going on there. Me too I grew up in the farm in remote place in Kenya you'll wake up very early to milk cows take milk for selling come back eat very small breakfast and go to the farm the whole day, come back go to the river fetch water and firewood and cook. By the time you are retiring to bed you sleep like a log. The life was programmed like a robot everywhere working Church, home, School and we were disciplined more than the current generation. We were not told what to do, like you we were harvesting maize, beans, sweet potatoes, cabbage. And you have to plant your own crops to sell so that you can buy for yourself books, pens sometimes uniform. Life was hard but we learned perseverance. Punishment was also granted for any mistake during the day for example you are heading cows and goats and they eat someone's else's crops you'll receive a good beating from the owner of the farm and your own parent. Let the Somali's work if the Natives don't want to work, it's like a curse, we have a lazy generation now only playing games on smart phones and competing on fashion.

Crazy. Top three guys just cruising along finishing 2h 11m 09s, 11s, and 14s on sketchy roads with crazy hairpin turns, makeshift plywood bridges so racers can jump ditches, and very little race support. I'm guessing the rest of that pack showed up just seconds later. Putting this in context, the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials marathon standard was 2h 19m! No wonder we aren't competitive on the world stage. Our best showing in Tokyo in 2021 was Galen Rupp running 2h 11m 41 placing 8th... and that's running on a perfect road course without switchbacks & full race support. The Kenyans have SO MUCH DEPTH it's insane.

They should have tables spread out for water as opposed to people holding bottles with their hands. Secondly there should be supervisors on the course with motor bikes clearing the road ahead for these front runners from other runners running casually and obstructing the runners. Thirdly why are bikes on the track in the middle of the runners obstructing the runners. Hopefully these changes are made by the sponsor for the next race.
