Sometimes I sit here and I am like " ah I have heard this a million times already from you guys" but then I catch myself at the store looking at meat and I hear your voices saying 1 gram of protein per lb of body weight, look for grass fed! or I look in the fridge and hear all your voices in my head telling me to eat the protein first. You have all imprinted the knowledge into my head and I so appreciate hearing it constantly because it reminds me to keep it in my routine so I can get the results I want.
I like to take a can or two of tuna and maybe a can of sardines, mix it with plain Greek yogurt and some lemon juice, salt and pepper. It's really filling, high protein and low calorie tuna salad, and you don't have to suffer just eating two cans of dry tuna.
2 servings of plain Greek yogurt mixed with a scoop of strawberry protein powder and 5 grams of creatine is my go to. 60 grams of protein plus creatine and it tastes like strawberry cheesecake lol
I’m down from 40% fat to around 28-30% because I listened to your guys’ advice!! Steak and eggs for breakfast and it’s super easy to get the rest of my protein throughout the day 😊. This show has been a lifesaver for this reformed (fat)cardio bunny.
Age 46 female here working on increasing muscle while decreasing body fat. In Sept. I both increased protein and switched from using the scale to measure progress to using the U.S Navy Bodyfat calculator. I increased protein by about 40 grams a day while staying in a calorie deficit, and it was a real game changer - no weight change but the calculator thinks I gained 5lb lean mass and lost 5lb of fat in 30 days. Noticeable change in way clothes fit. Exercise was weights and walking. Thanks so much Mind Pump! Like you guys mentioned, lowfat cottage cheese really helps keep the protein higher without going overboard on the calories. I rely on the protein shake to get a big breakfast in the morning so I haven't had a perfect day..... yet.
Good job! That's so awesome. I'm 42 and am starting weights again and adjusting my diet... how often do you workout, and what kind of weight routine? I use kettlebells.
@Plantlady82 I'm using dumbells, body weight, and resistance bands to do home workouts right now. I walk 5+ miles a day and strength train 5 or sometimes 6 times a week depending on how I feel (counting "trigger session" days here). I think I'm addicted to the endorphins. I hope you see as many positive changes as I have! Thanks for dropping the note.
Guys, these videos are great. I'm 195lbs. Not very muscelly, would like bigger arms, who doesn't? . I can easily lose 20 pounds and still not be sub 10% body fat probably. Really gives me hope that a high protein diet might eventually get me there. Lost about 5 pounds in the last few months. Just need to step it up now.
I just make salads and add chicken or tuna eggs or beans with it one day avacado I just mix it up I feel so much better eating this way I also have yogurt and little fruit
I am glad to hear you all talk about plant protein. I am on a plant based diet for health. My cholesterol levels on a high protein meat diet are at levels my doc wants to put me on meds. On a plant diet my doc said he has never seen such progress with diet alone. I take creatine and EAA’s. It does help to know how much and what types of plant protein is optimal when meat is off the table. I am not a crazy vegan. I hate when folks talk plant based they roll their eyes and shrug it off. I couldn’t care less how much meat people eat but a plant based high carb diet works well for me. Come with hate if you want I won’t read it or respond anyway. 😂
My friend, your doctor is using outdated information. Having high cholesterol while eating high protein animal foods (meat/eggs/dairy) is normal. Many doctors will recommend that you go on medication for high cholesterol, but cholesterol is an essential nutrient for your mind & body. Please don't take my word for it - your own research is better & finding a doctor who doesn't just preach western medicine can be a great addition to your life. All the best.
Studies show if you are going on a deficit or a cut you should have between 2.4 -3.5 per kilo of bodyweight of protein to help you keep 80 - 90% of your muscle mass

I have been including whole foods in my protien shakes. For example, a heaping tablespoon of peanut butter, about 1/2 cup of Siggi's Icelandic yogurt, a banana, and a handful of spinach, plus a protien shake by Premier Protien. I take this at breakfast and split it with my wife. We are getting over 30g of protien each, plus leafy greens, and other additional nutrients the protien shake may not be giving by itself.
I really needed this episode today. I’ve been really struggling with my protein intake and it’s been leading me to thinking training is pointless if I don’t hit protein. So it’s my sign to lock it in and really start tracking better.
ratio yogurt $2 …170 cals 25 grams protein oatmeal + milk & scoop of whey my breakfast usually comes out to around 600 cals 67 grams of protein. this is a cheap high protein breakfast that i eat to start off ny day bc alot of those calories will be burned off from lifting/walking thruout the day.
Thank you for explaining the high protein diet because in my head it was just 1 pound per body weight but when you said it specific to your target bodyweight that changes everything so thank you for explaining that to us
I totally agree. A 5'6" male should weigh between 130lbs and 160lbs, so that's the range I'll use for my husbands protein intake. I am 5' female, so my range is 100 to 130. Got the ranges from my college nutrition book. Perfect! Thank you Mind Pump!
Please clarify the target protein intake - most people say 1 gram per pound of body weight. But, at about the 12:28 minute mark in this video, a comment was made that said 1 gram of protein per pound of DESIRED body weight. For some, me included, that can be a big difference. I'm 49, 6'-1" and started at 320lbs in March of this year. I'm down to 269 as of this morning. Not really sure what my desired body weight is, but let's say it's 220. I resistance train 3-4 times per week and have seen some muscle growth. Protein hasn't been at the top of my importance list, but I am looking to improve that. How much protein should I be consuming daily.
This may be a little different from people not on trt. 100g of fat and some cholesterol is needed for proper hormones like testosterone. Chicken breast isn’t ideal for nattys, eat the thighs and on red meat go for 85/15 or the ribeye, nystrip, brisket etc not the lean skirt steaks
@@brandonyoung4910 it’s not FOR ME I tried it using my fitness pal, I forgot but it makes a whole lot of food for 100g fat. Personally, I couldn’t stomach it and it wasn’t enjoyable, too dry for me. The easiest time I had was 80/20 Costco grass fed burgers for $5 a pound
This is my problem I can't get into a deficit while trying to get my protein and the fat I need for my brain. The second I go below 100 grams I suffer from depression almost immediately. I also came back low on all fat soluble vitamins.
@@YogawithAliBeale93/7 grass fed ground beef, whole eggs, zero fat greek yogurt and whey protein powder + small amount fruit/honey + no added fats will get you into a calorie deficit while meeting protein and fat needs.
I’m at the beginning of this high protein, heavy lifting journey and boy who knew how difficult it would be to chow down so much protein 😭 My recommended amount is 160g. If I was purely carnivore this would be easy to do but I need to eat vegetables and fruits for the fibre or else I have bad indigestion. Also need enough carbs and fats for a well balanced diet. Right now I need the help of protein shakes to hit the target. Until my body gets used to the satiating feeling of all this protein, I’ll need reinforcements 😂
Not sure why people find eating protein so difficult, I eat 2 tins of tuna, some Greek yogurt and 500g of lean (5%) beef mince daily, maybe add some eggs now and again, and some bone broth, it's not that difficult, i'm getting around 200g per day I reckon - could probably eat more but it gets expensive I suppose.
I drink 8 scoops of whey protein a day which is 900cal and 200 g of protein. It takes care of one of my meals I’ll eat a light lunch and large dinner. The scale remains the same but I’ve dropped a pant size so definitely loosing fat.
Thats not healthy mate, 8 scoop of ultra processed whey protein a day, long term can and will make you sick i am 100% sure, at one point you will experiance the negatives of that
This is even harder if you've had weight loss surgery so have a smaller stomach but managed to put back on the weight lost from that by eating processed sugary foods. I am now down 19.5kg since 1st July and it's all of your tips that's helped me. My SW was 130.7kg so I have a way to go still. Thankfully I am a woman who builds muscle relatively easily because I'm 45 and have been not very kind to myself. Which of your workout programs would be best for me?? I want to do one of your programs but which one?? I've been back in the gym since 1st July and go 3 days a week religiously.
Thanks guys for all of your life health advice. But as a 63 year old, does all if not most of your advice still pertain to me with regards to how to train, nutrition, cardio/weight training? I know the downhill slide for maintaining health starts in your thirties(?). And being in my senior years and wanting to live a long healthy life. Should I be making alterations given my age? With regards to protein, I consume a 1 gram/lb ratio. Is this okay for an old guy like me? Or should I consume more? I'm 5"7" and weigh 150 pounds but my goal is to see my abs in my lifetime. I seem to be on a forever plateau. Thanks for your advice.
In short, I’m 55 and 5’6 or 5’7 about 150-155. And I’ve always worked out since I was very young I kinda have to go against what these guys are saying and I love this channel but seriously if you’re built like a meatball meaning you’re short stocky and gain muscle quickly but don’t get shredded that’s because these guys are all much taller, when they were young, they were very lean kind of like Jeff Cavalier so they had to eat and eat and eat to gain muscle. you and I if we eat like this we just get thicker and thicker and thicker and I’ll go and say of course when I was 20s to 50 no problem if I ate very low calorie and most of the calories were coming from protein and I lifted weights and did very little cardio. I was fine. I would have very visible abs, but I had to very much watch that I didn’t eat too many calories, being protein or other. Now at 55. It is really hard to get back to look the way I did when I was 42 upping protein not gonna work eat healthy, eat mostly protein but you’re gonna have to keep your calories to a low low minimum and you’re gonna have to lift weights 4-5 times a week high intensity interval training 10 seconds on 30 seconds off on a rogue bike or hill sprint at 100% during the work part and you’re gonna have to do 12,000 steps a day just walking and then you will see abs. You will look pretty good but it is much harder than the relaxed statement that these guys are making and again I love this channel.. I’m on nothing no trt etc. so to some this up eat protein but keep it under 2000 calories I would fast 1-2 days a week and do all those exercise protocols I spoke about. It’s sounds hard but how bad do you want it.
Hey guys! Question for ya. Do you think that the current focus on protein is just a wave in the fitness industry? Do you think that, just like the other fads, we will look back and see that protein is just a fad or do you think that this isn’t a fad and is just as important as say drinking water; using water as an example because everyone understands how important that is and it’s not a fad. It’s seems like all marketing is protein protein protein even if you look at the label and see how much sugar is in it they still advertise protein. Protein supplement companies can make a killing right now with the push of protein.
I have a decent job, but I tell you what, protein isn't cheap in some parts of the world. I live in Korea, meat is so expensive. I end up having to get it in powders and whatever is just around (chickpeas and stuff). Americans have way cheaper meat :)
Aiming for 1g/pound may be ok for people who tend to aim poorly, but generally you dont need that much, do you? 0.8g/pound is easier to do and shouldnt be much worse, really. From what I've heard the return on protein is a flattening curve after all.
Cravings- I would crave bananas- even though they made my mouth and throat tingle. I HATE bananas. As soon as I searched ‘what is high in potassium’ (because I’m assuming that I was craving bananas due to potassium deficiency). Once I found better potassium nutrient dense sources- I have never craved bananas ever again. I think our brains are used to searching its own memories and sending out craving to met those needs. Just like pregnant women craving pickles or weird mustard peanut butter sandwiches. The brain needs what it needs. And it will signal to our mind to cravings. Wouldn’t be surprised if those larger folks with cravings are just misfiring their cravings for protein for yummy simple carbs foods.
I am 54, have been doing high protein for months, and still have not lost 1 lb - I train 3 days a week and do HIIT 1x a week, body fat still sits at 22% ( calculated on some online tool) .I have no idea what I am doing wrong
Can you guys please edit out the breathing while someone’s talking? You can probably add a noise gate to the recording so the microphone doesn’t pic it up. Hate to be annoying but it messes up the listening experience. When Sal is talking you can hear lots of breathing throughout the whole podcast. Big fan of the show, I’ve been listening for a few years. I hope this helps others as well👍🏼
Hi, maybe you have these in the USA too, but too any Europeans here what's your thoughts on the high protein yogurts you can get in aldi/lidl or other supermarkets? They're about 1 euro each and have 20 to 25grams of protein. I find them good. Filling obviously. Any negatives on them?
I think it technically can be to an extent. But benefits outweigh it. Combine with veges and fruit and it's a great diet. Even exercise is inflammatory on the body. All about balance and choosing what stresses to put on your body. Ie this kind of lifestyle? Or alcohol, smoking, drugs, mental stress etc
Even on the carnivore diet i have to make sure i get enough protein. It's even hard to hit it when all you eat is meat. If you eat too much fat you're not hungry for the protien.
I am a female in my 50’s and I try to eat 100 grams of protein every day and lifting weights (heavy ) so my question is would this effect my cholesterol levels?
I went carnivore keto and my cholesterol was 50 points lower pushing protein and avocado oil. Get the seed oils out causes inflammation and raises cholesterol.
Eating a carnivore diet is 100 percent ideal smh but u guys would run out of content if u pushed that narrative...super health is simple...but to mk money off of fitness u guys need to mk it complicated
Noob here: how do you get 200g of protein and stay under 2k calories in a day without using multiple shakes and bars? Seriously. Are you guys strict carnivores? I can't fathom eating that much meat
I would disagree, plants give good protein and is way better. Ask God from the Bible. The problem is people don't eat enough with plants. You need to double shoot triple the intake. There are body builders who are on a whole plant base diet
I'm irritated by your non-specific ways of measuring... what is "one protein shake"? Totally depends on how much powder you put in it, doesn't it? I can put 20g into it, 40g, even did 80g once. Also I disagree somewhat about the behavioral stuff... meat does nothing for me. I don't particularly enjoy it, it doesn't really seem to satiate me a lot. But a shake definitely will because it also satiates my cravings for sweetness while meat tastes just bland. So, I'll get my majority of protein through shakes and treat meat and other protein containing foods as the cherry on top. Makes it way easier to be consistent with it, too.

Very educational and relatable
Low fat or high fat? Cottage cheese, yogurt, eggs, egg whites?
Thumbnail is Adam waiting for a warm bottle of milk 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
EAAs. I heard in another podcast that taking a serving of EAAs can count in a daily protein goal as 20g of protein. sound right to you?
Is that high protein makes you lose weight or is it that low carbs as a result of eating high protein is the culprit?
What brand of whey protein do you recommend that tastes great?
Levels
Nice video guys. What about whey protein?
Maybe someone can explain here. When we say 100g of chicken has 31g of protein, do we measure raw or cooked chicken?
Cooked! Whenever you’re cooking meat protein the volume reduces
I am 54, have been doing high protein for months, and still have not lost 1 lb - I train 3 days a week and do HIIT 1x a week, body fat still sits at 22% ( calculated on some online tool) .I have no idea what I am doing wrong
1.5 Grams per pound of body weight
Thanks
1g of protein per lb of body weight. Is that for your goal weight or current weight?
Goal weight 👍
Goal weight
@mindpumpshow what do you recommend to track protein? Manually/log or apps. Would love any recommendations
According to Ben Bikman, plant protein is inferior in every measurable metric.
Hi there! How do I get my questions answered on your channel?
How long does one have to eat a high protein intake until they see results (more lean muscle and loss of body fat)?
I heard too much protein isn’t good for your kidneys. What does that threshold look like?
Can you guys please edit out the breathing while someone’s talking? You can probably add a noise gate to the recording so the microphone doesn’t pic it up. Hate to be annoying but it messes up the listening experience. When Sal is talking you can hear lots of breathing throughout the whole podcast. Big fan of the show, I’ve been listening for a few years. I hope this helps others as well👍🏼
No! Huuuuugggggghhhhh!
Least there's no vocal fry, or smacking and slurping of mouth parts like other podcasters, can't complain 😂
I start my day with kion amino acids (like literally drink it when working out at 4:30 am) does this count as 30 grams of protein?
The expense of eating this much protein a day with current grocery prices is insane. I wish I could be eating steak for breakfast every day lol
Well you found your real issue then my friend.
Ground beef and eggs. Stock up on sales. Use all the money that would go to processed crap, take out and booze towards beef !!!!!
Chuck roast buddy
They recently released a video highlighting affordable protein options.
Steak isn't the only protein option man. I weigh 225 and eat 215 grams a day. My "diet" is way cheaper than everyone else in my household.
Follow the Lee Priest diet.
I work very early is it good to start the day with a shake?
If you do lifting 3 times a week when do you do abs? In those sessions or between?
Abs are done with fat loss
So dumb this down for me. How many grams of protein does it take to melt a gram of fat?
One doubt, High Protein with no calorie def will burn fat?
OMAD helped me shed 39 lbs / 18 kg) of total body weight; not kidding myself it was all fat.
Nonfat Greek yogurt is great.
The 2% one, yes.
A gram per pound is atupid benefits max out for most people at 0.7-0.8 g per pound
Question, is animal protein inflammatory?
I think it technically can be to an extent. But benefits outweigh it. Combine with veges and fruit and it's a great diet. Even exercise is inflammatory on the body. All about balance and choosing what stresses to put on your body. Ie this kind of lifestyle? Or alcohol, smoking, drugs, mental stress etc
Seed oils are 100 times worse, anything processed is going to cause way more damage. Make sure your red meat is grass fed.
So crazy, Nobody can really get 1 gram per pound. 115 grams of protein. THATS WILD for an average person. Being I weigh 230 pounds
Get as much as you can through food, supplement the rest with protein powder, whey isolate is the best
What about Carnivore diet?!! Can you talk about that. 🐃🐅🦍
They don’t recommend it. I heard them say it before
Is it strange that when I start out my day with a protein-packed meal that I get hungry more throughout the day?
Protein does not keep me full unfortunately. I need fibre and starch
Im the same way, but for me its more so eating anything early in the day. Floodgates open
It's not necessary meat... but Organ meat that is highly nutrient.
Be careful not to Overdose in Vitamin A
It’s challenging because it’s expensive to buy good quality organic grass fed meat 😑
If you had to eat one food an not avoid nutrient deficiency I think milk would be more suitable than only eating meat.
eggs
@@jeffilli1663 I feel and function better with some carbs, so eggs as a sole food wouldn't work for me.
Meat contains mostly every nutrient we need
@djromana17 So does milk, and more so. It's literally the sole food for every single mammal for the start of their life.
So hard to eat that much protein 😫
Even on the carnivore diet i have to make sure i get enough protein. It's even hard to hit it when all you eat is meat. If you eat too much fat you're not hungry for the protien.
When im hungery at ten at night i smash a protein shake! 😋
🔥🖤
Giveaway 🎉💪🏼💪🏼
Protein doesn’t signal you’re full ‘because nutrients’
It doesn’t signals fullness at all
Fat does. Which usually comes with protein
I am a female in my 50’s and I try to eat 100 grams of protein every day and lifting weights (heavy ) so my question is would this effect my cholesterol levels?
No, you’ll be fine. Dietary cholesterol from high quality, unprocessed animal foods/meats is perfectly healthy
I went carnivore keto and my cholesterol was 50 points lower pushing protein and avocado oil. Get the seed oils out causes inflammation and raises cholesterol.
🥩🥩🥩
Eating a carnivore diet is 100 percent ideal smh but u guys would run out of content if u pushed that narrative...super health is simple...but to mk money off of fitness u guys need to mk it complicated
Hmm 40 grams for breakfast huh 🎉
Noob here: how do you get 200g of protein and stay under 2k calories in a day without using multiple shakes and bars? Seriously. Are you guys strict carnivores? I can't fathom eating that much meat
There’s high protein versions of almost any food. Bread, yogurt, peanut butter, milk etc ..
Meat before treats.
Fasting melts fat.
It dosent make a difference when you already fat, you need to watch your calories
If you are overweight you want to be in a deficit sure but keep your protein. You’ll lean out better when you are losing fat.
@@AdvocateForFaith hahaha dude i eat whatever i want and watch my calories im 190 17% body fat and happy, calories are more important than
@@UR_AL_SHOOK_UP Hey, whatever works for you!
Protein 'melts' fat.. yh right thumbs down for bullshit title...
I would disagree, plants give good protein and is way better. Ask God from the Bible. The problem is people don't eat enough with plants. You need to double shoot triple the intake. There are body builders who are on a whole plant base diet
No tf it's not stfu😂
Thank you guys!
