    The fact that there's no battey life indicator like the first supaboy is what baffles me. If it's a new version why not add the feature to know when your supaboy is dying. It's one of the most basic features a handheld can have. I have no idea what they were thinking.

    • @jasonmadison1000
      @jasonmadison1000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Shawn Redfield this didn't make any sense to me either. The first time the screen on mine started flickering and getting fuzzy, I thought I had a defective device. Turns out that's how you find out the goddamn battery is dying.

    • @13Gangland
      @13Gangland 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jason Madison me too, when I went to go plug it back to the charger, all was at peace again. Still have mine after two years, works just fine.

    • @theuglykwan
      @theuglykwan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah i can understand that it isn't going to be official quality but these devices not having battery indicator is a killer. Because if you notice it is about to die you don't have much time to locate your power cable and if you are not playing indoors you are SOL, especially if you need to find a save point in your game.

    • @Bruwulf
      @Bruwulf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Using a 16:9 screen makes sense - inexpensive ones of reasonable quality are easier to come by in quantity these days. What's shocking is they didn't force it to display at the right resolution/aspect ratio - that's what most people do when confronted with a widescreen display for retro gaming. Hell, you could hide the excess screen behind a bezel and nobody would be the wiser. That they didn't even try just smacks of laziness and contempt for the user base, at best, and incompetence at worst.

    • @YensR
      @YensR 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Agreed, makes sense to go for a mass-market screen. Additional to your suggestions, you could use the extra screen real estate to display additional information. Like a clock, the framerate or -uh- the battery level!

    • @Trinexx42
      @Trinexx42 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      "Hell, you could hide the excess screen behind a bezel and nobody would be the wiser" a little bit unrelated, but did you know that that's exactly what Nintendo did with the 2DS? It's actually just one giant screen that has a bezel cutting it in two.

    Also happy they improved the SupaBoy. The system was a *great way for us PAL gamers to play NTSC games on a high compatibility rate.* It even works on our TV ports which got some issues with original NTSC SNES systems.

      Kody Karls: Raw & Uncut ok so I don't have experience with portable emulators but I hear you can get a raspberry pi and a shell to put it in that's shaped like a handheld for like 40 bucks or something like that and you can put a ton of Roms and emulators on it just try googling around for it. Also this isn't portable like a handheld but if you have a laptop or even just a regular pc you can run emulators on there and even use like a ps4 or Xbox one controller (I believe you can do the same with ps3 and 360 controllers) through blue tooth. If you have a Mac it's super easy too cause you can use a program called openemu that's super super easy to use. openemu will run pretty much everything from like Atari to ps1,ds, and psp, also there's another emulator that runs on Windows and Mac called dolphin that emulates GameCube and supposedly Wii too ( I say supposedly because i can't figure out how to run Wii on it just gc) the only downside I've had is that the sound quality on most 3d ps1 games and the sound on gc games are crap but other than that it runs fine and in some cases the games look better than an actual console. you can get Roms and emulators from emuparadise.

    If your newer HD televisions have a component input, you can usually use the audio red and white cable in the audio spots and then put the yellow composite cable into the green component slot. This isn't on every TV with component, but it might work on the one you have.

      @@AfterTheFirstNever If it's anything like the subsequent models, the last brightness level for the screen turns it off, so hit the brightness button several times and you should be good to go. I'm fairly certain the only real changes to the subsequent models were cartridge pins, aspect ratio toggle, and the look of the hardware, so this should be the case.

The SupaBoy SFC goes for $81.90 (link: amzn.to/2GYa1rg) and it's also a PRIME shipping Item (free shipping with Prime membership) and both this one (SupaBoy SFC and the SupaBoy S offer Squaretrade warranties... 3-4 YEAR IN LENGTH. THE 4 YEAR WARRANTY IS UNDER $5 AND SO WORTH IT. MY SUPABOY ORIGINAL MODEL BROKE AND I HAD A 3 YEAR SQUARETRADE WARRANTY I BOUGHT FOR LIKE $3 extra AND IT BROKE AFTER LIKE 6 MONTHS AND THEY REPLACED IT IN 7-10 DAYS AND THEY NEVER EVEN ASKED FOR THE BROKEN ONE BACK, LOL!!!!!! Caution, do NOT buy a SupaBoy!!! Most of the units will suffer power issues. The inductor in the power supply will get real hot, causing the unit to shut off. If you plug it in, it could melt the back of the case. You'll have better luck with a RetroDuo. Google it up, this is a real problem with most units out there.

      +utoobninja but the original hardware is more than 20 years old at this point, Japanese electronics manufacturing has always been quite impressive, but it definitely isn't immortal, and some people would rather get brand new hardware then have to replace capacitors and shit on the original when it inevitably dies out. In the long run, it is just simpler (and probably cheaper) to get a brand new SupaBoy.

      datFatSesh if you do a proper recap and or service every few years, you clean your stuff regularly, then you have nothing to worry about. All my 30+ year consoles are working in top shape. As for the future, I would look for open source FPGA systems.

      +iCach0 ya I actually still own an original North American NES which is more than 30 years old at this point, and works, but it was in fact serviced multiple times, and I religiously clean every game the second I pull them out of the slot, but aside from a SupaBoy having brand spanking new hardware, it is also portable, I just don't think it is fair to say NOBODY should get it

    Why bother with this when you can emulate the SNES on PSP and Vita? Sure, neither has perfect emulation for every game, but I have a feeling that the Vita will get perfect SNES and N64 emulation sooner rather than later. Also, smartphones are capable of flawless SNES emulation too.

      g1nobleteam I just don't get it. I'd think nostalgia would come from the actual game, not necessarily how you play it so long as the control scheme isn't too different from the SNES controller.

      Frozen Retro ! Yeah because of the games resolution is not native to its system. The system forcefully stretch the pixel to fit into larger screen.
      Supaboy does this so does emulator. So yeah your right about this feels similar to emulator because as screen perspective they are doing the same thing to fit larger screen.

    Hate this thing. It's pointless. People may as well just emulate the SNES on a psp or something. When you use this you are emulating the SNES hardware, so either way you're emulating.

    • @mortalporcupine2784
      @mortalporcupine2784 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      iVirtualPlays It's hardware yes, but it's not SNES hardware. If they used Nintendo hardware they would be sued for copyright infringement. The hardware is built to emulate what the SNES does. Therefor it's still emulation.
      To your question about the size of this thing: it can be made smaller if they have the technical knowhow and the funds to do it. This isn't a juggernaut company like Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft. They will have to use cheaper components and cut corners to achieve the desired effect.

    • @mortalporcupine2784
      @mortalporcupine2784 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      13Gangland you are obviously not very clever and don't understand emulation. The Supaboy hardware emulates the SNES hardware to be able to play SNES cartridges. Now go take your major fail elsewhere

    • @13Gangland
      @13Gangland 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mortal Porcupine sound more like you're just some ignorant troll. IT PLAYS THE SNES CARTS!!! Not some damn memory card. there is a staggering difference between, so much so, that most real gamers would rather play on the thing that can replicate playing the snes cartridges.

    • @mortalporcupine2784
      @mortalporcupine2784 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      13Gangland I'm not the one who is insulting anyone here. I own a SNES and play real carts on it. This Supaboy is pointless when you can do the exact same thing on a lighter more portable handheld. Grow up kid

    You can definitely plug it into the new tvs. I just purchased a brand new 65" Samsung 4K 6290 and I plug all my old consoles into it. Though my tv came with a splitter cable that splits the component so that it's used like the old AV hook-up.

    I just received this in the mail today. I proceeded to test all my snes games and a few super famicom games. All worked just fine on the first try. Good compatibility so far. The 16:9 format doesn't really bother too much, but the washed out colors do. That was a little disappointing, but so far it seems to be working well. There was an imperfection in the screen on the lower left hand corner. It looks like dust got caught between the screen and the case. I guess time will tell whether the handheld holds up.

    Comparing the original Supaboy and the Retro Duo Portable 2.0, I went with the latter for a smaller form factor, better screen, and great controllers. I like the brightness settings, rechargeable battery setup, and stereo audio of the Supaboy S, though I mostly hook my RDP up to a tv like the Supaboy can do. Wondering how the current units compare. The RDP can also play Genesis and NES titles via docks for the port so I didn't know if the Supaboy had that functionality as well now or not. Famicom compatibility would also be nice.

    Hey, Metal Jesus. Great review! It's nice to see that they fixed the placement of the Select and Start buttons in relation to each other on this model to mirror the Super Nintendo controller. But I'm curious, is there any indication on this that the battery is low or is it like the original model in that your first evidence is that it just can't display the screen properly anymore? (It's very frustrating to not have any indication that you need to save your game before you can't read the menus.)

  • @andyd8977
    @andyd8977 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really hope it is improved. I have the previous version of the supaboy. It was great but a few issues were apparent over time:
    -The Down button on the D pad stopped working. I never dropped it and I store it in the box. I am not a button masher either.
    -If you jiggle the cartridge even slightly the supaboy resets so it interrupts gameplay
    -Some cartridges are hit and miss (I realize that the older version supaboy was rumored to be unable to plays certain games such as the Donkey Kong Series, Starfox and Doom). Some carts that should play would only work occasionally.
    -The sound of the speakers is adequate but sound thin and can have background white noise as volume increases.
    There are a lot of pros though.
    -The 2 ports for controllers work great - great for bringing to a friend house
    -Plugging it in a TV works great
    -The controls feel responsive
    -Battery life is really good
    -And even before the "S" improvements, i had very little concern with the screen.
    -The price is good if they only improved the reliability of the D Pad (for my experience) and the carts were read more consistently
    I rate the previous version of the supaboy an 8 out of 10.

They have every potential to make a great and complete clone but they always fall short. My supaboy erased my game saves and it locks out Super Mario RPG. My retron 5, the genesis slot was busted right out of the gate...and then 1 month later, the system wouldnt dump any games and ceased operation. Ill stick to my originals or for portable, my tablet with emulators and a usb controller.
