Not related to the video, but my country Nepal, will soon allow people to get themselves international visa/mastercards credit or debit cards which will allow all Nepalese people to shop online especially Aliexpress. With the advent of this and free shipping due to nepal being right next to china, we actually have a decent option now. Heck, might even build myself a server soon in the future , if I need to using old xeons ;)

What i found dissapointing in SLI, CrossFire since very beginning (this includes Voodoo2) was that no one designed it to add performance to existing system regardless of what you had before, but rather give an option to purchase more than just one card. But it had to be same card otherwise you could get in trouble. So you had to make a choice before you purchase anything and you had to sell old hardware. In reality if this even allowed to mix different type of cards and different families we would get problems and decrease of performance. So this concept was dead on arrival.

i remember there being an SLI mode option in the nvidia control panel 3d app settings, one was for each graphics card to do one frame each, after the other card has done one, and the other option was for the 2 cards to do half the screen each, one top one bottom, maybe that would work better for the flickering, changing that option?

I have that exact x58 board and I like it, it runs a x5670 really well. What I don't like about it is the color scheme, and the bottom two mounting holes isn't a standard atx fit for my tower. I ended up putting plastic clips in the holes for stand offs designed for this purpose. Huananzhi does have online driver support in case anyone interested in this brand. For the x58, they offer windows 7 and windows 10 drivers... 64 bit only. Be aware, if you download the drivers, extract and rename the folders, for some reason drivers will not install because the folders are named in chinese writing. Took me a few times to figure that one out, as windows doesn't tell you exactly why it won't install the drivers. Once renamed, drivers will install with no issues.

Love these gtx 285 sli videos I would have loved to have owned 1 285 back in the day, let alone 2 of them. I had a lower level 260 back in 2009 and can't find it now, don't know what I did with it. Probably the only thing better then 2 x 285s would be 2x 295s which I think we're a dual gpu in themselves. I remember they disappeared off the market and the 285 was the best you could get after the 295s sold out. I remember thinking why nvidia stopped selling the 295 seemed like a bad idea. Mind you I didn't realize they were a dual gpu card.

What would be the FPS difference between say normal / SLI / and say a GTX1050 ??
Would people achieve similar results or is the SLI more for people who just want a system running SLI because that was the way to go back in the day
Mind you at the time i jumped to Voodoo1 when it came out and then when voodoo 2 came out i changed the entire system to have 2 x voodoo2

Looks like that X79 mboard takes a xeon 2600 cpu (and those cpu support vt-d). Does the motherboard support vt-d in that bios? Just wondering if those Chinese Motherboards would work with xen-project as per its webpage's wiki list. Would also be handy for sr-iov and vmdq for cisco emulation with KVM (as in ACPI tables capable of changing for IOMMU in the uefi). For example, on any such mboards (especially those green and black ones), have you ever tried plugging a nice server NIC in to see if it locks on boot or works? Example NIC would be dell i350t4.

I use X79 as my main desktop, what test do you want me to run?

    • @obsoletepowercorrupts
      @obsoletepowercorrupts 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@philscomputerlab You'd want to test for virtualisation technolgies (VT-d) to see if your domestic motherboard _(as long as it has a supported CPU e.g. some xeons or intels like i5 2600 or fx-series AMD such as fx4300 or 6300 or fx8320/fx8350 or higher)_ has those virtualisation technologues. The reason I ask is because those chinese mboards look like potential "fresh meat" _(because the existing tested mboards are not manufactured anymore, such as the Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5 and gamers and HTPC nerds keeping buying them all first because they have more money than CompSci guys)._ Cue small violin.
You can test for *VT-d* in MSWindows when you check for "SLAT" _(because it is also used by remoteFX as a hypervisor technology)._ HTPC guys who rip MKV files to play over a nice NIC (like a Dell i350t4) sometimes use this test for hypervisor technologies supported by both the CPU and Mboard (just like us guys wwho are into Cisco emulation, and XenProject). Then they can use server NIC cards without their MBoard locking up and crashing. So too do those guys who are into using Microsoft RemoteFX.
*Here is how to test (depending on your OS of choice).*
      1: Either...
So if you use MSServer2012, you can do it this way. This is the easiet (In My Opinion) way to test if you have the desired virtualisation technologies.
      social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/16652.remotefx-vgpu-setup-and-configuration-guide-for-windows-server-2012.aspx#SLAT_CPU_Support
2: Or... The Linux way to check for VT-d is here.
(Quote) _"If VT-d is enabled, Linux will configure DMA Remapping at boot time. The easiest way to find this is to look in dmesg for DMAR entries. If you don't see errors, then VT-d is enabled."_
      stackoverflow.com/questions/51261999/check-if-vt-d-iommu-has-been-enabled-in-the-bios-uefi
3: Or... The MSWindows10 way (or one of the ways) to check (DMAR) is here:
      docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/test/hlk/testref/3b880cc8-516d-4ab4-9d7f-88b558bf4420
As you can see, the xenproject list of supported hardware _(where people have already done those tests on other MBoards)_ is largely made of MBoards that are no longer manufactured, hence my interest in seeing if those Chinese MBoards (which are still made/sold) do the job.
      wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/VTd_HowTo
If you wish to see a youtube video of a rig being built so as to use such technologies, this youtuber has good videos _(but do not feel you have to sit through it all, as it is over an hour long)._ It just might help clarify to you what such a rig looks like. Cheers!

@@philscomputerlab Well, I appreciate you taking to the time to read it. :)
I understand the time constraints. I think, TBH, what will logically happen is that (as with many computer enthusiasts) you'll look into building a Media HTPC and a NAS one day. At that point, you'll notice that the dell i350t4 (or i350t2) is the most famously sought-after ethernet card, and then you'll probably have one of those "Ahh moments" and look back at my comment because, by then on some forums, some media-PC enthusiast would have explained how to install it (better then I have) by then.
Just FYI, your supermicro-Mboards are very likely to support those features. And yes, (in case you are wondering, supermicro also make their own ethernet cards based on that intel i350 chipset). Maybe grab yourself a bargain while you can source them (seeing as you have the Mboard). It is inevitable that one day though, you'll end up with a dell-i350t4 (and you'll love that expansion card). Have fun!

Only asking because idk what to do with it...it’s too old to be useful/relevant in the presence of the rx 580 I’m currently using. I just recently sold my old mobo w/ an i7-2600k which would’ve been perfect, but I’ve got a Lenovo tower laying around with an a10-6700u (2 modules / 4 threads), I wonder what kind of performance it would gain if I were to install the gtx 570. With that combo I can’t expect 1080p / 60 FPS, but it HAS to be better than the integrated Radeon graphics. Would newer NV cards work better on those "X79" chipsets? You could actually look at chipset die directly to learn what model is in that "X79" board (probably C612).
I guess GTX 400/500 series would perform better, but on the other side... both of those GPUs would shine in old DX9/DX10 games, so why botter... if you don't like tinkering around.

It was a cat and mouse game between drivers and patches. I haven't looked at more modern stuff, as here IMO it's better to have a faster single card. SLI for me is more appealing with the old stuff, being retro and experiencing what was out of reach back in the day.

@@philscomputerlab Yeah, since English is my 3rd language I put it in bad words.
      Thinkering? Good.
Actual good value for old games? Better buy $50 GTX 470.
Ablity to say "I had SLI setup in my lifetime". Priceless.
      Hotel? Trivago.

For real. You need an epilepsy warning for your video. I’m not, but I’m sensitive. Causes vertigo and headache for me. Thankfully doesn’t last long. For others though, might cause issue.

Just so you know, and I hope you don't find it weird, but I literally just squeed like a schoolgirl on seeing the title and thumbnail. And I don't even fricking know exactly why...
